Topic: recording software and computer

hey guys I need some help I want to try to record some stuff to see how the lead and rythme goes together but my computers microphone does not work  and I dont know what soft ware I should get. Can anyone help me?

Hi snirp88,
You can get very good recording software for free by Googling up 'Audacity'.  There are Windows and Mac versions.  Audacity allows you to record multiple tracks, mix, and use effects.  It has many of other features.

For a microphone, I have a USB mic that plugs directly into my computer.  I use a Snowball by a company called Blue.  It costs about $100 US.  It has 3 settings; cardioid, condenser, & mixed.  It works very well for recording music.

'Regular' USB mics can be bought for $20 or so - but they are designed just for spoken voice and do not work quite as well for recording music.

the audacity program is the way to go, as far as how to get it into your pc to use this program your going to need some kind of recorder with left and right rca outputs and a chord that has 2 rca jacks on one end an a single sterio plug on the other that plugs into your pc mic input you have the option of recording all the tracks and mixing them in the recorder and feeding this into the audacity program and it will convert it to a mp3 file or you can send 1 track at a time and use the audacity program to mix i prefer mixing it first and sending it to audacity it arrives as a sterio recording and final editing can be done lile fade in or fade out equalize compress ect....

Hello again snirp88,
Russell's suggestions are OK, but you can do what you want to do without the recorder, cords, jacks, etc.

With a good USB mic that plugs straight into your computer you can bypass all that gear and just record tracks straight into Audacity.
