Topic: Developing a KEY Indicator Window

Roger... I'm not a trained musician, so it's a mystery to me to know what key I'm in when I play a particular set of chords.  When I transpose chords to play a song in my voice range or, to simplify the chord set to match my ability, is there an indicator to show me what key I've changed to?  A function like this would be a nice learning tool for people, like me, who have no formal music training.     - Whatsuptut

Re: Developing a KEY Indicator Window

Hi Whatsuptut and welcome,

As a general rule of thumb whatever chord the piece starts and finishes on is usually the key.
The chords you play will also indicate the key to you.

The key of C will generaly contain: C, Am, F & G with possibly Dm & Em.
                D                              : D, Bm, G & A                    Em  & F#m.
                E                               : E, C#m, A & B                  F#m & G#m.
                F                               : F, Dm, Bb & C                  G#m & Am.
                G                              : D Em, C & D                     Am & Bm.
                A                               : A, F#m, D & E                 Bm & C#m.
                B                               : B, G#m, E & F#               C#m & D#m.

When singing a song the musicians must always play in the key to suit the singer. A singer cannot alter the range of his/her voice but instruments can easily be played in a different key. So always play in the key that suits your voice and use a capo if you have not the ability to play the chords of the key required.

I hope that helps.

A cool site to see chords and how they lay across your guitar neck.

We pronounce it "Guf Coast".
Ya'll wanna go down to the Guf?

Thanks, Roger.  Your answer is just what I needed.  I appreciate the link, too, Tubatooter; very neat!  I know I'll have more Q's down the road.
