Topic: chicken picking: worth learning??

hey all, i've been playing for about a year and a half and i've got the basics down, and i'm learning some alternative stuff, like finger picking and alternative chord shapes, and my instructor introduced me to chicken picking, when you use your fingers and a pick.  i was wondering how many songs actually use this technique, and if it's worth perfecting. thanks,

Re: chicken picking: worth learning??

I've never heard of chicken picking...I've done it, but never heard that term...it works ok, but you may as well just do it all with a pick...

Re: chicken picking: worth learning??

What do you exactly mean with chcken picking.I can play at least 40-50 chords, knowing that there are about 100x more chords.

I just can say that I learned a lot trying to follow CD songs, and I have now the little Korg Pandora, wich allows you if you play alone, to try guitar loops, so my play is really improving, because you have (limited) drum- and bassloops. Tried fingerpicking, but I think I am to lazy to learn picking, especially because, if you play for 25 years, it is very hard to change habits. I pick my strings with a plectrum, and very slowly, I even try to play without. That is why that technique is fascinating.

If you're going to play country, you'll need it, and it can add a lot to other genres of music as well.  Anytime you can learn a new technique, grab it.  To hear some chicken pickin', listen to Jerry Reed, Danny Gatton, maybe some Brad Paisley.  Look for great guitarists who play country, and you'll get the idea.
