Re: Gibson vs Fender

I like the feel of an sg and the sound of a strat.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

Couldn't decide, so I have an LesPaul Studio and a Tele.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

It's a personal preference both guitars have there merits. On the pocket book the Fenders are more afforadable than the Gibsons as a whole. I speak of the made in USA Fenders and Gibsons. What style of guitar are you confortable playing? What sound are you going for? The most important question what can you afford?

Re: Gibson vs Fender

Personally I like the Gibsons for their warmth and sustain. But it just a matter of personal choice.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

The warmth and sustain is due to the Humbucker type pickups also the weight & density of the wood (maghonagy) hard to beat.

It is all so funny, if you enter a big guitarstore, you CAN NOT decide what fender you will buy. Personnaly I should take, a reissue, a name like Eric Johnson, even a relic. BUT I have 2 special fenders: 1 fender telecaster California Beach, reissue from a '52 in a dirty light greenish color, same as the most carcolors then. I also have a genuine US strat all complete 1964, good investment(s) I saw recently a tele CB 500$ more than mine in 2004, and the strat in 2 years double.

I have a quit large collection, included a lot of Gibsons, dove, hummingbird, les paul supreme, custom 67 first year they started to make them again, sg, flying V. Same wood as their more expensif others and same hummies, but a lot cheaper. I am more a PRS man. For some songs PRS is better, other songs, if you want a more specific tone use FENDER and finally GIBSON.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

PSR's are nice guitars but they carry a hefty price tag also. I believe most of us would have to sell blood or give up the first born to afford one. You can put together a semi to custom guitar for less than the price you pay for a new PRS or LP. (I noticed the DOC in you name) It sounds like you have a very nice collection.

You are also right in stating that if you want a Fender tone buy anFender ans same with the Gibson.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

I have to agree, I am more of a PRS or Fender guy myself.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

Whats PRS?

Re: Gibson vs Fender

Paul Reed Smith guitars.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

Are they like fenders with single coil pickups?

www.myspace.com/rdxfunk

Re: Gibson vs Fender

Some in similar body style to a strat and the single cut away like a les paul. Most that I,ve seen have humbuckers. Do a web search for Paul Reed Smith guitars and you'll see their details.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

PRS is a brand of very good electric guitars, I didn't know the existence of this guitar. Went to a musicstore and the BEST THING YOU CAN DO TO COMPARE is, sit down on an amp, feeling the sound vibrations in your, you know what I mean. The sales man gave me about 5 guitars, the classic les pauls (custom & standard), and fender strat & tele. After playing those guitars, we were two, a drummer who plays guitar as well, and finally "the man" gave us a prs custom 24, never heard of that guitar, I tried it, and the sound & vibe's were so amazing, that I put money away to buy this guitar.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

To answer the question, YES. To be more specific, at this moment you will find a PRS SE EG, with 3 single coils like fender stratocaster. I have 3 different PRS EG's USA made, for 2 years, except for the model Humb-Single-Humb, which lasted for 4 years.

The single coils are placed in domino style and are lindy fralin pick-ups, look their website. A lot of people prefer that model with single coils compared to the sound of a genuine fender strat 1964. You will have a hard time to find a PRS EG USA, and have good luck. Best place to look is eBay, usa (ebay.com), germany (ebay.de), netherlands (ebay.nl) in France it will be an exception, more a miracle to find them. For me as I wrote before is

1) PLAYING

2) COLLECTING

And conclusion is, the PRICES are really getting insane.

For an original Gibson les paul standard 58-59-60, you need to be rich, 2005: up to 200.000$ now, 2007, up to 400.000. Most expensif is the 1959

Re: Gibson vs Fender

you are right, I am a medical doctor, but not practising since november 2004, due to injuries from a carcrash, hitting a tree driving 60 miles/h caused by sliding over an unexpected place with water. Started again but had to stop because of too much pain, so I am the 1 on 10.000 independent physicians, who have a very high amount of insurrance money, which I receive each month.

I have a lumbar vertebra who exploded in 4 peaces, 1 is pushing on my spinal chord, result kind of paralysis, and also 32 fractures in my left foot. I am at home after 3 years working again, couldn't stand the pain, and having a cardiac arrest a few hours after the accident. Since that moment there is only one thing I wanted for me: LIVE, EVERY DAY, and I am also a hugue USA fan, not the "must see city's, NY, LA, Miami) but just cruising around in a mustang convertible. That accident, changed my life entirely.

