Topic: Question for music theory guys

Quick question guys ... one thing I see alot is when a song is played, they'll say this song is played in the key of "A, B, C, D, etc" ... what does that mean?  How does it apply to where your playing the chords, notes, etc?

Is it safe to assume that if they're playing in the key of "A" that they're playing the scales or notes associated with the key of "A" on all of the strings?

That's a good assumption.

If something is in the key of A, then you should (generally) be able to play all the notes in that scale, and all the chords that contain those notes and be alright over the song.

Start by learning scale patterns.  They apply everywhere on the neck.  The same five patterns can be used to play every major scale.

I'm pretty sure the key of c has the notes C,D,E,F,G,A,B,C all natural.
Key of d is D,E,F#,G,A,B,C
Key of E is E,F#,G#,A,B,C#,D#,and E.

One sharp is G major, or one if it's modes.  What you have below is D myxolidian mode, which is derived from G major.

Key of d is D,E,F#,G,A,B,C

D major has two sharps, F# and C#
