Bill, you're FINE!  smile  I do hope you have some time to get in and try one of these songs out though... maybe give us a recording?  smile

Scott - we're now onto the 10th of October.  You better get your hiney down to the man cave and carve out a tune for us! You said you could do ONE of these... I can't wait to hear which one it is!  I'm also intrigued to find out how they sound with the distortion cranked.  ha ha!

I thought about trying Ripple on my own, and I might still give it a shot.  Then I was going to try Take it Easy.  I printed it out, and tried to strum through it a little - however Mekidsdad still has issues ingrained deep within his psyche, where he thinks all covers need to sound exact and stopped me mid-strum mentioning I should listen to the song to get the strumming pattern.  I thought, "Well shucks! Sure, I could do that.  I'm sure my standard strum pattern could be adjusted a little.  But HECK!  This is for the FSOTM!"

Now, I'm thinking I need to just TOTALLY CHANGE it up and turn it into something that sounds NOTHING like the original!  Ba ha ha ha ha!  (evil laugh)  Re-arrangement time!  wink  Anyone else going to try to butcher one of these songs with me?  tongue

LOL!  Hmm... that might just count as dino's name going in twice... if we go by the non-rule related rules I provided...  tongue

Time lapse photography can be tricky... you spend hours upon hours to only speed it up and end up with a few minutes worth of viewing.  wink  Very nice though, and I agree with the others.  I'd love to see and listen to more.

What about you and Dondra, Bill?  I understand there's record flooding pretty far in off the coast.  I hope you two are safe, dry, and haven't completely lost power. Stop in and let us know you're well when you get a chance to.  Take care!

Well my goodness!  I never do quite remember when you celebrate Thanksgiving way up North.  smile  I wish you a very happy Thanksgiving weekend!  Be full with Turkey and all the trimmings!  Enjoy family and friends, and don't forget the pie!  big_smile  We'll see you when you all come back out of your food coma.

A pretty little love song.  Nice Jim!  smile

Thank you again to everyone who shared song suggestions, as well as your thoughts!  The new thread for the October FSOTM is up, as well I've just posted the thread for November all about how those songs will be chosen!  See that thread here:  http://www.chordie.com/forum/viewtopic. … 09#p177509

When the idea for this forum section started out, it was no more than a simple thread posted, and an idea by a member.  The member chose the song, and a bunch of people joined in on covering the song along with her (ahem, Jan).  That amazing member then became a moderator here, with the main purpose of helping out in this new section of the forums created to carry on the idea of a Featured song of the month!

We continued picking songs as moderators.  Then we asked for song suggestions.  We picked names out of a hat at times and have gone back and forth with asking for song suggestions or names.  The section moderators have tried to keep things fresh and mix it up a little here and there with how the Featured song is chosen each month.  We had some great suggestions on how to run it for the next month and have come to a decision on how to change it up - yet again!  Get ready...

Would YOU like to be the one to pick ONE of the songs of the month for NOVEMBER?

This month will be similar to previous months, with a twist!  We'll place your names in a hat and we'll pick ONE person's name from the hat, and let YOU pick one of the songs to feature as the Song of The Month!

We will still have two songs... the moderators of this section (UJB, Jandle, and myself) will take a list of ALL the song suggestions previously made in other months that were NOT chosen, and we'll choose one of those songs as the second song to feature as the Song of The Month!

What? That's right!  If you have previously submitted a song suggestion for the Featured Song of The Month and it wasn't chosen in that month, there's a chance that it could still get chosen THIS month!  We thought this was a fair way to try to ensure that MORE people get a chance to have their suggestion chosen, as well as to try to balance things a little. There were a few months where we had some songs that were very very similar.  Other months the songs chosen were unknown to some of our friends across the pond (awesome songs, but sometimes it's difficult to try to cover something totally unknown).  There's some members who are far more talented than others and they may choose a song that's maybe a bit more advanced to play.  The PLAN with this is by moderation choosing a song that's already been suggested, you have a second chance at "winning" and we can try to ensure that there's two songs next month that are complementary and hopefully everyone can participate a little more.  big_smile  We would like to thank easybeat for putting us on track with this suggestion!

Now, that said - some have expressed an interest in a vote and there was some confusion last month.  I'd like to clarify.  We try every month to make the determination by the end of the month.  SO - by about the 25th of October, the song will be chosen!  If you want to put your name in the hat, or put your thoughts in and try to sway moderation to to choose a specific song from those previously suggested, you'll need do to so before that date!  smile  (cheat like Roger - tongue) We are very sorry for any confusion caused last month; we were hoping you all would share your thoughts on song suggestions made before the hat came out.  Because we didn't hear much feedback on those songs that were already suggested in the thread, and just received a bigger list, we just tossed 'em in the hat.  That said, holy crows the list is now HUGE for us to choose from!

