i was classicaly trained also which does build up great foundations in which to work upon. Its another skill again using that without your books. Im in a delema. I want to teach my nephews by theory. position timing scales and then chords but i have noticed when people get older they get lazy and need the quick fix. got to get them when their young i guess. I ll try a bit of a mixture. If you learn properly then you can learn anything even if you havent heard it before.

I learnt to play a beautiful antique round back mandolin when i was 8. By theory. Only for a couple of years. I have picked up the Mandola too which has a deeper sound. I am getting a new solid wood mandolin for chrissy yippee. looking forward to jamming without theory and trying some chords.

Hi there! I am all excited to discover this excellent site chordie. 43 years young I play guitar 4 meditation when i get a rare moment but socialize with wonderful musicians sometimes where i love to sing (harmonize) along if they are unplugged (mic shy). I played the mandolin at 8 and started the classical guitar. I learnt all the theory stuff until about 16. dont know what happened then thats life. couldnt play along without a book so left it for a long while. But now I am ready to break out and JUST PLAY. I can now learn some great songs just hope they can stay in my head haha gotta make time to practice and more practice til they get in the heart ey? peace
