Are you sure you are tunning it to E on the tuner and not E sharp or E flat?

I made that mistake once with a chromatic tuner.

No flowers this year for the wife and kids. Instead we went to an indoor water park. We took my little sister and her boyfriend as well. It was rather fun for all of us, getting to swim and go down a ton of water slides in the middle of February. However for the wife I had my sister watch our kids in the hotel room for about an hour so me and the wife could go down to the hot tub, with the wet bar, and we got us a few drinks and went outside! Snow coming down all over the place and us outside in our swim wear relaxing in the hot tub. Was simply the best thing we have got to do in a LONG time.

Then when we got home on Valentines day, I went to the liquor store and got the fixins for her favorite drink and we just sat on the couch and watched a movie while enjoying a drink.

We live uneventful lives. Three kids will tend to do that for ya.

I got my electric guitar and barre chords are 100x easier. Not Mr. Joe Lightning at them, but then again I am not fast at any of the chords yet. I can now get B allot easier then I can get A now, big sausage finger make A a little tricky for me. But its coming along nicely.

As far as the strings on my Strat are light 9s. I bought a replacement set for when I am playing at 2A.M. and there is no place to get strings and I have one go TWING!!!! But I got 10s. going to try a little heavier strings.

EDIT: my raw-some grammar kicking in. O.o

Question, when I play the 5th, 4th, and 3rd string they are fine. When I fret them around the 2nd and 3rd fret and strum them the string rattles against the 21st fret. Is this normal? I had it set up by a local guitar man, charged me 30 bucks and said there ya go.

The neck doesn't appear to have any twist, warp, or bow to it at all. My little sisters boyfriend told me to just adjust the truss rod and it will correct that. But I was to the understanding that the truss rod was only to be used to make sure the neck was straight, which it is. If I would use to truss rod to get rid of the buzzing it would pull the neck out of alignment.

I guess I should be more clear. With the amp on and the guitar plugged in it doesn't buzz though the amp. It is just when I have the amp either low or off that I hear it the most.

Is this a common thing? Does this mean there is something that needs to be set further? Or is this just an electric guitar?

Cleveland.... But that's about it. Other than that, I've never seen anything really interesting or fun to do here....

Cleveland is rated number 10 as most dangerous cities in the whole country. I try to stay OUT of Cleveland. I am not a drinker or much of a partier so the Flats are not my thing. I did however take the wife and kids up there to the Zoo, The Great Lakes Science Center, and Natural History Museum, and had a blast. I did however get out of there as soon as we were done.

Have you lives in Zanesville long?

My mom used to work at the Red Lobster there, I dunno about 10+ years ago.

Edit: I only live about 50 minutes from Zanesville.

Um, about 10 years or so. I live about 5 minutes away from the Red Lobster.... It's an alright town, tends to get pretty boring at times

Is any place in Ohio not boring??

I am writing a some notes rather a guide for myself in my learning progression. I want to write down all that I need to work on and some that are beyond me yet. I use the computer to guide me though this learning adventure and allot of times I don't want to sit at the computer and play, so I need something that I can take with me to the living room, Kitchen, ect.

I have started in the "book" most of the common chords. A, B, C, D, E, F, G, all major, minor and all 7th major chords. What others do you use and need attention in learning and practicing.

How much do split chords come into play early in the learning steps.

I hear allot of talk, reference to major 7th, what about major 9

OK so now that I have most of the chords used, whats next? Do I need to commit to memory where all the notes are on each string.

Start learning scales? Pentatonic, Lydian, Dorian, ect?

Chord progressions?

While learning chords I will working on changing chords.

So I guess my main question is I am trying to make a sort of cheat sheet/notepad for me to learn off of. What is the best outline to follow? In what order should one go to best maximize there time and efforts to learn, and not only learn but learn correctly?

I have been to ALLOT of learning on-line sites, anyone who has linked one I went and checked it out and gave its due attention. Now I am just trying to get all that information in one place, MY notebook.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

So much to comment on this thread.

First Jello?  Bill Cosby singing with a bunch of 5-10 year old kids,  J-E-L-L-O!  Theres always room for Jello.

Next, Grits are something that I can't handle. They are plain and simple but lack FLAVOR, this is just me of course.

Biscuits and Gravy are AMAZING!  Here in Ohio Bob Evans sausage gravy is where it is at.

I had some computer friends driving for 2 months, I know sounds kinda crazy but they bought a full sized van and packed up and left there homes and didn't plan on returning for 2 months, driving around the U.S. They live in Boston Mass. My house was on there list to stop, one of there first places actually. So when they got here I made up some BBQ ribs and other good fixins for em. We had such a good time I offered my couch and recliner for them to crash, they accepted. The next morning we went out for breakfast and while we were talking biscuits and gravy came up and the 2 of them looked at us as if we where nuts'o. Need I mind you they only live 400 miles from us and they have NEVER heard of biscuits and gravy, so they both got it and LOVED EM. They ended up staying for about 4 days and I think we ate biscuits and gravy 4 times in there. They couldn;t get enough of em.

