Topic: new usb mic.

I purchased a Behringer c-1u usb condenser mic along with other equipment in hopes of making a music vidio. Installed the mic just as manual instructed, have green light but no sound. I set playback and recording tabs as indicated. Should i expect sound from my laptop speakers, running windows seven after plugging into a usb port and doing above.
I know dumb questions are not always popular but, I sure would like to solve this. Thanks guy's    b

Re: new usb mic.

You could try clicking on the little speaker tab on the bottom right of your desktop and open the mixer and see if the mic is on the list if it is the volume may have to be adjusted, other then that open your control panel and see if its listed in devices if it is you may have to designate it as the default microphone. smile

Re: new usb mic.

Thanks Russell and Pete, i have been through the volume mixer settings  for playback and record, before posting the question. I know i'm missing something because the mic is listed, under listing say's working, if i clap my hands sharply the,i guess, volume indicator will bounce. mixer from task bar is set at 100% but my voice does not come through speakers. grrrrrrrr.    b

Re: new usb mic.

The dumb answer, but I have to ask.  Is your mic switch on, if it has one.  The other thing is to call Berringer directly and they should talk you through it.

Re: new usb mic.

If I read this right you are expecting something that will not happen. A PC, or laptop, is not an amplifier so you cannot get sound direct from the mic to the speakers. But you should be able to use a programme like Audacity (free) to record and then playback.

If I have misunderstood your initial post then please accept my apology.

Re: new usb mic.

Your voice will come thru the speakers after recording try recording and then playback and see if it recorded. if the meter is showing input its working record then playback

Re: new usb mic.

I think Roger has the right answer.  The mic isn't going to do anything for you except transform your sound waves into something digital that can be understood by the computer.  That has to be software such as Audacity or Reaper.  You use that software to "monitor" your mics, and have the audio routed back to your speakers, which act as the monitors.

Here is where it is going to be hard if you plan on using something for live audio.   With any digital audio chain, you are going to have latency, and the more digital in the middle between your mic capsule and your speakers, the worse it will get.  This is primarily why I shy away from USB mics.  1st, you're getting whatever D/A technology they can cram into the mic, so even the finest microphones will suffer, but you're also going to get the latency from that conversion.  Then, you're going to have the latency of whatever software you're using (Audacity, Reaper, etc...).

If what you're doing is recording, then you'll probably be OK.   If you are using it as a live mic, where you are expecting your inputs to come out of the speakers in "real time," you may be frustrated with delay between when you play into the mic, and when you hear it come out of the speakers.

Re: new usb mic.

Thanks a lot for the help guys, Rodger you understood my post correctly, i did think i should get sound! that is the information i needed. I have since down loaded and installed Audacity, now, if i can figure out  how to use it i think i will be allright. The mic does not have a switch Pete but, when i saw your post i had to look. Jerome your post was very helpful also, I'm just going to record for now, and if i decide to have live sound i will use one of my dynamic mics into my mixer. I hope someday to be able to help others as you guys are helping me, it is very very much appreciated.     b

in audacity you will need to look in the box by the mic and make shure you have it selected correctly, along with your inputs for either stereo or mono   http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/i … indows.png  Have you  read this?  http://manual.audacityteam.org/o/   for how to set up and use? its worth the time to read it, helped me a lot.  Not a hard program to bungle through.  I have a Berhinger condensor mic run into my berhinger 8 channel mixer on the phantom power and into the sound card.

good luck and feel free to e-mail me if I can help more.

Re: new usb mic.

Bob,

You may have to go to Control Panel on your computer and go to Manage Devices, then go to Sound, then you will see the speakers you are using and next to it on top it will say Recording and you can choose your Mic.

Re: new usb mic.

This may sound stupid, but check your system and make sure the sound card you have installed is capable of recording real vocal or instruments. I found out too late that my sound card would not allow for recording my voice or guitar onto my laptop..
