This is just a song that I wrote to try and explain to myself why I constantly think about the mountains of western North Carolina, and also why I want to one day move back there.

Wildwood Memories By Jeff Gilpin

May 20th 2008

Intro

[G] [D] [G] [Em]

Verse 1

[C]Sometimes when I get a little [G]homesick

[C]Sometimes when I miss my mountain [D]home

I [C]break out my six string and start [G]playing

That song that [C]helps my mind meander as I play [Em]on [D]

Verse 2

[C]I heard Wildwood Flower as a [G]young ‘un

It wasn’t ‘til [C]later I heard words sung a[D]long

[C]Now I hear that music and sur[G]render

But [C]in my mind words of a different [Em]song [D]

Chorus

[G]Don’t forget when you leave the [D]mountains [G]

[G]Though your journeys take you wide and [D]far [G]

[G]You were born in the middle of these [C]mountains [G]

[G]And you’ll always have them wherever you [D]are [G] [Em]

Verse 3

There [C]was a day I thought I’d [G]forgotten

I [C]seemed to have let the mountains slip my [D]mind

Then a [C]trip took me up the grade near [G]Old Fort

And I [C]started humming that old tune as I [Em]climbed[D]

Verse 4

[C]Starting down I could see Black [G]Mountain

[C]Further on Swannanoa [D]too

[C]Past Oteen and then on in to [G]Asheville

[C]All those mountain memories staying [Em]true [D]

Chorus

[G]Don’t forget when you leave the [D]mountains [G]

[G]Though your journeys take you wide and [D]far [G]

[G]You were born in the middle of these [C]mountains [G]

[G]And you’ll always have them wherever you [D]are [G] [Em]

Verse 5

I [C]guess that’s why it always seems I’m [G]seeking

A [C]way to settle roots in textured [D]land

A [C]land with deep valleys and steep [G]rises

Some [C]place to help me feel at home a[Em]gain [D]

Verse 6

[C]Home to me is looking out my [G]window

And [C]seeing ridges blue that fill the [D]sky

And [C]carried on the wind that distant [G]melody

The [C]one that takes me back to days gone [Em]by [D]

Chorus

[G]Don’t forget when you leave the [D]mountains [G]

[G]Though your journeys take you wide and [D]far [G]

[G]You were born in the middle of these [C]mountains [G]

[G]And you’ll always have them wherever you [Em]are [C]

Wherever you are[G]

I understand not everyone likes this kind of music but if you do happen to like bluegrass, americana, or folk with a lot of really great harmony then you need to give these ladies a listen. They pretty much knocked my socks off. Have a listen to their song Sleep Missing Waking and see what you think.

Thanks you two - I kind of like this one too. My recording however has taken a little delay as my friend and mentor who's been helping me to make better quality recordings has just moved and hasn't set his studio back up quite yet. I can still do my recording but it it not near as good as what I have on my web site right now and I do not want put out less than my best so stand by and as soon as I am able I will get some more recordings up.

Chilling By Jeff Gilpin

May 15th 2008

Verse 1

[E]Chilling in the [Am7]evening

[D]Letting all my worries float a[E]way

[E]Chilling in the [Am7]fragrant springtime air

Re[D]laxing at the end of my [E]day

Yeah I [D]think that I will [Am7]have a day to[E]morrow

[D]I’ll put yester[Am7]day far be[E]hind

[D]Nothing to re[Am7]gret no pain or [E]sorrow

Just [D]close my eyes smile and take my [B7]time… while I’m

Verse 2

[E]Chilling at the [Am7]end of the day

[D]Counting all I did and need to [E]do

[E]Chilling as I [Am7]let myself unwind

[D]Not too long to go until I’m [E]through

[D]I let go of [Am7]my peaks and my [E]valleys

I [D]put away the [Am7]baggage I bring [E]home

[D]Softly strumming [Am7]music helps my [E]mind ease

At the [D]end of my day finally a[B7]lone…alone and

Verse 3

[E]Chilling before [Am7]bedtime

[D]Getting my brain ready for what’s a[E]head

[E]Chilling somewhere [Am7]round that midnight hour

[D]Just before I tuck myself in [E]bed

[D]Turning off the [Am7]day I’m almost [E]ready

[D]Shutting down [Am7]promises I still plan to [E]keep

I [D]let the fatigue [Am7]seep into me [E]steady

[D]Off to bed I’m ready now for [B7]sleep [D]sleep [E7]sleep...

My son is coming home on his mid-tour from the desert and my daughter is coming back home as well so we will have the whole family together again for the first time in a while. It got me to thinking about when I went back home after being away for a while and how that visit is from both sides of the coin so to speak.