With all that being said brings me to something else that is funny.   SODA POP COLA PEPSI COKE

Here in Ohio it is POP
down south it is SODA

what does everyone call there "POP?

When my 8 year old daughter came home from school 2 days ago and seen my guitar she named it so. No idea why but when she walked in she said "JOSIE!" I just kinda looked at her and I think I even said "WHAT?" She informed me that is my guitars name. So it works for me now.

Like I said I convinced the wife to let me go with a bit more costly guitar.

Been to about 10 guitar shops over the past week. Well I just came back from Guitar Center today with guitar and amp in hand.  I am very excited. I am however displeased with the service of Guitar Center. I asked does that include a setup, action intonation ect, they said YES. So I picked the guitar I wanted handed it to the guy while he was "looking" over it, had a few wrenches out and stuck em in and I went to go look at some other things while he "set it up." I thought he set it up, when I got home I started to play it and WOW something was very very wrong with it, not wanting to drive 3 hours to go back and say what the heck. I took it to one of my dads old friends that has a local guitar shop. He started laughing and said where did you get this? I told him he simply said no wonder, and spent about 30 miinutes giving it a good old tune-up. So I guess when that guy real;y was just "LOOKING" at it.

But anyway I am very happy with it and hope to be playing for years to come.

To everyone, Thank You for all the great help and advice.

I like that!

I like the normal music but here and there I like something thats original.

This song I obsessed over for the LONGEST time, listened to it at least 100+ times. Most of his stuff is cool but for some reason this one tickled me fancy the most.

Once you get past the corny guy, which I think adds to his "BEAT!"

OK so this guy made is own musical instrument, and didn't follow any usual patterns or preconceptions of what a music instrument is or even should be.

Any way he has some funky lyrics and the music is unique.

I just bought an acoustic and am teaching myself to play.  I have many sites and dvd's showing chord progressions, but can anyone suggest an easy song or two for a beginner to start out with?  Thanks.

I got the Negative vote from a few about leaning that song first. The picking on that song can get a tad confusing, and the chord changes they said are a little beyond beginner. >< It didn't stop me from continuing playing what I knew and starting to learn more of the song.

NICE, my wife will go nuts if I can get what I want at a bargain price.

Did you get it on-line? or from a guitar shop?

Here's one for you guys.

Option A: $500 used '97 American Strat, Few dents and dings, but sounds good?
Option B: $500 new MIM Strat?
Option C: $200-$300 used MIM Strats, and spend the extra few bucks on an upgraded amp?

I do not have an amp at this time so I have to buy one regardless.

Well thank you Doc. I have been up and down so many list of guitars in the past few months. I do however LOVE to sound of Fenders. I found a video of an online guitar teacher going over the difference between Mexican and American Fenders. The hardware in the American fender is much better.

I am going to look into new and used guitars I am hoping next week. If I decide to go new I will have to go Mexican, if I go used I can get an American. So it's all going to come down to finding an American in good shape that I love.

well I can hear music in my head I have heard the song about 1/2 a million times. Its a matter of PLAYING it thats got me a little flustered, however since my last post I have got my problem area down for now.

I am not have a hard time with the fret hand, I can generally go to the right frets, not that they are that hard of moves but even so. My problem comes from my right hand going DAAAA what sting??

It goes string wise  "6-4-2-3-6-4-2-3-5-4-2-3-4-3-2-3" So I was having a hard time going up when I should have been going down, ect.

does this just mean chord these out, meaning go Em, play the strings you need, Dsus4, play the strings you need and so on?

    Em    Dsus4    C9    G

For learning a new song, OK my first song. Should you commit a line to memory, as so it's almost second nature before moving on to the next line?

I am attempting to get "Time of You Life" by Green Day.

Well as as 2 days ago I was given a very low budget to work with, so I decided that for the buck a Line 6 Spider III 15w was the way to go, some nice features for only $100.

I went last night to a Fender dealer with the wife and kids. He has everything from $150 Squires up to $4,000 fender customs.

While we where there 2 guys where playing the guitar independently, one was playing a $200-$300 Squire, and the other was playing an American Fender. My wife overheard the 2 playing and asked what was so different about the 2 of them, one sounded so sweet and the other sounded kinda tonal. They where both on about the same playing level, far beyond mine of course. However she pointed to the one with the American Fender and said WOW I like that one.

This was my chance to slip it in there the difference in price means the difference in what you get. So needless to say my budget just went from $400 to to around what I can get an off color (pink) American Fender or a used American Fender for. However I might have to wait a few more weeks to actually go get one. Even if I don't decide to go the Fender route I now have $500-$600 to spend on just the guitar. hehehe

I am SOO glad we decided to kill a few minutes in that music store at the moment!
