Topic: Hendrix, what do you think?

I had to cross post this because you may not have looked at paranormalguitar's thread on Van Halen.

Hendrix, "not really very good actually"

Which 'shit for brains' wrote that ?

That's like saying "Einstein, sort of understood a bit of physics, but over estimated himself".
or
"Pele, kicked a ball around but didn't quite get the point of soccer"
or
"Nelson Mandela, read a few things about politics and racial discrimination and had a go at sorting things out in South Africa"

I'm just off for a cold shower ...

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

We, as guitarist today, would still be in the dark ages if it wasnt for guys like Hendrix

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

Hendrix was a guitar god, not only could he play but it came through him not the guitar. His guitar was a means to an end!
There is a reason Stevie Ray Vagn was obsessed with Hendrix.

Quotes like that just show how narrow minded people can be.

On another note I believe that paranormalguitar just likes to provoke people. He has shown us who he is, it's up to us to believe him. I believe that he is a smart kid who should learn to express himself in a more diplomatic way. We have all been young and brash, with time he will grow up.

I may be goin' to hell in a bucket babe

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

Just got back from a 12 k run, happily trodding along to a playlist of my 5 fav Jimi tracks.

Maybe to some music theory enthusiast, some "Hendrixism" and his use of guitar effects appear somewhat simplistic.  I'm not competent enough to really say something about his musical finesse...

...but fact is, his music f***ing jams!!!
That's about all you need to know as a listener, as long as you get some form of enjoyment out the tunes, it's great music.
Now, if you consider the vast number of Jimi fans, how his tunes keep reappearing, are being instantly recognized and how many of his tracks are considered "classic", everyone has to agree that he was a brilliant ARTIST.

I'm going to grab my guitar right now and give Little Wing another shot ...

I didn't mean to have a go at paranormalguitar, he was only quoting someone else, it was the original author that I'm pissed off at. smile

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

One can not deny that Hendrix opened up a whole new chapter on the possibilities of what could be done on a guitar. I told this story once before on chordie, here it is again. Whe Hendrix first hit the sene in England Eric Clapton and Pete Townsand went to see him play. After the show they were bummed out believing they would no longer have work playing guitar

what a long strange trip it's been

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

Eric Clapton said in an interview that after the isle of white festival just before Jimmy died that he and Jimmy had plans to either jam or actually do something together, He was saddened he never.

also while on the subject of Mr Hendrix.
In March 1992 ( i tihnk, or 1991) I thought Jimmy hendrix was alive.
I was well blootered out my face at the red hot chili peppers gig in the glasgow barrowlands ( before they became very comercialised). I cannot remember most of the gig but I do remember hearing their last song, or one of their encores "cross town traffic". Taht made me jump up and shout JIMMY!!!!. then I realised I was not at a jimmy hendrix gig after all.
thats about all I remember of the gig. I dont even remember if it was a good version or not, lol.

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

If Red Hot Chili Peppers played the version, then you've got a 50/50 shot of it being "good."  I like about half of their stuff as a listener.  As a quasi-musician-wannabe, I appreciate their skill and innovation all the time.  But as a listener, about half is good.

Now Jimi - flat out innovator.  He broke every rule and made up new ones.  Some of the tones he coaxed out of his instrument don't appeal to my ear, but to say that he wasn't an exceptional musician, innovator, showman, and artist is not giving him due credit.

shouldn't we all be allowed our own likes and dislikes? Hendrix was a dam good guitarist but personaly I never really liked his stuff. I prefer eric clapton.
Oh and ...leave Madiba and south africa out of your guitar bickerings.

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

Who is Madiba ?

And why is South Africa off limits ?

cheers

YEBO! nadine2 I couldn't agree more. People that are so eager to stomp on other peoples opinion lack imagination and are bound for ever to follow like sheep. I have very little musical learning but I know what I like...and Hendrix it aint. I think Santana is great.
Hey, paranormal...do you know any haunting airs...?...Any of your personalities are welcome to answer.

Hey David,
Madiba IS Nelson Mandela. It's what we call him. South Africa is not off limits, I personaly just found the remark offensive.

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

Madiba...good guy. Not much of a Hendrix fan though!

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

I used to think Jimi Hendrix was a one dimensional player - all aimlesss widdling but then one day I listened to him carefully. How wrong  those first impressions were. yes there's extended soloing but also expressive playing and melody, from little wing to purple haze, the variation is vast.

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

Nadine

I'm sorry if I offended you, but I can't see why it was offensive, I Know that irony sometimes doesn't work and obviously this time I failed.

Nelson Mandela is one of my all time heroes, ( I'm looking at his picture now alongside Mother Theresa on my laptop wallpaper) and that's why I chose his name.

I was trying to compare him to Hendrix, another personal hero.
Whether you like Hendrix or not isn't important, he is just a guy that you cannot dismiss rather like Mandela.

please accept my apologies

hey David,
Thanx, but no real harm done. I do actually understand irony...even on my blonde days!  It just seemed as if you were making light of all he did for us a country and people, but I can see now you're actually sincere. But hey, this is a place for music not politics, so let's just rock on. I went and listened to some Hendrix now and he was an extraordinary artist. wasn't he? Maybe not everyones cup of tea (certainly not mine) but undeniably he had a passion for his music.

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

You're absolutely correct Nadine.

I'll restrict my political outpourings to bebo.

By the way, join bebo and be my friend, it can't hurt!

You are correct about my sincerity, Madiba as you call him really is one of my all time heroes and that's why I suppose he springs to mind when I'm looking for an example of a man who really matters.

As a side issue, did you ever hear "Free Nelson Mandela" by The special A.K.A, that song opened a few eyes and hearts in the UK. when Nelson was still incarcerated.

sincerely (I don't take the piss 24/7)

David

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

Hey David,
I just might do that. I actually met him when I was still in school a few years back. He was released in my final year and I was still a member of the national youth orchestra. We played at a function for him and he took the time to come and say howzit to us. As I had just won a prestigious music scholorship he chatted to me for almost 30mins about music.  It was cool, to say the least.

and hey, I'd rather be pissed off than pissed on!

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

Nadine, I am truly humbled.

To meet that guy would have lit a light in my life, you probably do realize how lucky you are, but I'll say it anyway, you are way cool and I mean that with the greatest respect.

stay chilled

David

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

I am on bebo. Just joined, actually! Decided to see what all the fuss is about. I think I'm either nadine b or stringchick...squeezebox was taken. Can't remember my name though. And ur pretty cool yourself. Hell we'd better stop complimenting each other be4 one of us believes it!
Cheers.

Re: Hendrix, what do you think?

Thanks Nadine,

I really need to go and  sleep now (I'm so old and knackered)

I'm useless at setting up friends on bebo, I had to wait for Ken (upyerkilt) to sort it out last time, but I will try.
See you tomorrow and thanks for speaking to me, You have a very forgiving personality, and I appreciate that.

keep the faith

David