Thanks, and I wish that NOBODY has to live like I do. Money will not cure me, but it makes life easier

Re: Gibson vs Fender

Your right money can not make you better. You are also correct about live as most take it for granted. But you are alive and guitars make you happy. Money allows you certain freedoms but not from you pain. Enjoy you life and play your guitars use them as away to express yourself. Just remember to be thankful that you have your life.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

Me again, I think you are a real nice person, especially when I start talking about guitars, because I love to discuss about that kind of things. It is amazing how you analysed my username, is it possible on this site to add you in a list? And yes, I have spend a lot of money, before and (even more) after my car crash.

I was co-investor in a guitar shop, my share was around 7000$, you know how it works, loan money, is always a problem to get your money back ( I even could bring it in my tax) and I proposed, because they started, in 1996 I think, and asked them to pay me in music instruments in stead of money. I also got one of my patients and a good friend. A Gibson Les Paul Studio, black & golden hardware for 600$ see the prices now.

Thanks for reacting on my questions, and I thank everybody because for me it is very hard to go to guitar stores in my condition, I always say God Bless The Internet and Television. It is my only way to communicate with others

Re: Gibson vs Fender

It was real nice what you wrote. I am glad that I live, because I had even a cardiac arrest. So I know, how it feels to die

1/ ANGRY, IT IS IMPOSSIBLE, so you really fight.

2/ After the fight, you start to accept the fact that you will leave this world.

3/ Very strange, my opinion: you are becoming very, in a way of speaking, happy to fade away, I also still remember exactly what I said to my former girlfriend, like give my family strength, tell them I love them, and don't think too much, concerning me, because I wknow that I will always be in your mind. I am leaving now, I don't know where, but it's finished, and yes: a flat line. But she screamed so loud, being with me because she's a nurse, that the whole bunch of doctors did a good reanimation, with medication, and the, I always call them, things to iron, clear- nothing- second time again clear, and yes I was back. I did not see a white light, the only thing that was important for me, was french fries. I was obsessed by french fries, that's why I think that you take your last taught with you.

People can say he didn't suffer, EXCUSE ME, I started like they often write, to be transported in critical condition, your body produce "endorfines", = morphine but made by your brain. That is also the reason why marathon, or triathlon fanatics, commit sometimes suicide, lack of "endorfines". But to be honest, I had 32 fractures in MY LEFT FOOT?! and a exploded lumbar verteber (?) in 4 pieces. And yes, I was, like a miracle, very heavy insured, and that also allowed me to buy guitars. But if somebody can cure me, my left leg is getting worse: direction paralysis, I will be happy to give away all my guitars.

Thanks for your support, I hate it to come out with this problem, but sometimes the need is there

Hi,

I am fairly new on here, but I have seen a couple of your posts and wanted to say something. First off I think you have a great message with regards to health and money, you brought a bit of a tear to my eye when I read your last post. Sometimes people don't enjoy the freedoms that they are given and take all of the small things like jogging down to the mail box for granted. Keep on keeping on bud and God Bless you!

Re: Gibson vs Fender

I played a SG for about 2 years, also I have owned other Gibsons & Older Epiphones. I have Owned Fenders for over 50 years. I currently have 6 Fenders, a G & L Strat Copy & several various brand Gibson & Fender Copies. All the Gibsons and Fenders are great. With various electronics you can get any sound you want. If your playing out its smart to have at least 2 guitars st the ready anyway, and it gives things a professional look when you change instruments for different songs. I always have at least 2 electrics an an acoustic in the stand when I work out.
My Suggestion is to go to a good music shop, and try both out and buy the one you like. Later on, when you get a few dollars, buy the other one. Just remember that within the SG and Strat lines that you can spend big bucks.
Stay away from the so called Autograph models & similar types. Get one with the Electronics & Finish that you like.
I really suggest buying a guitar that you play first. There is a difference in guitars, even in exactly the same model.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

Gutaardocphil.....

Wow..this was suposed to be a shallow discussion of fender vs gibson. Your posts elevated it to something more...Real?

Bless you... Play on brother

Re: Gibson vs Fender

Hey Jersydevil I was wondering why you suggest to stay away from autograph models. Is it about the money or is there another reason. Just curious. I own the Gibson Lucille and I am quite happy with it. I have noticed however that besides BB I have yet to see any other musicians playing one

what a long strange trip it's been

Re: Gibson vs Fender

I have a Les Paul Custom and a Strat. The Les Paul is hands-down a better instrument. If I am playing difficult pieces, I always use the Les Paul, because of the flat fingerboard and spacing of the strings. However, the Strat just has that certain bright sound (you know what I mean) that I just cannot get from ANY Gibson. So, when I do my little home recording projects I just pick the one that will deliver the sound I want.

Fall down seven times, stand up eight.

Re: Gibson vs Fender

What a silly forum. I have a Tele and a Les Paul, both are great and both are different. I personally prefer the tone of the LP
