OK. It was all my fault. I'm feeling rather stupid right about now.
Auto-fill was entering my email addy instead of my username and I didn't notice it.
Roger, thank you for replying and you can disregard my response to the email you sent me.
Boy that's really tempting.
I'll just have to decide if I want to drive to VA. on Saturday, then turn around and drive to the extreme north of Pa on Sunday. I've already committed to play at our family reunion on Sunday. That's a lot of miles in a 24 hour period.
If you don't want it out in public, send me an email as to where in Virginia you are. I'm 35 miles north of Gettysburg.
While I love Gilmour's guitar work, without Roger Waters, it is not Pink Floyd.
Agreed. Kinda like The Grateful Dead without Jerry Garcia. ![]()
Good job Brian, sounds a little like a Kinks song.
Or Herman's Hermits.
Yep. Sounds real good! I gave you your first "like".
Lovely! Doesn't even look like the same guitar. Enjoy. ![]()
I'll bet that grin on yore face looks like one of the "f" holes on that mando. Good looking instrument.
nela
Yeah, that grin showed up as soon as I saw it on the wall but I believe it resembled the scrolls more than the "f" holes.
Something about the matte, natural wood finish just jumped out at me.
Happy NMD!!!! Crazy shapes on that one.
Sad to hear that the small store is closing down after being around so long.
I hate seeing all the little stores and shops closing. I support the little guy as much as possible. I would rather have my money stay in the local economy than be shipped off to some conglomerate. I know some of it leaves since so many things are made in China now but I do what I can to it local. But that's a whole different subject.
While I was there in the sound room I couldn't stop myself from taking one of the Eastman guitars off the wall and trying it out. Beautiful, rich sound although it seemed to get a little twangy at the high end. The action was a little higher than my Epi's or Alverez 12 but I've play far worse. At $200-$300, overall, a nice guitar for the price. I may have considered it if I was in the market for another guitar.
I always liked that classic shape and sound... slightly different from the A body but perfect for country/bluegrass music.
Yep. I prefer the F style just for the aesthetic value. I would like to delve into the bluegrass genre once I've become a little more proficient. But I foresee at least a years worth of work to be that comfortable.
I was going to do this in the earlier thread I started but it seems to be a tradition around here to start a thread for a new instrument day. So here it is. ![]()
Went to The Guitar Center yesterday to play with as many brands as possible in one stop. Tried the MM, Dean, Epi, Alverez Fender and Washburn. They were all a big step up from the Kay but I walked out empty handed.
This morning I went to a small mom & pop music store. I saw an ad announcing that after 55 years they were closing their store as of July 31. There were a lot of empty spots on the wall but in mandolins they had; 2 Savannah, 1 Johnson, 2 Eastman and 1 Gibson. I never heard of anything but Gibson. By the price I knew the first two were starters. The Gibson was nearly $800 so that was out. That left Eastman. What a sweet piece! The action is nice and low and the intonation is perfect. I can make nice clean chords that I had trouble with on the Kay. They retailed for $599.00 but one of them was "blemished" and marked down to $475.00. Still a bit more than I wanted to spend so I decided to make an offer. Keeping in mind they were closing the store next month, I pulled out 4 $100 dollar bills and asked if he would accept it. He looked at me for a second and said; "Give me a minute." Went into his office, came back in less than a minute and said; "You got a deal."
So I spent $100 more than I planned, plus $15 for the strap and I'm now the proud owner of an Eastman MD315. I couldn't find the blemish until he pointed it out to me. The scroll on the headstock was apparently broke off during shipping. They had glued it back on and once I knew where it was it was easy to see. Doesn't affect the playability or structural soundness but they felt they couldn't sell it for full retail.
So here it is. Nice natural wood finish.
And here you can see the crack where the scroll was glued back on.
OK. I've done this before so I don't know why the pics aren't coming up. I double checked and everything seems to be right. ![]()
Oppps. Copied the wrong code. Now we got it.
Happy Birthday NELA. Hope your head isn't pounding too hard this morning. ![]()
When ordering bridge pins or just purchasing OTC you need to know if your old ones are 3 degree or 5 degree pins. It is very inportant to get the right ones. I just read a good article on the proper way to install new strings and bridge pins (don't remember the site) that also showed how to bevel the ends of the pins so the ball ends of the string don't hang up.
nela
96 to go
If you should happen to come across the article again, could you post a link? I didn't realize there were different ones. I'm not even sure I know what you mean by 3 or 5 degree pins. Thanks.
Joe
Very Nice! I upped your "like" count by 1. ![]()
I guess I never thought of pins actually improving sound.ill probably stick with plastic.
