Topic: Percussion instruments used with Looping

A few of you good people out there have expressed interest in Looping.
Here are most of the fun perscussion tools I use often with my Boss RC 20-XL Loop Pedal;

That's about all, I'm constantly looking for additions to brighten up and enhance my loops. As you can see, many of these items are relatively inexpensive. I try to mix up the different cominations each night with a few constants. I use my djembe, cabasa(chained shaker) and egg shakers to emulate snare and toms( top of djembe) bass drum (bottom of djembe) cabasa (high-hat) and egg shakers(ride cymbal).Also, I try to travel light and keep the items I usesmall enough to fit inside of my travel cases. I purchased 2 military field cases(2'x2'x4') to carry my gear. The cases work great and are sturdy as anything made specifically for carrying equipment. The best thing was the price. I got them for about 1/4 of a comprable 'music' case from a music store.

Re: Percussion instruments used with Looping

Hey Southpaw, This is a goldmine! Some of this stuff I haven't seen before and will have to acquire. I've never considered looping... But know that I think about it, it would be perfect for me. I do play with a band but we don't cover allot of my musical interest. I'm more or less just doing it for the experience and friends. I'd really like to develop my own music but it's hard to get someone to sit down and understand what sound I want or even to find people willing to help with backing of my own recordings. I do more singer songwriter type stuff any way and only need mild backgrounds going. I think I'll give this a shot. I may have some questions for you soon though...lol Thanks for posting this! Peace!  -Chris

If your brain is part of the process, you're missing it. You should play like a drowning man, struggling to reach shore. If you can trap that feeling, then you have something.
         Peace of mind. That's my piece of mind...

Fire away when ready. I'm ready and eager to help in any way I can. My mission is to rid the universe of drum machines and bring the human element back into music. Glad this info was helpful for you.

Re: Percussion instruments used with Looping

southpaw if you only play the preset patterns i have to agree with you but with my aleses I dont use the presets I play the pads manualy and keep the human element,all the pads sound like a drum kit and you can adjust each pad for tone,duration,decay and it shows up for the gig all the time lol

No pad on a machine can produce the sound, texture, and authenticity of real drums, be it a kit or percussion instruments. Drum machines need to go away, far, far, away from musicians who care about the quality of their product.

I have to admit though I do like one sound a drum machine makes. The sound of it hitting concrete after 130' drop from the top of a building.(Muse Hall @ Radford University) I actually did this and recorded the sound upon impact. Very cool sounds!!! Why all this hatred for drum machines you may ask? One of my best friends growing up was a drummer, as was his father, and his father too. Melodies enter the human body through the ears, drums and percussion enter the human body through the chest, going directly to the soul. No substitutes for this musician...............

Re: Percussion instruments used with Looping

Are all these percussion effects in the effects pedal? or do you actually play them physically and pack them into your case?

Re: Percussion instruments used with Looping

our drummer has electronic drums mixed in with his regular kit.  They sound great when used just sometimes.

These are not percussion effects, they are the real thing. Actual percussion instruments. I do play them with my own 2 hands and pack 'em away at the end of the gig. Here's an example  of what I do. It's not me, it's Keller Williams, but my philosophy to live perfoming is similar to his;

Hey Southpaw I know you were answering Russ here and I'm not experienced enough to pass any sort of preference on the topic.

Re: Percussion instruments used with Looping

I understand a little more and the looping is fine but can you play a progression as a loop and add the percussion in much the same way or is looping constrained to one chord it was a very nice video by the way I would like to add I have looping on my br-8 that is identical to what the video shows and I can add notes or voices even rhythm but I have never found a use for them until now so thanks for the looksee

Thanks arkady, glad you liked the information.

Russell,
I have no earthly idea what you said/or were asking in your last post. Sorry bro.

Re: Percussion instruments used with Looping

I only meant can you play a progression or are you limited to one chord to build on

Here's some product information. The specs describe in great detail what can be done with each pedal.

Re: Percussion instruments used with Looping

This looks like it would take a little time (like anything new) to feel comfortable useing lt seems to have a lot of potential but the price tag is a little steep or maybe ive been out of the loop for a while (pun intended) I only seen one video and no chord changes were involved i enjoyed the music and the musician played very well I would like to see videos with expanded chord structures a (full progression) it would seem you would have to somehow stack each loop into three or more separate loops to make a progression of loops into a song i wonder if this can be done in a live performance im only speculating so you will have to be a little patient i know zip about this so my questions are all on a basic level

OK
Click on the video link(bottom left hand corner in grey and white), if it doesn't go directly to it. There's a Boss employee demonstrating the pedal and all of it's usages. I turn the internal drum presets all of the way down when I use mine. I take great pride in using only sounds that I create on stage. Almost all of the working musicians in my area use some sort of backing tracks. I prefer to be different and do it all live, in real time. You should be 100% clear on the looping process after watching this link..............
