Thanks Jody and Robert - No frying pan but I do get on her bad side from time to time. I'm pretty lucky and she is a very special lady.

Just a song about how I feel towards my wife. Really enjoyed spending today with her. She's kind of special.

[F]I’ve stopped looking [G]else where

[F]I can’t com[G]pare

Hey Jody - I enjoyed this song. With a daughter and 1 grand I can relate.

I did a little clean up edits as the chords were sitting on the text. Hope you don't mind.

I know Seasick Steve only plays it with 3 strings but the song is basicly TAB'ed from an A7 for the verse and B7 for the chorus...but I can't quite make out the works he's singing in some of the lines. I really like the song ...you can tell he's been down a hard road or two and it is just a great song. I looked for the lyrics and only found dead links...any help?

Thanks Mark and mekidsmom - I guess this could be for a loved one thinking back on it now. Not my intent when I wrote it but I can see how it would fit.

Thanks Lena and serious. I'm kind of glad I'm one of those  out of the spotlight people...not sure I could handle it. Serious, I like the Dm too...last couple of days I've just play the chords by themselves as I like this progression as well.

Thanks Kenny - I have some house guests in my recording studio right now so it might be a while but I will put it on my list. I kind of like the tune and the whole idea of all the what might have beens I never got to see.

This song is about all the talented people who get taken from us just after they finally make it to stardom. It is also about how people wonder what might have been had they stuck around.

Who You Might Have Been By Jeff Gilpin

February 11th, 2010

[A]You left us[F#]

And we wanted [Bm]more[E]

[A]Teased us [F#]

What else was in [Bm]store[E]

[D]Just when we got it

[Dm]Just when we found

Your [A]star [Em11]started to [F#]shine

You went a[Bm]way [E]

And we could only look [D]behind[A] [E]

[A]We look back[F#]

To where you be[Bm]gan[E]

[A]Wondering[F#]

How did you [Bm]land[E]

[D]Right in the spot light

[Dm]Center stage

Where we [A]marveled [Em11]how you got [F#]there

And then you [Bm]left us [E]

Seems so un[D]fair [A] [E]

[A]I wonder[F#]

Why that it [Bm]seems [E]

[A]The brightest [F#]

At the peak of their [Bm]gleam[E]

[D]Get derailed

[Dm]Taken away

We [A]gaze on [Em11]wondering what might have [F#]been

But can only [Bm]imagine[E]

Who you might have [D]been[A]

updated - I thought Dm sounded better in line 6 of the verses than D7...a little tinkering is all

Allman Brothers - Melissa - it's a bit of a variation of that pattern but still sounds good. One of my favorite songs. It's on chordie if you want to look it up.

Thanks Lena and Phil - Yep, trying to stay with the writing and was in a funk so let it help me write. I wish it was the grandbaby but it is work. It has been particularly busy lately and my musical look away has been my open mike night. I've been doing some of my stuff but mostly covers a lot lately and some of the covers are just so darn good. By the way a grandson on the way now! I need to record some and I will but again  a time thing... Thanks for the support.

Thanks Jody - I've had pleanty of "chordie dreams" inspired by all my visits hear and all my chordie friends. My recording is far behind but I will add it to the list. I've been stuck in "cover" mode for a while now but I hope "drifting away" kicks me back to writing my own again.

Thanks for the comments Jody and Stran. This song is about a feeling if you know what I mean. Converting the feeling into real things is always tough. Boats I like because I think of boats floating on a river, moving slow propelled by a lazy current and really it put the thought of drifting away into a picture I can see and understand. At least that is how I saw it when I wrote it. I'm sure there are more clever ways to bring that imagery home but I didn't want to impead the writing because sometimes if I over analyze the song I'm writing I'll stop, pick it apart and usually delete it in the end. I've got tons of songs ended up like that. Anyway thats it for boats. I'm keeping it in for now. And again thanks for the comments...they made me think about what I wrote and understand my song better.  smile

Drifting Away By Jeff Gilpin

January 28th, 2010

[G]I call you up you don’t [Em]answer

[G]Leave no message you’re too [Em]clear

[F]Must have something more im[C]portant going on

[F]I’m no [C]one you want to [G]hear

[G]I talk to you but you don’t [Em]hear me

[G]Seems you don’t hear the words I [Em]say

[F]Not sure why you seem so [C]distant

[F]Feels like I’m [C]drifting a[G]way

[C]I remember you used to [G]look at me

[F]Had a special twinkle in your eye

[C]I could tell just [G]what you were thinking

[F]Now a days I don’t even [D]try

[G]I think about maybe [Em]asking

[G]Maybe we could go out just you and [Em]me

[F]Before I even [C]mention

[F]You have plans for [C]something else to [G]see

[G]Do you feel the [Em]same things

[G]Maybe I’m just having a bad [Em]day

[F]I’m with you but not [C]with you

[F]Feels like you’re [C]drifting a[G]way

[C]Wonder why you don’t [G]hear me

[F]Like my battery’s running low

[C]Can’t seem to get our [G]conversation started

[F]Maybe I should just [D]go

[G]I know that you got [Em]your things

[G]My things take a lot of [Em]time

[F]I still think of you [C]when I’m away

[F]Wondering if I [C]ever cross your [G]mind

[G]I’m with you and you don’t [Em]notice

[G]Happens far too much these [Em]days

[F]Two boats heading different [C]directions

[F]I’m afraid that we’re [C]drifting a[G]way [F] [C] [G]

A former teacher/instructor of mine told me the best way to learn faster is to write some songs and write in a way that will challenge you to improve...hope that helps.

