Ok, that Havens tune was an awesome representation of playing a song the way YOU feel it. I've always thought that some people have enough built in rhythm/musical sense that they know how to make a song recognizable, or make it their own. Doc, don't worry about picking some and strumming some--- check out Tommy Emmanuel. I do the same thing and I generally know how most songs go. Also if you listen to artists who have been playing the same song for 20 - 30 years, they change them up quite a bit when performing live. Keeps the song fresh and the musicians don't get bored. So go your own way, and let the rest look for strum patterns.

I too learned to play the "easy" F and Bm. I have always played them like that and I always will. After 20 years it's hard to unlearn. I just taught myself not to hit the open strings. When strumming quickly, I think not hitting the open strings takes as much talent as playing the barre chords. No bashing from me tunedeaf

There is a fee for the full lessons on his site. His website has been up and running for a couple of weeks now. I'm not paying for lessons but only because I can't afford them. But if you price private lessons by the hour and then figure you can have access to any of his stuff 24/7, it could be well worth it. And don't dog a guy for good promotion of his enterprise. He is in a band and conducts real lessons as well.

This guy really takes the time to show people strumming patterns on the different song lessons clips he has on youtube. I've some of the strumming threads on here and thought this might help.

Al,

I too am 40, and have a wife who indulges my hobby, so definitely get a new guitar. But before you do, take your Fender in to a luthier/repair shop. They can fix your saddle and make a new bridge for a lot cheaper than a new guitar, and they can check the overall setup. You'll be glad you did. I just had my Kalamazoo Oriole set up and a new nut made and it is well over 60 years old. Second hand guitars rule!
