Another sad post from me. Rick was guitarist and vocalist in Status Quo, one of my favourite bands. He will be sadly missed as I missed one of their concerts last summer. He had been taken ill before so I believe his son took his place. I had been at one of their concerts back in 1972 and what an impression it made on me, probably the main reason I love rock music.

In addition to what Roger said above, none of us pay to be a member here so none of us has the right to demand anything. We can make suggestions, try that in future.

Thanks all and merry Christmas. Jerome, both my new pedals are battery or power supply, it's great though not to have to worry about the battery running out half way through a gig or recording. WARNING! Don't leave your jacks plugged in when not in use.....they run out.

new pedal day.

i have a Wilson bass guitar which i enjoy playing but there are no tones it's either full on or full off. so after 40 years of dank or dummm, i've splashed out on a new stomp pedal; a Beringer BD121 V-TONEDRIVER DI, the reviews were good and so was the price and the range of tones is just what i was looking for. i sold my bass amp around the time Elvis died which was when i went solo so i just play it through my Alessis mixer into my Tascam. big smile....

so that's me done for another year.

My God that is so touching. The video complements your words which are written so well to a tee! I'd forgotten about that song so it didn't feel like me performing it then I could listen to it as a third party I think all the errors were on the vocals. Well done Jim, a true talent.

hi EB, you should have posted this in Poems until you or one of our trusted musicians might put some chords to it. i guess a mod from this forum will come along and move it for you, so you'll know where to find it. never the less it is what it says on the tin....melancholy and quite sad, you've written it in the style of a letter, maybe something there to work on? i have a son out in Oz working "up north" as he says in the mines, sadly he's working over Christmas as he has done for the last few years as he has no wife in Oz (long story) but just recently he met a young lady from Bali which he seems taken with, so you never know? the point is; they're both alone for Christmas, so maybe next year? just like your song talks about.

so well done.

Hi there Butch, when I saw your tag I took a second look at the date and saw today's, so welcome back. Some other names you may remember but have got lost somewhere are Daddy Cool,  Old Doll and Southpaw which I haven't seen for a while and a few others. Sorry for your family and hand problems, hope 2017 is a good one for you.

I like it a lot Jim Bob. Giving me the feel of Elvis's Guitar Man. I keep saying it and I'm gonna say it again...you have a way with words.

I would add upon your face in the second verse to keep the rhythm of the song going. Just a thought.

Hi Jim

I love playing bass but my playing is very basic mainly chord root, you know if you're playing a G chord you play G note etc. Bassists like McCartney make a kind of melody around the chord while greats like the late Chris Squire play the whole arm and still be in tune.
Now then....is it easier than six string? You still have to concentrate especially when you're new to a piece, playing intricate riffs and singing takes a lot of practice and doesn't always come off right  you also need to know when it's best to play deep notes or higher more mellow notes. It comes with experience.
I once tried to teach a guy to play 6 string, in the end I suggested bass. He ended up playing bass, 12 string and piano!
With bass rhythm is more important than 6 string  I always equate bass with drums. Once those two are in the groove you're nearly there.

Hi Bill, I hate to disappoint my friends, so I knocked this one up in a hurry cos I wont have time tomorrow (Wednesday)  hope you've taken that Luger from your temple and your rocking around the Christmas tree to this one...

Knockers? AKA boobies, Bristol's my favourite; mummy pillows. We also recognise knockers as people that habitually run others efforts down, I sometimes get put in this category.

Knocked up? Got or getting pregnant alt jerry building a structure.

Bill you've got to be one of the funniest guys I know and Russ's reply also made me giggle.

Just a suggestion what about a thumb drive? It must be cheaper to post and you can get more songs on there???

Bill, your original post made me laugh...in a good way honest. You couldn't offend me if you tried and I don't believe you would? Keep on being the Opie, Will, Bill that we all know and love.

Your pal Phill.

But I have to tell you: This one makes me wanna shoot myself.

I'm sorry if I'm being too blunt, but it's also the reason I hate "Blue Christmas".

I mean you even have a place in there where the singer's supposed to sob???

I hope you're not upset with me.

Bill

my dear Opie, songs are put up here so that they can be commented upon, so please don't be thinking you're a party pooper, your not. the theme of the song as Peatle says is a chappie whose wife has taken the high road and so he faces another Christmas alone when he can see others around him looking forward and enjoying the festive season as i intend to do and i hope that you and the lovely Dondra will too.

thanks Peatle, you cant have every song rockin around the Christmas tree and listening to sleigh bells can you? even though, if you listen closely there are sleigh bells on the track.

merry Christmas to all

Wow Bill, when you ask a question you don't pull any punches.

1. I know there are 5, 6 and 8 stringed basses but I'm a simple kinda guy and four are enough for me.

2. I began with 6 strings and graduated to bass to join a band.

3. Never gave this much thought. Simple C/W songs and lot of rock tunes are quite easy. More riff orientated songs are more difficult so require a lot of practice.

4. Get a cheap one to start the harder it is to play the more pleasure you'll get when you get a good one.

5. I don't have the patience to teach but drum and bass playing together is a beautiful thing.

6. I'm in the UK and you know me William (Opie) and you know what I do.

The rhythm section of a band or recording are the basis of the sound and the tighter they are the better the sound and feel. Lead guitar and vocals and keyboards, horn section? etc add to the colour. So why is it the axeman and the singer that get all the glory, and the girls?

This is so true. I've always found that songs I force out are awful and never see the light of day. But everything you say is true. When I'm waking up. In the shower. When I'm driving and by the time I get to a piece of paper and pencil.... they're gone.

Are you going to put this one to music?

i bought my Stratacaster in '72 i ordered it in white as i liked the guitar George Harrison played at the Bangla Desh concerts. i was doing a once a month spot at a pub when i bought a Cort in black it caused a little uproar as i'd been advertised as having a "white" guitar.

my Telecaster is in a kinda maroon colour and quite shiny.

Bill, you don't have to look at the guitar while you're playing lol

i have a CD by Knopfler called "kill for crimson" worth checking out

yes, believe it or not; HONEY by bobby goldsboro i think? i tried recording it for a friend and got wrapped up in the words...failed!