If YOU would like to choose the next Featured Song of the Month

Reply to this thread with something interesting that indicates your desire!
No need to pick the song yet! Surprise everyone with your choice if your name gets pulled from the hat!
Just enter your name in this thread for a chance to WIN your choice of song!

Examples: "PICK ME!  PICK ME!"
"I want to pick the song"
"Tomatoes are fruits.  Drop my name in the hat please!."
*or whatever imaginable thing you can add that also includes something that makes it clear that you want a chance to choose the next FSOTM!  big_smile  We'll try to pay attention to those saying, "don't put my name in, I just wanted to comment" this time!  I know there were some past months where folks wanted to add their thoughts in the thread, but didn't want ther name in the hat.  We'll do our best!  So if you DO want your name in, make sure you say so!

http://www.blogcdn.com/www.walletpop.ca/media/2011/11/6hat-1321890983.jpg

Everyone that posts in this thread indicating their desire will have their name "placed in a hat" and the name will be randomly chosen.  If you are chosen, you then get to choose the song of the month!  The winner will be chosen with names pulled from a hat and it will be broadcast via VIDEO!  The winner's name shall be posted in this thread near the end of October.  The winner must submit the ONE song of their choice for the song of the month by the end of the Month.

This thread is now open, and we're ready!  NOW TAKING NAMES!  If you posted in the past that you wanted to be in for this month, it does NOT count!  You've got to post in THIS thread.  Also, feel free to cheat, try to sway moderator's decisions, trick others into not submitting their names so that you can win, tell us that we have to pick a certain song from the previous ones submitted, insist that Christmas is coming and you want to hear Christmas music for the ENTIRE month of November, etc... just keep it clean and in good fun!  big_smile

So what are you waiting for?  READY?  SET?  GO!

Reflections as she packed and headed off to college, clearly she was going to miss her siblings.  Deep and beautiful thoughts shared with no one, until Mom and Dad found it one day.  I expect you had to dry a few tears after reading this one.  I nearly had to and have never met your kids!  smile  Bethany, you'll possibly be unhappy with your Dad for posting this publicly.  I hope not though.  Things like this are treasures to us parents.  Poetry allows others to see inside your thoughts sometimes, and from a parental point of view, it's an immeasurable gift... to know you treasured your childhood and didn't run out the door screaming, "I'm gone!  Adios!  You're all finally off my back!  whoo hoo!"  wink  Beautifully written.

Thanks all for your feedback!  We'll discuss and a new thread will be posted soon!  smile

This sounds like a few different guitars going at once.  Very talented.  I can hardly keep a rhythm going sometimes, she's got the rhythm and solo all at once!  This is really something, TF!

I've got a slew of recordings taken with my Zoom recorder too, which I forgot to share with Joe before I left.  I'll work on editing those and putting them up, here's one for now:  https://soundcloud.com/user-935684483/bobby-mcgee

I've also added Ripple to the Featured Song of the Month thread!  smile

Well, I realized on the way home that I didn't save all the recordings I made with my Zoom to Joe's hard drive.  So, I guess it's up to me to post those!  Late Saturday evening, when everyone was ready to put the guitars away we decided to give Ripple a try together.  Uncle Joe's Band, MekidsDad, myself, and Joe's friend Scott are all playing and singing along.  Here's our late night attempt for ya'll!

So, this is the second time we've made the trek across the southern half of NY, then all the way through the hills of PA to the Southern portion where Joe's camp is located.  It's always a beautiful drive.  It's not a short little jiggidy jog, but it's well worth it!  The GPS says it's about 5 1/4 hour drive.  With both kids in the car, toilet breaks and food, it took us about 6 1/2 hours to get there (and to get home as well).  That's really not bad considering!  They were really well behaved in the car the whole time, and hardly argued.  Thank goodness we have a mid-size vehicle now.  I can't imagine taking that trip in one where they'd be sitting elbow to elbow though!  wink

We arrived after dark Friday night, although not nearly as late as we arrived last year.  Thankfully, the traffic (due to mostly construction) wasn't too bad in Harrisburg this year!  When we got to camp, Joe had pizza ready.  Jim and I weren't too hungry, but the girls both enjoyed a piece of Pizza.  We sat up for a while, played a little guitar and Steph pulled out her uke.  Mostly we just chatted though.  Then most everyone got tired and headed to bed.  However, like old friends who've known one another forever, Joe and I stayed up chatting.  And chatting.  And chatting.  Then I mentioned, since I had to get up in the morning to work for an hour, that I should probably try to get a few hours of sleep.  We figured it was around 3 AM.  I looked at the time, and it was 5 AM!  Holy smokes!  smile  I had to get up in an hour!  Ha!

