Topic: My dog hates Opera

Actually, I think it's the tamborine that she really hates not the Opera.  But... maybe there's something to it since I know a lot of people that hate opera and will bark like dogs if they have to listen to it for very long!

I was looking into some of the music I used to sing... cuz well, I can't play piano (other than a little plunking of one line here and there) and this stuff just can't be played on the guitar.  And here I come across the Black Swan from The Medium, a really sad misery kind of song and the dog starts BARKING her head off.  She would not stop... running to the windows, the door, barking like mad!  I had to shut it off and she still kept huffing for a good 10 minutes after.  LOL!  I guess she will have to be shut in another room next time!

If you can handle it... this is the song:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_S3hVqfE9U  I absolutely ADORE it!  I can think of a few in Italian that I like to sing.  They also have an interesting storyline when the translation is done.  My mother always hated this one... and loved the others till she read the translations.  She liked it when I stuck to the more "pretty wonderful beautiful stuff" type of songs!

Re: My dog hates Opera

I sailed for two weeks with a neurosurgeon who's golden labrador came to love my guitar playing. That big dog would hop up on the seat next to me and keep snuggling up closer untill he jammed my right elbow in so tight to the guitar I could no longer play. I had to slide to my left to continue but sure enough, two or three songs later he was jam up again. I wonder if it was my playing or the hamburgers on my breath.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".
Ya'll wanna go down to the Guf?

Re: My dog hates Opera

SouthPaw, I hope you don't make the dog watch Oprah!  I'm a woman, and even I don't like Oprah much!  wink LOL!

Old Doll... BEAUTIFUL!  I never heard that Freddie Mercury one before... that was just... well... AWESOME!

Tuba, my dog is afraid of my guitar.  I think her previous owners hit her a lot with a lot of different items around the house... the guitar scares her a lot.  BUT... once I sit down and start playing, she usually comes up and cuddles at my feet.  I expect dogs must LOVE the sounds of acoustics with the gentle tunes they put out.  Of course, hamburger breath helps to get a dog to love you too!

This is one that I have always loved singing:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THTUCtExVbo
One that mom always liked... till she read the interpretation.  Pretty much the whole song can be summed up with, "Yes I love you... but I love other men too"!

Now I've been searching, and found one that I used to sing...Black is the Color...  lo and behold it's an old Scottish folk song... and TOTALLY different than the way I sang it with the piano arrangement.  Original form seems to be like this:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vxkc24F6uDw

I just looked it up in the songs/chords... YAY!  Now... how will I ever play a Bm or E7?  They both look difficult (2 versions).  I'm thinking I'll try the E7 version first!  But still... YAY!  A song to learn a new way that I might be able to play on the guitar!  I love Chordie!

Re: My dog hates Opera

Hey Amy,

You might want to transpose the song to Em and do all easy open chords if your not ready for barre chords.

Just a thought  smile

Re: My dog hates Opera

And such a simple thought too.  I was thinking, since they were all open chords except for the one (in each different version) that I wouldn't find anything easier if I transposed it... sadly, I don't know how to do all that yet (except for asking Chordie to do it for me) ... and alas... you were right!

Am, Dm, Em, F, G ... I can play those!!!  YAY again!  Is that the key of Em?  I really have got to make an attempt at learning some music theory!  I "get it" ... I just am like some little brat that doesn't want to learn it.  HA, my husband and I were just talking about that last night too.

Re: My dog hates Opera

And when folks ask you why did you transpose this song you can smile and say I play it this way to match my voice.
That sounds better than , dad burn it , I just can't play barre chords so I have to play it this way smile
