Topic: The Qualities of Epiphones?

I love epiphones and the qualty they have but i want to know what everyone else thinks of them

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

I think they are a great guitars. I recently purchased the epi acous/elec PR5E and I love it! I really like the action on most epi acoustics, they tend to be pretty easy on your fingers. epi SG's are pretty nice too, although epiphone electrics are outdone by gibson hands down. but , hey for the price they're pretty good guitars as far as I'm concerned.

If you spend your life judging people, how will you ever have time to love them ♥

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

There are nice some nice Epi's & some dogs that I've seen and done set ups & repairs. I of the M.I.K's (short for the made in Korea's) I like the Michael Kelly's.  The pick ups are of better quality than the Epi's (they use Rockfield's in the models I prefer.

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

I have an Epiphone Viola bass.

It sounds great for re-creating the sixties sound, and because it's hollow bodied you can practice without plugging in.

My son also likes the sound of it, and he's a Guns 'n' Roses fan !

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

Sell your house (or your soul to the devil), You know you have to have that guitar!

I'm glad you liked it, I wouldn't be without mine, pity I had to send my son down a coal mine to get it.

cheers

David

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

Hi. I got a epipgone sg, im not very good at guitar but i love my sg so faar smile

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

I bought a masterbuilt, aj500rns in january. i put my martin dm in the case, and haven't taken it out.  the epi gives me deep, rich warm lows, and bright , clear highs.  i love this guitar.  still, my '45 gibson j45 has a sweeter sound -- but i don't play it much either.  I got a really great deal.  musician's friend advertised it as a discounted "blem" model.  it came through perfect -- not a scratch -- for a SMALL fraction of the cost of a new gibson, and seems to stand right alongside the newer gibsins as far as quality.  I originally was under the impression that epiphone made cheaper, lower quality guitars.  boy was i wrong.

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

I have a Epi LP custom and a SheratonII...love them both...even more after a good set up...

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

I've had a PR5E/ VS for 25 yrs and have only had it set up once.
It stays in tune for weeks.
I've since got a Takamine Jasmaine which has better sound.
I now have a guestion about the XLR/Phono Output jack though.
See my post XLR Jack.

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

I have an Epiphone SG and I love it.
There is a cheaper version of the SG that doesn't look like it's as nice.

The Gibson SG is better, but the Epiphone is easier on the budget.

I believe Gibson makes Epiphone.  Is that correct?

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

I don't know about newer ones, but my dad's 30 year old epi acoustic has an awesome sound even after all these years.

Aren't guitars supposed to sound better with age?

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

I have an older Epiphone Sheraton, can it be possible that this guitar has a feedback problem?
I use now a Marshall Acoustic Amp, and there is no problem, even using effects.
In a guitar shop, I tried a few Epi's, all SG models, the BEST sounding was the cheapest, EPIPHONE SG CLASSICAL

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

Gibson makes them, but they aren't Gibsons.  They're nice guitar.  But I could have bought three Dots for what I would have paid for a genuine ES-335.

And honestly, I'm not that good, anyway.  But the Dot is lovely.  big_smile

Someday we'll win this thing...

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

Hi Folks, I just joined Chordie although I've been plundering their collection of songs for a while.  In the not too distant future I will be buying myself a new accoustic guitar (I currently own an Ovation Applause and an EKO Ranger 12) and all the Epiphones that I've played have always felt good.  The music I gravitate towards is accoustic rock, folk and bluegrass and I will have around £500 to spend.  Notwithstanding the fact that all guitar purchases are intensely personal, can anyone advise me which model I should be considering.  Cheers  John Shaw

Like guitar players I guess. Not always true though!

There is no such thing as a 'wrong note'. There are merely notes played in the wrong place.
I should know.. I get them out of order all the time!

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

Hi Tibernius / Last_rebel / John

Thanks for the prompt response and yes, I understand that older guitars can offer fantastic value but if like me you are of limited knowledge, plumping for a second-hand guitar can also result in being left holding a complete donkey and I'm afraid that I don't have enough experience of buying guitars to prevent this happening.  I will in all probability buy a new one and enjoy it as it matures with me (I am only 47 after all!!).

I admire you posting yourself playing on You Tube, very brave.  I can just about muster the courage to do a couple of songs at my local folk club.  I'll check out your playing later on.

Cheers

John Shaw

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

John,

You mnentioned second hand guitars and limited knowledge, whats to stop you from taking a friend to help you check out some used guitars? You could stumble on to a jem.

Bootlegger.

Re: The Qualities of Epiphones?

Thanks Bootlegger

Don't know why but this really hadn't occurred to me and I do indeed have a couple of very experienced friends whom I could ask.

Cheers

John
