Topic: Cheesy Beach Type Tunes

Next month several family members are chipping in and renting this killer ocean front house on Hatteras:

There will be 25+ including my brother's and sister's family, aunt and uncle as well as all my cousins (and their kids) from my mother's side. I haven't seen many of them in a long time and although I'm leery about spending such a long time in a single house with so many people, I'm sure we'll have a great time. I've got dibs on one of the downstairs bedrooms, my uncle has the other - we've been known to watch the sunrise on many beer drinking evenings, so the little ones will all be upstairs.

So anyway, the crowd will range in age from real youngsters (3 or 4 years old) to pushing 60. I'm looking for some suggestions for sing-a-long beach tunes that might appeal to the entire crowd. I've got some Buffett, Marley, and the required Otis Redding in my songbook already. Any other suggestions?

Toney - Whats popular on your pool side afternoon gigs?

Tubatooter - Would love some links (if you've got any) to some of the more adult appropriate fun songs that could be played later in the evenings. Email chords and lyrics if that's at all possible!

Thanks folks - all great ideas. Beach Boys - so obvious how could I have missed that? Will definitely add some to the songbook.  Thanks NELA - I'd heard Buffet's version of that, certainly easy enough.

Loved the vids TubaT - At Least Ya Done Me and S.P.O.R.E. especially - Also loved the Jello Shot tune - your gigs seem like a blast!

You've already got Marley down so I didn't list any of his... But any songs you usually play would work for the beach. Especially if you carry the uke smile I've found that If you transcribe to G most songs cross over very well to the uke... G just seems to fit it better IMO

These are after the kids are tucked in songs.The Rodeo Song is here on chordie,I don't know about Boys from Oklahoma.
The Rodeo Song takes some practice singing,it has some fast tongue tieing lyrics ,so you have to do it before getting too messed up.

Two of the most requested beach tunes here on the Gulf Coast are "Margaritaville" and "Cheeseburger in Paradise" - both by Jimmy Buffet and are available on YouTube.
Local players cringe when they are requested to play these two tunes but they be whatchacall "money music" 'round here.
"Sweet Home Alabama" is a can't miss hit and is now imprinted on our license plates as well as in our hearts.

Pix - Really dug that Sublime tune - I gotta switch the radio off classic rock and am talk radio sometimes and try some newer stuff. Very Cool. And man, I love all of your wife's videos (gotta take a cold shower now). Check bradintampa's version - that's how I learned it. All his stuff is good.

Wayne - Wow - loved the tunes, didn't expect that from you LOL. I'm afraid that by the time came that it would be appropriate, I'll have way to much in me to keep up with vocals. LOL - great stuff though.

Tuba - I lived in Florida for 10+ years, been to Key West many times - I feel for every bar band when they are requested to play cheesburger or margaritiville. I know Toney feels the same way (and Jimmy too more than likely). That said, my younger cousins from upstate NY will probably be just like your typical tourist and those tunes will likely go over well. Easy enough, I'll print them, then burn 'em on the last day.

That's a tough question to answer accurately, but I'll give it a shot....

Buffett is sometimes really good but other times it invokes mental internal vomit. Too much of a good thing is sometimes not good.

Bob Marley is almost always good unless "that guy" is there buzz-killing all within his earshot because the musician " doesn't sound anything like the record."

Pretty much any tune that is up-beat and mentions sunshine, the ocean, fishing, boating, dancing( horizontal or vertical), chuggin' down booze, or checkin' out babes, will be a hit.

Jack Johnson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Ben Harper, Green Day, Neil Young,Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, and Johnny Cash seem to have consistent crossover appeal to multi-aged demographics.

My best advice to you would be this; be prepared with a big ole fat songbook filled with songs that you absolutely love to play. Introduce yourself and ask the folks listening to you what they would like to hear. Get 4 or 5 suggestions, play those tunes, then do it again, and again, and again............Oh yeah, and make sure your TIP JAR is located in a good spot. ( right in front of you,very colorful, at least 2' off of the ground)

Actually Tops, I'll be really close to you on the last couple days of your vacation. A few friends and I take an annual fishing trip to Chocowinity on the Pamlico river at that time. A little place called Blunts Creek fish Camp. I've been working on the boat this past week in prep for it. Don't know if I can get by or not though... I could possibly take the boat across the sound...maybe, for a short visit. It's only about a 3-4 hr. boat ride from were we camp to Hatteras if I rock it. Have to see how things work out... We'll be there from the 17th to the 21st. Glad you enjoyed the tunes! -Pix
