Topic: blocking of songs-who has the right to do this

As I understand it, this website is all about a bit of fun, being able to stumble through a few chord progressions for songs that you would like to play.
Suddenly there is a Big Brother element, particularly with Beatles songs. Music Sales UK say they have the rights to all Beatles song lyrics in the UK. How come I still get blocked when I live in Australia?
Additionally, there are people who request that certain songs be removed from the catalogue. What right do they have to do this?
What, if any, is there a chance to respond?
It seems to me that there are people that take this site far to seriously in legal and copyright terms.
All I can say to them is get a life and stop spoiling it for everyone else who just want a bit of fun.

Re: blocking of songs-who has the right to do this

Hi kj4257, unfortunately the copyright issue is one that won't go away. Since Chordie is a search engine which then displays song chords gathered from other sites it may still be possible to view them on the original sites. But copyright is a serious business and to protect this site it's felt that it's best to play safe and remove any songs from the index when requested to do so by the copyright holder. Better safe than see Chordie disappear.

Welcome to the forum, have a look around and please join in.

Cheers,

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

I have to agree with you kj, but it is a much deeper issue than that unfortunately.

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Welcome to Chordie KJ!  Yup and yup and yup to everything everyone has said.  It's the copyright holders throwing their weight around.  It stinks... but please feel free to jump in on some conversations here with other Chordians.  You'll find that many have some of the music which has been blocked and can help you out if there's something in particular you're looking for (via email not posted on the site... we can't post anything copyright ON the forums).  Check out the song requests section and join in some of our fun!  smile

Art and beauty are in the eyes of the beholder.
What constitutes excellent music is in the ears of the listener.

"(via email not posted on the site... we can't post anything copyright ON the forums)."

This is an issue that many forums are facing now. If one wants to use an article in some forums you must cite the article and the author with a link to the original article. Other forums will remove the article altogether and just post a link to the original site. If copyright laws are not followed the board owner can be sued.

From what I understand (sorry just word of mouth) there are copyright legal beagles trolling forums looking for violations so the original authors/writers can sue.