I never gave that a thought either. I would have assumed that since the pins are below the bridge, they wouldn't have any effect on sound transfer. Looking forward to hearing other thoughts on this.
Does the amp go on the other arm? ![]()
What an awesome journey! Think I'll subscribe to make sure I don't miss anything and get a chance to host the PATW package.
whitewater, hope things are progressing well at home.
Sorry. Another question while I'm shopping.
Beside the obvious shape difference, What is the difference between an A and an F? Is it playability, quality or mostly aesthetic?
Thanks for the replies. ![]()
Doug, I have an early 80's Alverez 12 string. It's a beautiful piece and plays well, that's why I inquired about it. Only problem I ever had was the high G string breaks often and I could never figure out why. Still does it to this day.
Grah1, I dug around and read some reviews. They are very mixed. From "Love it" all the way down to "I threw it in the trash and bought a XXX". Not sure what to think.
Tyson, I've heard of Dean but not MM. I'll look into both tonight.
Being a big fan of the brand, I also looked at the Epi MM30. Crazy mixed reviews on that one too. But it appears that if you get an older one, before production moved to Korea and then China, they're mostly favorable.
In the few months I been playing I've decided I'm going to stick it out and the Kay isn't going to work for me much longer. But I'm not ready to sink $500-$1000 into one. I'm hoping to upgrade with $300 or less
Again, thanks for the info. My quest continues. ![]()
I'm new to the mandolin. Bought a Kay last fall at the flea market; cheap. It's definitely a beginners model. I've been playing it for a few months now. I know most of the basic chords (that Em is a tough one) and I'm learning the scales. I'm thinking I'd like to upgrade a step and I'm looking for a bit of advice from some of you veterans here.
Would this one be a step up or is it just another starter model?

Thanks.

Is that a 000 slot head the gent in the middle is playing?
DE
No. It's a 3/4 size Yamaha.
They are making a large circle around the country and expect to be back in Montana in late August. They were pressed for space so they only brought that and the Uke. I have enough instruments to go around. The woman is playing my 12 string Alverez and picked up the mandolin for awhile as well. The one thing I don't have is a banjo which Steve is quite good with. I might have to look into one just to have it around for when someone comes by that can play it.
the kid playing his uke could be a Norman Rockwell print
We thought the same thing! Sue is going to enter it in a photo contest when they get home.
I have friends from Montana that have been traveling across the country for a few weeks; with their grandson in tow. They stopped in here Monday morning. They are both bluegrass people and Sue can play just about any instrument. After a day of catching up, we spent yesterday afternoon and early evening just playing. She showed me some exercises for improving on the Mandolin, which I just started working on. Rain moved in around 7:00 so we moved indoors and went back to catching up but had a great time playing for 5-6 hours. Fingers were a bit tender after all that steady playing. Haven't done that for many years.
Here we are sitting outside their camper in our front yard. I'm on the right.
And here is their 3 year old grandson sitting on the fender of our horse trailer "playing" his uke.
Nice!
I just went to get lumber this morning to replace our deck. I'm thinking a guitar shaped deck is not what DW has in mind although she does have a mold to make a guitar cake. ![]()
When I bought my first guitar 30 years ago, the budget was at the top of my list. I didn't have much in the way of discretionary funds at the time. I went with a $180 acoustic Epi that I was able to make payments on for a few months. A year after I brought it home I had the plastic nut and bridge saddle replaced with bone. The new deep, rich sound just overwhelmed me. A $40 change made it completely different guitar. It's still my go-to acoustic.
There were times when I would be at a party or just an informal gathering of some sort and I was asked what I played. When I said Epiphone, I would almost always get "that look"; and an "Oh, Epiphone", like it didn't deserve to be classified as a guitar. More than once someone would have to eat crow once they heard or played it.
It may not have the same rich ring of a Taylor or Martin but I still can't make myself justify their price tag. I've acquired 5 more Epi's over the years and I'm quite happy with my "cheap" guitars.
JJJ ... way to go on the restraint. Sometimes my empty wallet is the only effective deterrent, so "good on ya" for the willpower.
That empty wallet works quite well. I go to the flea market a couple times a month. Unless I know there is something in particular I want, I tend to not take too much money with me.
Last fall I decided to take the plunge and buy a mandolin. I've wanted one for a long time but never did anything about it. Went to the one music stand and the fellow had 3. A Gibson for $900, a name I didn't recognize for $300 and a Kay for $175. I offered him a nice crisp $100 bill for the Kay. Said he couldn't take less than $150. I said thanks and got about 2 steps away and he gave a little shout to me. He decided that since it needed new strings and he didn't want to be bothered with it, he'd let it go for $100. ![]()
Lovely. The couple times I've tried to write a song, I've been terribly disappointed with the results.
