I can live with that, but James you are right, guys like the Stones, Clapton played brilliant songs without knowing how to read music.
You can see that a lot of other musicians can read music.
It should be teached at school, starting at 7 years.
Another important fact, that has nothing to do with music is: is it true that when you are a real good quarterback, you are allowed to an university like law, anthropology, and you can have your degree?

Don' tell me. I had, thanks to my profession to get "samples" of drugs even worse than cocaine and heroin together and for free.
I remember me reading in some magazines, that KEITH RICHARDS is still living, because he could afford the GOOD, 100% pure stuff.
Unfortunately, if you see the guy, I admire him, but a lot of people at his age are in a service flat
What I wanted to ask with this topic was in fact: the most important bands in the sixties, seventies, and their impact on the music until today.

jerome, you are telling the truth. I have a daughter, and once they go on 13, you loose control, not about the education she got, but they start (13-17 years) to search their path in their lifes.
Sometimes, better most of them are adults in a kid body, but a lot more are kids in an adult body.
But 30 = horrible, bye bye the fabulous 20-30 years.

Well Bobby6string, you are right. I wrote a topic about a guitar top. Rain, humidity, heat; cold can ruin your expensive guitar, especially the top.
See my topic about what to do if your guitar top is not longer flat.
About acoustic sounds: I have a Martin HD-28, so a dreadnought, and playing on that guitar, you can make a lot of noise, even today I ask myself (compared with a Gibson Humminbird, also a dreadnought, why if we play with 2, one uses the HD-28, the other the Gibson, you have difficulties to hear the Gibson, because the HD-28 blows you away.

I agree with upyerkilt and southpaw (where did you get your nickname?) .
The best dvd I saw was the overwhelming song: I'm going home by Ten Years After. But what happened later with Alvin Lee, who was indeed one of the best guitar players I ever saw.
About the who and the kinks I was maybe wrong. Upyer do you know the song DAVE BERRY singing: you got this strange effect on me (written by Ray Davies) and was a huge hit in the UK, Belgium, and maybe a few more countries? Have you heard something about Scott Mckenzie after his (Mama & Papas) song: SAN FRANCISCO. You are 100% correct about the JAM, followed by other WELLER projects. WORLD FAMOUS in the UK, and a lot less in the rest of Europe.
By the way: why are bands so unhappy when they don't have success in the USA. If you focus your music more in Europe, you will have a gigantic market: just count the numer of people in other European countries?

Re: CURIOSITY KILLS THE GUITAR (22 replies, posted in Acoustic)
If someone asked me what I like to play: electric or acoustic, my answer would be very similar with DON CORLEONE. As I told already I am blessed to have a nice collection, but you can't play them all.
I play 80% acoustic, and 20% electric.
WHAT is the easiest way to start playing: for me definitely ELECTRIC. The neck is long and thin, and it is a lot easier to play, but then I changed my mind, if you start playing acoustic, you will play easier the electric. Plug it in, add some distortion, some delay and a few other effects, you will play so loud and mistakes while playing are a lot more difficult to spot, using electric. Skip all effects, take a crystal clear sound OR take an acoustic, and you will hear every little mistake.
A strange fact: because I play and acoustic and electric, I am really surprised that I was able to play typical electric songs acoustic, using the same riffs and licks as on an electric.
Who else has a similar experience?

We are so familiar with these letter matching a chord, but I wanted to know more about these "chordletters".
Why are chords have a letter?
Does anybody know where it started?
My best friend, my guitar buddy, is always telling me: you have to start in DO, or in MI. He does this all the time, for him it is do re mi fa sol la si do. At first I didn't have a clue what he wanted, because I speak about a chord in letters, and he don't know what a D7 is, or C (= DO).
So when and why are we playing chords who don't have a name, but a letter.
What is the origin of the "chord/letter." I never went to music lessons, I developed my own style, like a lot of us do, but I CAN'T READ MUSIC.

Upyerkilt, thanks for the info. I was sure, and it is a common problem, that NIRVANA, was just lucky, compared to groups playing the same style.
BUT WHAT I WANTED TO KNOW WHAT KIND OF MUSIC FOLLOWED AFTER THE BIG BOOM IN THE SIXTIES, in what style did this music "continue"
FOR ME: there are NO ORIGINAL groups, because every artist pick up music or steal music from others. INDEED who can tell what is ORIGINAL??

Topic: UNDERESTIMATED FAMOUS GROUPS (15 replies, posted in Bands and artists)
This topic is more focused on the fifties, sixties and seventies.
Maybe it is not fair for our younger chordians, they can probably make a similar topic about underestimated groups starting from the eighties.
I admit that a better title would have been the same but about pop groups, who sold millions of records by us, being shy mentioning the name of such groups. IT WAS "NOT DONE" to be a fan of certain groups. (Examples: Mud, The Sweet, Slade, in fact more the "glitter" style, see PAUL GADD
better known as Gary Glitter, T-Rex = Mark Bolan can be added too) Like I told they sold millions, and now you will find them back, touring under the name "the Golden Time)
Underestimated for me:
- Bee Gees
- Kinks
- The Who
- The Tremeloes
- The Hollies
Please add your opinion concerning these groups. Maybe it is not correct to mention Zager & Evans or Norman Greenbaum. I am convinced that they sold probably better in the US

I had a topic about this, but I deleted that topic.
I have an acoustic and the top was not longer flat but higher on some places and deeper on others
I went to see 2 luthiers and they send me to a luthier specialised in acoustic guitars.
Waiting tile 2 years. A friend took my guitar a few months ago to give it to someone who's passion is how a guitar is made. He can really do a lot, he takes every piece of guitar to see how she is made.
He repaired my guitar using an ingenious wooden system to put in my guitar and to lift the top.
Probably it will affect the sound, not much, but IS THERE A CHORDIAN FAMILIAR WITH SUCH A "TREATMENT"?
What happens when you sit by accident on your expensive guitar, or a ruined top caused by heat+cold dry+wet.
I am talking about an expensive guitar, a cheap guitar easier to buy another.

