Topic: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Hey Friends

It's your old half-song writing buddy, me!

When our friend Mazzy did her song "Broken" for us on SoundCloud, our friend Grah1 ("Gray'one" - finally GOT it smile ) did his own version and called it Broken Cover, as in a cover of Mazzy's tune.

But I, as I usually do, saw it and read it differently, so here's the beginnings/snatches of a tune as seen through the eyes of a 15 year old high school kid.

==================================================

Broken Cover

I try and try just to stay out of her way

But today she saw me and I didn't know what to say

She's so pretty and oh so cool

But she's 17 and almost out of school

And here I'll be just a   15 year old guy

Afraid to tell her that I love her and afraid to even try

CHORUS:
I gotta break my cover! Can't let her get away

Break my cover! But I don't know what to say

I'm a loner and I'm lonely and I'll always be that way

If I don't break break my cover!

Today I saw her and I tried to walk up close

But Jimmy saw her first,  and man that really blows

I saw she caught my eye and then gave me a smile

For a smile like that I'd run a hundred miles.

This afternoon I saw her

Chorus:
I'm glad I broke my cover

So that's the end chorus up there: (I'm glad I......)

====================================================

and that's where my mind has stopped or my meds are failing me, I don't know which. Care to help me out? As always, you'l get co-writing credit. Can't take it with ya', right?

Thanks for any help

Your Pal

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Okay, I finished it myself, y'all! smile Here's the finished product and I appreciate your faith in me that I can get something done.

Here is:

                                                                                      Broken Cover
                                                                                         Bill Craig
                                                                                           9/16/15

===========================

I try and I try just to stay out of her way

But today she saw me and I didn't know what to say

She's so pretty and oh so cool

But she's 17 and almost out of school

And here I'll be just a   15 year old guy

Afraid to tell her and afraid to even try

CHORUS:
I gotta break --- my cover! Can't let her get away

Break--- my cover! But I don't know what to say

I'm a loner and I'm lonely and I'll always be that way

If I don't break break --- my cover!

Today I saw her and I tried to walk up close

But Jimmy saw her first,  and man that really blows

I saw she caught my eye and then gave me a smile

For a smile like that I'd run a hundred miles.

Then this afternoon I saw her, practicing her cheers

I decided that I'd do it, to hell with all my fears

SILENCE:::::::::::::

(drum roll):spoken: Curiously she watched as I cautiously approached

Am I some kinda stalker, am I some kinda roach?

"No", she decided as she slowly walked my way

'Why did you wait so long?", she asked.

"Please don't walk away?"

Chorus:
I'm glad I broke my cover, I broke it just today

The girl of my dreams will never walk away

I broke -- my cover, and you can do it too

Bre-aak your cover, let your love come shining through.

Finish with repeat chorus........

==============================================

Please correct and thanks for considering this and thanks also, Graham and Mazzie!

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Thanks, Mazzie

This reprresents a total of ONE song I have written and finished in several years, and who do I credit for it?

THE CHORDIANS!!!!!!

That means you and everyone else who can churn 'em out the way I wish I could.

Thanks so much!

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

97 views and only one comment? Oof! Come on, y'all can do better than that. Crtique, critique and critique friends and neighbors! It's only that way that I'll get better.

Yeah, I know it's a bit sophomoric, but it also happens to be a  true story. smile

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

I have a comment Bill since there are no chords it is a poem and you should have posted in that forum.

"Growing old is not for sissies"

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Yikes! You are correct, sir. Can you move it for me, please, Russell? Apologies and thank you, Sir. smile

Bill

PS: I'l work up some chords later. wink

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

As Russell says as there is no chords then it's a poem.
Until music is added.
It just makes things more ordered.
So off to poems you go

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Could  be  a  rocker  this  one Bill ,Is that  the  way   you  envisage  it ?

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Yes, Gray One, I do and thanks for your comment today and the idea it gave me 2 nights ago. I thought to myself, Graham, you've done it this time, and inside of a couple of hours I had it done.

As I told Mazzy, I haven't done that in years, so I owe you both a great big THANK YOU! smile

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Cant  wait  to  hear   it  Bill  I'd give  it  a  shot at  putting a  tune  to it  but  Ive  got   the  Pickering  Beer  festival  to  play  at  and  two  gigs   for  the  we shall overcome  events  and  then I  think  were   back  to  Greece  for  a  few  weeks to tie  up  the  loose  ends  there .So  realistically it  will  be  mid November  before  I  have  any  spare  time.

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

I need to get back into it anyway, Graham. Let me work on it and maybe you can take a look at my chords and see what else you can help me with when you come back and have time. Would that be okay, I hope?

Safe Journey, Gray One. wink

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Still haven't had time to work on this one. Those of you who know me and my recent problems will know why, but I could sure still use some help. The chords can be as simple as EAD (and yes, even the dreaded Bflat).

As stated earlier it's based on Graham's titel of a song he covered by our mazzie called "Broken" - a fine tune in its own right. Anyway, he referred to it as as "Broken" Cover. Hence the title to this little tune about a 15 year-old (me) and his 17 year-old (unrequited?) love: "Broken Cover".

I'm just so buzzed about this one because it's the first poem/tune/lyrics I have ever really finished* and I'm giving all the credit to my chordie friends for their encouragement.

It was all done in one night, as well.

Thanks for any help!

Bill

PS: With the exception of "If Sunshine Were Mine......", which I suppose we can call "finished" by me, but there were so many of you who added to it which made it even better, so I'm not taking all the credit - we're sharing it: Comprende? wink

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

I sort of get it as a ballard using, A. C#m. D. Unfortunately it starts to sound a bit like The Weight.  But its my first run through.

Thick as two short planks

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Thanks, Bryan. Whatever you and the others can put together would be most appreciated. I was thinking of it as more of a rocker (to quote "The Gray One"), but you guys are better at this stuff than I have ever been. I just keep the beat and strum rhythm every now and then.

That and be a fan of yours and everyone else here who has the talent to pull out the memories and tear at the heart-strings! smile

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Hello William,

How the devil did I miss this one. Oh yes September I was on holiday.

I loved it, we have all been there. A true story; I met Ann, the wife, when we were both 16 but I thought she was out of my league, so I didn't persue her. We met again at age 30 fell in love (again for me) and married, and stayed that way for 35 years come may 9 next year. I had all the fantasies that teenage boy's get and we both had failed marriages.

I hope your story worked out for you or you got over it. It's early morning here so I can't try it out so I'll give it a go later. Let you know how I get on.

Your friend

Phill

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: "Broken Cover" Based On Graham's Phrase

Nice work, Bill ... tells a great story, and there's some deep feelings beneath it all. Love it!