Family Reunion By Jeff Gilpin

May 12th 2008

Verse 1

[E]Blown on the winds to the [A]ends of the [E]earth

I’ve [E]travelled since [B7]I can re[E]call

[E]People and places I’ve [A]met and I’ve [E]seen

I [E]think back re[B7]membering them [E]all

[A]My children seem to have [D]followed my [A]lead

They’ve [A]left home to see the world [B]too [B7]

I [E]guess I can’t fault them I’ve [A]been where they [E]are

Just [E]doing the [B7]same thing I’d [E]do [B7]

Verse 2

Now [E]they’re coming home a re[A]union of [E]sorts

[E]Giving their [B7]travels a [E]pause

A [E]taste of home cooking a [A]look back at [E]life

Be[E]fore their [B7]feet took the [E]call

I [A]wonder what they’ll see when [D]they come back [A]home

What [A]memories will come back to [B]them [B7]

Both [E]happy and sad times from the [A]days not long [E]gone

Of their [E]life with their [B7]family and [E]friends [B7]

Verse 3

So [E]we set the stage and pre[A]pare for the [E]day

That [E]seems to ap[B7]proach at a [E]crawl

[E]First one will get here and [A]closely be[E]hind

The [E]second is [B7]likely to [E]follow

[A]Catching up slowly [D]stories to [A]tell

[A]Seeing how kind time has [B]been [B7]

[E]Parents and children have [A]somehow be[E]come

[E]A grown up [B7]family of [E]friends [B7]

Verse 4

[E]Days slow to get here but they [A]surely go [E]fast

[E]Before you [B7]know it they’re [E]packed

[E]Saying the goodbyes and [A]then out the [E]door

It’s [E]off to the [B7]plane to head [E]back

[A]Seeing each other in [D]each other’s [A]eyes

[A]Memories rush back to us [B]all [B7]

And [E]gets our eyes misty as we [A]hug and we [E]smile

When you [E]get back please [B7]give us a [A]call [E]

Hanging on to the Memories By Jeff Gilpin

May 7th, 2008

Intro

[D7]

Chorus

Hanging on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[D]bide

Verse 1

I remember the [G]mountains I’d play out all [D]day

From sunrise to [A]sunset outside I did [D]stay [D7]

My steep sloping [G]mountains nary a [D]car

Would disturb my [A]mountain that ranged wide and [D]far [D7]

Chorus

Hanging on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[D]bide

Verse 1

Then off to the [G]city but not far a[D]way

I still could see [A]them on off in the [D]grey[D7]

Made me some [G]friends there all of them [D]true

Still growing up [A]country in those ridges so [D]blue [D7]

Chorus

Hanging on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[D]bide

Verse 1

Eventually I left [G]them and in the world I did [D]find

My life in the [A]mountains would be left far be[D]hind [D7]

But the world’s full of [G]people a wide varie[D]ty

And I hoped that they all [A]would be friend with [D]me [D7]

Chorus

Hanging on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[D]bide

Verse 1

Friends I did make [G]there as I lived far and [D]wide

Though not from my [A]mountains they were still good in[D]side [D7]

Met one friend so [G]special from a land far a[D]way

So much like my [A]mountains she’s still with me to[D]day [D7]

Chorus

Hanging on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[D]bide

Verse 1

Now I’ll not for[G]get the roads I’ve been [D]down

All over this [A]wide world now I’ve come back a[D]round [D7]

To the land in the [G]foothills though not mountains it’s [D]true

One day I’ll get [A]back there until then what I’ll [D]do …[D7]is

Chorus

Hang on to the [G]memories until my dying [D]day

I'll try and re[A]member so they don’t fade a[D]way [D7]

Memories so [G]special they fill me in[D]side

So time's not for[A]gotten and helps me a[G]bide [D]

My Mom is celebrating her 71st birthday tomorrow. She is a big reason why I love all types of music so this one is for her.

Lordy Mama By Jeff Gilpin

May 7th, 2008

Dedicated to my Mother,  Mary Gilpin, for her 71st birthday

Verse 1

[E]Mama,[A] [E] how’d you [A]ever put up with [E]me [A]

[E]Lordy,[A] [E] I must have been a [B7]chore [E] [B7]

Yet you [A]helped me make it through

Had some [E]scraps but only one or [A]two

Lordy [E]Mama, How’d you [B7]ever put up with [E]me [A] [E] [B7]

Verse 2

[E]Headstrong, [A] [E] I [A]guess that’s putting it [E]mild [A]

[E]If I [A]wanted [E]to, I’d try hard to get my [B7]way [E] [B7]

But you [A]showed me right from wrong

And [E]somehow I still got a[A]long

Lordy [E]Mama, I surely [B7]was a devil [E]child [A] [E] [B7]

Verse 3

[E]Mama, [A] [E] you sure [A]had a winding [E]road [A]

[E]And you [A] [E] thought raising me was [B7]tough [E] [B7]

When your [A]life should have slowed down

You [E]start on another [A]round

Lordy [E]Mama you sure [B7]had a winding [E]road [A] [E] [B7]

Verse 4

[E]Mama,[A] [E] [A]I will never ever for[E]get [A]

How [E]you’ve[A] [E] always been there for [B7]me [E] [B7]

Through the [A]ups and the downs

Making me [E]smile when I come to [A]town

I love you [E]Mama and I will [B7]never ever for[A]get [B7] [E]

Hey Chuck - Plays pretty good. I had a little trouble with the chorus but I bet I would understand if I heard you play it. Thanks for the comments on Grey Skies. Those recordings just use my vocals only and a gentleman named Mike Trella playing the guitar. He is an outstanding guitar player and for the recordings I only had to focus on the vocals.

This song is about how I met and fell in love with my wife. I, at first, didn’t realize I met the woman I’d always wished for, the woman of my dreams. I also realized that I would not have changed the circumstances that led me to the life I now have although some of my experiences were painful to take at the time.