ABOUT WOOD: ROSEWOOD especially, is used a lot but is it possible to hear the DIFFERENCE?
Honduras mahogany versus other mahagony
COCOBOLO - Rosewood from Central America and Mexico.
Different kinds of rosewood are used to build a guitar.
WHAT ABOUT ROSEWOOD : THERE ARE A FEW COUNTRIES PRODUCING ROSEWOOD.
But is Brazilian Rosewood so good, compared to Indian Rosewood or Rosewood from Mexico and Central America?
SPRUCE: you have "German" spruce, but it is more European spruce and SPRUCE from the US which is usually used on more expensive models.
WHAT IS THE "REAL" DIFFERENCE, and are you able to hear a different sound between European spruce and US spruce?
Last point: the neck: I am not familiar with the woods, but is the guitar neck made of let's say rosewood different than ebony, does it affects the sound

- WHO IS PLAYING BETTER SINCE YOU STARTED TO JOIN CHORDIE?
I did, living and playing most of the time alone, the difference since I am here, between "how I played in January and today" is remarkable and some others tell me the same.
Playing so long and not bad, well I AM PROUD to spread the word that my playing style is today at least 2x better than in January. A lot better, if you read all the topics, and if you LISTEN to advise from other chordians.
I can only say: CHORDIE BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER, ALLOWS A LOT OF WAYS TO COMMUNICATE AND INSPIRES OTHER PEOPLE PLAYING GUITAR.
Young, and even without a guitar, find peace and knowledge here, makes you stronger in playing guitar. YOU HAVE JUST TO FOLLOW ADVISE.
Older people, what can I say, DO YOU HAVE THE SAME FEELING? And what about the young people? Do you feel, think the same way as I do?

What is so special about the sixties? MUSIC or EVENTS, and even POLITICS.
You can write a book about the sixties. What I love in that music is the evolution into psychedelic and complex music.
Seventies, a lot of real popular sixties groups, didn't survive.
What is the influence regarding the time line? seventies: T-rex, Elton John, a short anarchistic period: punk, sex pistols followed by a DISCO hype, Gloria Gaynor Donna Summer and a man who was loved by almost everybody BARRY WHITE. It is weird to see some names, Gloria GAYnor, and her smashit I Will Survive. See Marvin GAY, he changed it in GAYE.
Early eighties; the so called "new wave"
Nineties: suddenly: Smell like teen spirit, followed by a lot of bands and it is called 'grunge"
Also hard rock metal came to the public.
2000- today, I just noticed that a lot of groups exist, BUT WHAT IS THE MUSIC STYLE TODAY? I go for, a word I don't like at all: R&B.
Please who is specialised in putting groups, their influence on a timeline?

Last_rebel, don corleone, upyerkilt, old doll to many to mention. It's not because you don't see your name here that I am not reading your topics, so here my apologies. I love this kind of topics, because
- I know pretty good the music and the timeline (timeline is very important)
- I love music "classics like Mozart" but also pop, blues, rock, hardrock, some disco, some RAP)
- a (disabled: and here is chordie playing an important role, all those nice people here, they keep me feeling good) pretty good guitar and I learn so much here.
There was indeed a kind of "a black hole" the blues from US to UK, rediscovery by a bunch of people: go to see John Mayall and the people who played with him.
Back to the beatles, I was thinking of the fact that DECCA, refused them, but they accepted the tremelous: main reason harmony. I go for Corleones answer. ALSO their solo careers were good, A LOT OF PEOPLE GAVE BAD CRITICS.
What made the Beatles so great, MUSIC, chemistry between them, and they evolved from a "catchy" tune, better EASIER TO PLAY FOR US, and they always surprised us, using other chords, add the engineers, and the music evolved with years. I have a book about the sound evolution, in casu the Beatles. The Rolling Stones, "dressed to kill" started as a blues group, and evolved too. They also wrote some songs, and I mean BALLADS, like Ruby Tuesday Lady Jane, and a lot more. To discuss that we need a new topic

For what it's worth: I have a Gibson SG Menace, a killer guitar. BUT, as I wrote I am a PRS man, and you should try the SE serie, look at www.zzounds.com or www.musiciansfriend.com to have an idea about the SG guitars. There are US GIBSON SG for a reasonable price.
It might be possible that if you go for an Epiphone, they have real good guitars, and my favourite is not the Epiphone SG 400 but the EPIPHONE SPECIAL SG, and also the cheapest (199$, I think) but that's a matter of taste.
If you like SG's, I should spend more $$ and having a Gibson SG.
Look at the prices on these sites, but take also a look on eBay, I did some really great business also because of the very strong €. If I go to a music store here, I will pay at least twice the price.