Okay, I was doing my Wednesday open mike thing this past week and I did pretty good so I was feeling good about myself. I stayed around and listened to a few more offerings and the last of the acoustic performers was a guy in a everlast sweatshirt. I was not expecting much but he really did a great job and I felt I had to share. His name was Angel Perez (http://www.myspace.com/angelpereznoregrets2) and he is out of Tuson, AZ up here in the DC area. He is the real deal and if you got to listen to him live like I did you would be an instant fan. I am not in his league but I sure am glad I got the chance to hear him at an open mike.

Hey Lena - Thanks - I'm over in Germany on vacation now but checking in to see what's going on in Chordie land. I agree that a good relationship with your father is wonderful. It helps make you who you are I think. I will try and record this too once I get back...maybe do another video...who knows.

Just wanted to share this great song. I figured it out but I would recommend you all do the same if you like it...just a CGF song but you'll have to figure out the lyrics on your own like me since I could not find them anywhere...worth the effort though. From the Album - Peter Case with David Perales and called Thank You St. Jude

Thanks Russ and Ken. I would not be the person I am today without his influence. - I played this at my last open mike and it went over well. I'll try and get it recorded soon. Maybe video as well.

Thanks very much you all. I hear you on that work family balance, Robert. I know it was why my parents split up back in the day. I did sleep well after I wrote it but didn't get enough, worth a little lost sleep though.

I couldn't fall asleep last night and got to thinking about my father. One thing led to another and I ended up writing this.

[D]I first [A]knew you as my [D]father [A]

[D]I never [A]heard an angry [G]word

Always [A]seemed so under[D]standing[G]

[D]Never [A]seemed to get [D]disturbed [A]

[D]Hard to re[A]member way back [D]then [A]

[D]We moved to this [A]little country [G]town

On the top of this [A]hill off a [D]dirt road [G]

[D]Didn’t [A]see you much a[D]round [A]

[G]I still [A]talk with you to[D]day

[G]Your answers [A]come into my [D]mind

[G]I go over [A]all of what I’m [D]feeling [G]

And [D]hear you say [A]it’ll all be [D]fine [A]

[D]On that land [A]we grew to[D]bacco [A]

[D]But other farmers [A]came and did the [G]chore

You were off [A]writing for the [D]paper [G]

[D]Wish I’d [A]got to see you [D]more [A]

[D]At Christmas [A]time we sold [D]trees [A]

[D]I remember you [A]singing O Tannen[G]baum

People came from [A]all around to [D]buy them [G]

[D]We’d dig it up and [A]let them take it [D]home [A]

[G]I still [A]talk with you to[D]day

[G]Your answers [A]come into my [D]mind

[G]I go over [A]all of what I’m [D]feeling [G]

And [D]hear you say [A]it’ll all be [D]fine [A]

[D]When I was still [A]young when we moved to the [D]city [A]

[D]You got a [A]job at the universi[G]ty

A bigger [A]house and not as [D]far to drive [G]

[D]But less time [A]with your fami[D]ly [A]

[D]That was when it [A]seemed my life [D]sped up [A]

[D]Quickly grew from a [A]child to a [G]teen

I remember some[A]times we’d go play [D]tennis [G]

[D]On occasions [A]that you could break [D]free [A]

[G]I still [A]talk with you to[D]day

[G]Your answers [A]come into my [D]mind

[G]I go over [A]all of what I’m [D]feeling [G]

And [D]hear you say [A]it’ll all be [D]fine [A]

[D]Never were [A]handy with the [D]tool box [A]

[D]Never saw you [A]working on the [G]car

But oh [A]how you could turn a [D]phrase [G]

[D]I always [A]thought it’d take you [D]far [A]

[D]Around the [A]time I was to [D]leave home [A]

[D]Home sudden[A]ly was not a[G]round

You got a [A]job up in [D]DC [G]

[D]Mom went [A]back to Houston [D]town [A]

[G]I still [A]talk with you to[D]day

[G]Your answers [A]come into my [D]mind

[G]I go over [A]all of what I’m [D]feeling [G]

And [D]hear you say [A]it’ll all be [D]fine [A]

[D] [A]The last time I [D]saw you [A]

[D]You were sick [A]half out of your [G]brain

Looked into my [A]eyes called me [D]David [G]

[D]I smiled said [A]David’s not my [D]name [A]

[D]You said I [A]looked kind of fa[D]miliar [A]

[D]I asked a [A]little like your [G]son

You said [A]kind of but not e[D]xactly[G]

[D]Was it the drugs or [A]were you having [D]fun [A]

[G]I still [A]talk with you to[D]day

[G]Your answers [A]come into my [D]mind

[G]I go over [A]all of what I’m [D]feeling [G]

And [D]hear you say [A]it’ll all be [D]fine [A]

[D]You passed a[A]way not long [D]after [A]

[D]You went while [A]you were in your[G]sleep

I’d just [A]left [D]a week or so [G]before

The [D]man every[A]body knew as [D]Pete [A]

[D]Every now and [A]then I [D]catch myself [A]

[D]I want to [A]call you or just to say [G]hello

Then I re[A]member with a [D]tired smile[G]

[D]You’re with me [A]wherever I [D]go [A]

[G]I still [A]talk with you to[D]day

[G]Your answers [A]come into my [D]mind

[G]I go over [A]all of what I’m [D]feeling [G]

And [D]hear you say [A]it’ll all be [G]fine [D]
