Topic: Greed

This woke me this morning at 7 am and disturbed me so much I couldn't get back to sleep.

Greed.          By Phill Williams.

I gaze around me
Vistas far
My problems fade
Others more disturbing
Living with fear
Fear of death
Fear of life without limb
Fear of losing ones country
Ones home to oligarchs
To billionaires greed
Their lives decided behind closed doors
Their future undecided by themselves
The poor and peasants tolerated for...
One reason, you'll agree
To fight and die in their “Trojan” wars
Sacrifice their lives to enrich the richest
There can be but one victor in each side
The oligarchs vs the billionaires
But where are they when the bullets and bombs
The dead and the infirmed are laid to rest?
Hiding five miles down, safe and sound
All the money and the gold in all the world
But who will they govern when the ashes are scattered?
What can they buy when High Streets are laid low?
What have they gained by Killing the world?
Nothing!
But that's GREED

Re: Greed

Wow Piri, this is one very profound poem about greed and its impact on different social strata. Your words encapsulates perfectly  the harsh truth that when conflicts emerge, it is often those lacking financial security and social capital who bear the brunt of the violence. You have encompassed with your words the unjust consequences of war perfectly. When the wealthy factions of society decide to engage in conflict, be it for political, economic, or personal gain, the burden of that choice always falls disproportionately on the most vulnerable members of society. The poor, who lack the financial means to evade the consequences of warfare or secure their safety, become the tragic casualties of the battles fought by the affluent. Through my extensive reading due to having too much time, on my hands, I came to realise it is a long-standing historical reality, where the privileged few, with their resources and power, have often shaped the course of warfare. They make decisions regarding conflicts that directly impact the poor, who are left with little choice but to bear the weight of their decisions, both on the battlefield and in the aftermath of destruction. The  leaders in history who I admire had the strength and courage are the ones who guided their people into battle by being there and leading them. Their sense of honour, despite the harsh realities, is a testament to their character. In recent history most  leaders  are in safe places away from the harm of war and benefiting financially of others suffering. That is a great question we all should be asking our world leaders in your poem. " What have they gained by Killing the world?"

Re: Greed

Big thanks to my Kiwi mates. I'm not totally against the rich and powerful if they got that position by their own work and diligence. What I hate are the ones that achieve  power and riches by treading over more conscientious people. I am a great believer in Britain's  royal family, with certain omissions, so Trumps ridicule of commonwealth armed forces and King Charles visit ( which I would cancel) only goes to show Americans how wonderful he is...NOT. I want the visit cancelled, and comem to that the world cup not that I'm a football fan!