Each morning, Joe of course made an awesome breakfast, Zurf's coffee pot gift was still there so we had coffee, all was well despite the lack of sleep! The local fella, Jeff, and his wife came over with a giant bucket of chocolate - Kate had something to keep busy with!  I was shocked by Jeff.  He's a trucker and sings and plays amazingly.  Dare I say, beautifully (not what I'd expect from the image of a trucker).

While it would have been nice with more people, I appreciated the more intimate picker circle inside.  I had the opportunity to chat with Joe's friend Scott more than I had last year.  He originally struck me as an odd duck, but really, he's just a super nice guy.  He loves music, and loves to share it!  While he can play anything anywhere up and down the neck, he and Joe made great efforts to pick songs that were more well known and tried to teach Jim a few of them.  Jim's now got a bunch more songs saved that he can play and work on playing for next year.  They use all sorts of barre chords, so mostly I just enjoyed listening but did strum along on a few!  Luckily, I play some pretty easy stuff, so they were able to join in with me.  It was very different for me having others playing along (and shredding out solos and accompaniments to my strumming in the background).  I can't wait to listen to a few of those to see how they sounded.  I was concentrating too much on not losing my rhythm to be able to fully appreciate the extra guitars playing along at the time.  I REALLY need to have others around more to jam with!  It was a great experience.

Both nights our girls stayed up until about midnight.  Each day though, they were really pretty well behaved. There was only one moment where KK had a little fit; she straightened herself out quick enough.  Steph wowed everyone with her Uke and voice.  While she played one particular song multiple times, I don't think anyone tired of hearing it.  She amazes the heck out of me.  I hadn't really even heard her play the songs she did fully before the weekend, as she generally plays in her room with the door closed.  Joe and Scott's singing has come a long way in the past year, Jim's playing has improved, Steph's gotten amazing, and I... well... I enjoyed all of it!  Ha ha!

I think we stayed up until around 3 AM the second night.  More amazing breakfast in the morning, and Joe traded out the rest of the cookies for the leftover pizza.  That pizza came in quite handy!  When we got home and finally settled in (after driving through a pretty bad storm 30 minutes from arrival home), we warmed it up for our late dinner.

I honestly can't say thanks enough!  Joe is a great host, and a wonderful friend.  Joe, should you decide to, we'd be thrilled to join you for a "camp work party" in the spring to help with the addition, general clean up, or whatever.  You've got a great little place there, and we look forward to many more trips - rain or shine!  I do hope you didn't get blasted too badly with storms after we left.  On our way out, all the cows and even sheep we drove past were hunkering down expecting a storm!

Thank you again Joe!  smile

sad  The furry friends are the ones who love you no matter what.  They love you stinky, they love you sad, they love you even if you've been mean to them.  They're thrilled to see you even if you just left the house 1 minute ago.  Sorry for your loss.  sad

NO!  Get out of here!  errr... I mean... HI BILL!  smile  <---- I was just kidding, you know that!

Good to see you around here.  smile  I hope that being friends on Facebook helps you to stay grounded and not forget us here on Chordie.  I don't comment a LOT on there (usually.  cuz yeah sometimes I do), but I do see all your stuff and contemplate along with your contemplations.  I hope the business works out for you.  It's nice to be able to make a bit of money from home, especially more so if it's something you enjoy doing.

While I'm happy to hear that Dondra is feeling much better these days, I'm sorry to hear you're not!  Get some rest, and feel better soon.

Beautiful lyrics as usual Jim.  I'm glad I could help with the chordpro!  smile  I see you had a little trouble, but got it on your own in the end!  Kudos to you on that one too!  smile

The spammer will disappear soon, I've no doubt, and I've banned em for now!  This sentence will mean nothing soon, and I'll look like I'm simply talking to the air!  ha ha ha!

Another month, and two more songs to choose from!  Grab your guitar, uke, harp, autoharp, band in a box, drum set, tuners, mandolin, drinks of choice, and something to record with!

Take It Easy by the Eagles:
No doubt there are a ton of different versions with different chords available here on Chordie!  I've gone ahead and found the most simple version for you here:  http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … /5887.html
The Eagles Perform "Take It Easy" during the 1998 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKpay8gumw0

"Take It Easy" is a song written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey, and recorded by the Eagles with Frey singing lead vocals. It was the band's first single, released on May 1, 1972.

