Topic: NCD :)

I've been shopping around for a new canoe for a few months now and with the Chordie gathering right around the corner, I had an excuse to splurge a little... Went to BassPro this evening and picked up a Old Town Saranac 146XT canoe smile  Now I can recline while floating down the river wink

Don't think the wife's too happy about me moving the couch and love seat out of the living room tonight to make room for it though...lol Got to clean out some room in the building for it tomorrow...

Re: NCD :)

We've had a little rain today so hopefully I can float it some Sunday....  Most of the closest river was only a few inches deep week before last when I paddled down it... Paddle, drag, paddle, drag  lol  Atleast the fishing was great!

A few from the camping/paddling trip.

YOWZER - Look at that cat!

Nice looking boat.  It'll be perfect for the Shenandoah.  There's an outfitter directly across the river from the campground that will run shuttles for you for $20.

Re: NCD :)

Thanks Zurf!   Fixing to Google map the area now and get a lay of the land....

Fought that cat for about 30 minutes.... Had to ease him in on 10lb line and he was about 40lbs. He straight pulled drag for the first few and then I thought I'd lost him cause he just set on the bottom and I couldn't budge him an inch. Just knew He had me wrapped! He was finally beached though. Was fishing with a hand size bluegill for bait, set about 2 ft off the bottom... (That's a friend of mine holding it up so I could get a better pic) The Largemouth were biting really good to but I'll have to get my buddy to send me some pics of those.

Re: NCD :)

I have never in my wildest dreams imagined a 40 pound catfish!  HOLY COW!  That is amazing, but more amazing is the fact that you were able to catch him on a 10lb line!  I once caught a 12 pound carp by the tail on a 10lb line (in fact, using a kiddie zebco... of course I was 10 years old) and THAT was quite an experience.  I am just in awe at that fish you have.  Nice canoe too!

It's just a baby smile  I pull them out of Cape Fear river around 60-70 lbs fairly often and almost never fish with anything over 14lb test. It's packed with real nice blues and flatheads and they love about a 18 inch live eel or the head half of a big cut shad. I've spent many years mapping out that river bottom with sonar to find good spots though...

Light lines makes it sooo much more fun smile This was from the Lumber and it's a decent size for there. The biggest I've pulled out of it is only about 50 lbs.

Noodlin' cats is also a lot of fun if you have the nerve for it!

I believe NELA has caught some in the 80lb range if I remember right...  I've never broke the 80lb mark myself though sad

Re: NCD :)

I guess it's pretty obvious that I've never fished in a river.  LOL!  The biggest catfish I've ever seen weren't much bigger than that 12lb carp I was talking about (although I'll bet they weighed a little bit more).  My daddy always took me out in a rowboat on Oneida Lake.  I've heard rumers that there's some pretty large sturgin in there, although I'm not so sure about that.  I haven't fished since I was under 16 though, my husband prefers to fish the streams around with the kids.  They're usually lucky if they catch a few sunnies!

Re: NCD :)

Nice canoe Pix. Believe it or not but guys around here make those from wood and put motors up to a 25 hp on them. They are mainly used in the river when its up enough to keep the bottom from dragging. The catfish is a nice one too but I'll take a stringer full if bream over one any day. Thanks for sharing.

Re: NCD :)

I know CHORDIE is a sight for music lovers but I am enjoying this thread esp. the pics. Looks like two nice catches. The boat and the fish. I've done very little fishing.(No patience) If I caught something bigger than my hand I wouldn't know how to act.

Re: NCD :)

My son and I carried the canoe out for a test paddle yesterday and it did great! Paddled easily , tracked good, and still had decent maneuverability.  Believe it or not, my wife had never been in a canoe before so we went out this morning to give her a little practice before next weekends Chordie meet. She picked it up real quick and we paddled about 3 miles up river before floating back to the Jeep.  Water is still really low!! Lowest I can ever remember seeing this river!  Snapped a few quick pics to share...

This really shows how low it is right now! You can clearly see the water line on the Cypress trees and the overhanging tree to the left is usually on/in the water! And we've had a good 3 inches of rain in the past week so it was a lot lower....
