I have been playing for over 50 years Professionally so before you pickup bad habits by trying to "figure it out" save yourself the agony its not important for you to learn how to read notes but a basic understanding of the fundamentals is invaluable go to a music store and ask for a book that will teach you how to read simple chord changes save yourself the frustration and time life is to short.

A little bit of basic theory would help enormously all songs have a beginning and an end what lies between is called a progression this simply put means a song starts here and go's through a set of chord changes and repeats if you can count to 4 and know your abc's you can play simple songs an example would be "Blues eyes crying in the rain" it would look like this on paper;

G                       D           G
|////|////|////|////|////|////|////|////|:<<<these are repeat signs it means to repeat the same
in the twilite glow blue eyes  rain             4 bars for the next verse
I see you             cryin in the                  the //// marks are beats so count 4 beats to each bar

                                                                    G
                                                                    |////|////|////|////| these are 4 bars in 4/4 time
                                                       count>> 1234
sing>>> in the twilite glow I see you.  then change to the next chord for  D                 G
                               |////|////|////|////|////|:<<<<<and go back and repeat the same chords for the next verse
                               blue eyes       rain.......
                               cryin in the
this is a progresson what follows is an arrangement you have a bridge which is another set of chords and then it repeats again so print a copy of this song from Chordie and try see if you can count the beats before the next chord change,I chose this song because you said you like Willy. smile

Zurf there are quite a few high school chess clubs in my area It's good to know you enjoy this game "Da B lovin Mutant King" sounds like a movie lol

Zurf wrote:

"Handmade by American craftsmen" would probably sell better than "handmade by a B-loving American guitar mutant king".   I was president and founder of my high school chess club.  I was never good at it, but I always enjoyed it.

Hi russell I like the American Chess sets, they are all good though and patriotic to the u.s. .  You might think about adding something about Hand made by american craftsman. I for one try too buy american too keep the money here, but sometimes I have to buy from other countries. It is hard not too buy from Japan or China sometimes.

Done yourself good Russell. I haven't stared at a chessboard in a long time but perhaps at looking at the nice
board you did may spark my interest again. Never was good at it but like Jim says it helps the mind think
  more clear.

being addicted to chess is normal lol I intend to make high quality made in U.S.A. boards affordable just have to work out the cost factor per set and go from there I think the key is obtaining a wholesale charge for the wood needed the rest is just time involved smile

Nice board Russell. I'm a chess addict, so much so that i play it on my phone when I'm away from from home and hava few spare minutes. But there is nothing nicer than playing on a quality board tho.

Amy some of the old sets are collectors items beautiful for display but not practical for tournaments mostly all the sets I build are modern designed to be played in competitiion or at home for analysis when you get time I would like to see a photo of what you have smile

I joined Chesscorner.net its free and there is an option to become a member for a yearly fee of around 20 dollars and like Chordie very helpful members willing to help others once you learn the basics you can play other members for free with a interactive chess screen the only reason for the fee is there is no advertisement its self supporting and I have been a member for 2 years it dont cost anything to check it out, another site that's is free is chess games.com it also has a join option plus there are a number of free chess programs like Scid which have instructional lessons smile

Sounds like something I would like a lot are there any websites I can go too to learn? I can not do it now as I am finishing off my collage courses. maybe someplace to go in 4 or 5 months.

dino its hard to believe how many think the game is really tough to learn its a lot like warfare, controlling area, attack, defense, strategy and tactics and once you learn how each piece moves and a few simple openings the rest is easy smile

Some people get drunk and celebrate the new year I decided to inaugurate a new sideline enterprise I got together with a friend we worked on this project I do play a lot of tournaments and I have my weekly chess club to enjoy, the one thing I have noticed is the high cost of quality chessboards and pieces which is beyond the budget of most chess players so I joined forces with a friend who has all the equipment to make my designs come to life this is the first.

This is one http://www.mediafire.com/ another idea is to download Picasa its a free google app and they have a free storage online called Picasa albums both of these  have the option to go public or private. smile

I believe I can handle three chords and most of the older country and rock songs just use 3 or 4 some of the new country songs sound like they were cut from a cookie cutter I dont care to much for them or rap so that leaves me with folk and songs from the 60's and 70's but there's always blues (3 chords) and there's a ton of them smile

good that you found a solution to it I dont think I know 3000 songs lol

If the page is all you need take a screen shot and print it or copy and paste it into your word program and print. smile

Jim to my knowledge its one song at a time perhaps one of the other mods or members can advise furthru.

my condolences on the loss of your friend its never easy to accept losing a friend I get a page cannot be found message on the link you provided I dont know if its my browser or the link.