Ripple by the Grateful Dead:
Again, there's a lot of different versions popping around.  Some have slightly different words, some have an A7 in there as well.  You'll have to find the version YOU like the best (because it IS a cover after all), but here's one to get you started:  http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … /7289.html
Recorded Live: 10/31/1980 - Radio City Music Hall (New York, NY):  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JT8zLTaKxeE

"Ripple" is the sixth song on the Grateful Dead album American Beauty. It was released as the B-side to the single "Truckin'".  Robert Hunter wrote this song in 1970 in London in the same afternoon he wrote "Brokedown Palace" and "To Lay Me Down" (reputedly also drinking half a bottle of retsina in the process). The song debuted August 18, 1970 at Fillmore West in San Francisco. Jerry Garcia wrote the music to this song.
Several lines throughout the song have been compared to the 23rd Psalm of the Bible.

Remember, these are meant to be COVERS of the songs.

You don't have to be a "tribute" type player and make it sound exactly like the original.  You can always change it up!  Go do your thing, and come back here to post a link to your recorded version in a reply to this thread!

On your Marks!  Get Ready!  Get Set!

And...

After Saturday October 1st...

GO!

We are discussing now how to run next month's thread.  How about a vote on that? How would YOU ALL like to see the FSOTM chosen for November? Let's put THAT to a vote!  smile

Do you prefer song suggestions, or people suggestions?
Do you prefer the hat, or moderators choice, or would you prefer to put it to a membership vote for November?

How about a "theme" song suggestion?  Think... "member written songs" or "Christmas/Winter songs" or "break up songs" or "love songs" or ... any certain theme!

Let us know what YOU think!  We have lots more months ahead of us, unless the internet dies! ha ha ha!  smile  So, how would YOU like to see the November song chosen?

Good info UJB!  I'll have to try Friday evening and determine if I can get a good enough signal for what I need without heading out!  smile

Dirty Ed just had a NEW grandson, I don't know if we can tear him away from that kind of excitement for a weekend of guitars.  Maybe...

Zurf!  Katie has been talking non-stop about who she's going to meet.  She's met you on Skype, and watched some videos.  She thinks you're pretty funny and is quite intrigued to meet you.  Steph remembers you were pretty funny.  smile  Training all day Saturday doesn't sound too fun.  sad  I suppose a late Saturday trip after it all is out of order?  We'll sure miss you if you can't make it, but totally understand.  We are still holding out hope that you'll be able to stop in for a bit though.  I'm afraid we won't be there until after dark Friday however.

I'm hoping to get the cookies baked tonight.  I'll be sure to try them out on my taste testers to ensure they pass delicious inspections.  If I make enough, there might even be a few left by the time we get there!  big_smile

Joe, if you do think of anything you may want or need us to bring along let me know!  Jim's expecting a half day Friday.  I'm working until 1, so hopefully we'll be on the road by 2 (probably more like 3 with the kids) and we'll likely get there 6 to 6 1/2 hours later (thanks to the kids needing extra bathroom breaks).  So, realistically - we should arrive anytime between 8 and 10.  But it's entirely possible we could get there as early as 6!  I'm going to do my best to get everyone (including the car) PACKED Thursday night to help us out the door as early as humanly possible after work Friday.  It COULD happen!

It's ALMOST TIME!!!!  I went shopping yesterday and bought supplies to make THE COOKIES!  We're all looking forward to the trip!  We'll be down there sometime Friday (probably late, hopefully NOT running out of gas - ha ha ha ha)!  So far, I'm supposed to still work for ONE hour early Saturday morning.  So, hopefully I can get a decent enough mobile internet connection in the closest tiny little town to be able to use my phone as a mobile hotspot.  I'm taking a chance, I realize this... but it wouldn't be worth it for us to drive down Saturday only to turn around and make that long drive back Sunday.

Anything else you need or want us to bring along, Joe?

Zurf, you're gonna be there right?

Anyone else able to make it?  The leaves are starting to turn here in NY, so it should be quite beautiful at the camp!  Crisp fall mornings, guitar picking, friendship, fun.  smile  I'm excited!!!

I enjoyed listening to all the new submissions since I was last in the thread.  I like just sitting down and listening one after the other.  smile  Really great way to spend a little time on a relaxing Sunday.  Thank you for sharing, all of you!  I've commented on the recordings.  smile

Lots of great ideas in here!  I hope Jan's got a good plan for how to pick.. I'd have to put them in a hat or have someone narrow it down a bit more before I could choose.  So MANY!  AWESOME!  big_smile
