Topic: Looking for songs...beginner

Anyone have a suggestion on some songs that use only the basic beginner cords i.e. G C D?   I have practiced switching and strumming these cords and a few others and would like to start learning a few songs just to keep me interested.

Any ideas?   Thanks in advance.

Ya'll wanna go down to the Guf?

Re: Looking for songs...beginner

Johnny Cash - "Wreck of the Old 97", "Flesh & Blood", "Blue Train" and others
John Prine - "Paradise", "That's the Way the World Goes Round"

and about a million other songs.  Use the transposing feature on Chordie's song list.  Anything you find with three chords can probably be transposed into the key of G.

- Zurf

Granted B chord amnesty by King of the Mutants (Long live the king).
If it comes from the heart and you add a few beers... it'll be awesome! - Mekidsmom
When in doubt ... hats. - B.G. Dude

Re: Looking for songs...beginner

Welcome Mickey, There are some good suggestions above. I would have to ask what genre of music are you most

interested in? It might help you early on not only to be familiar with a song but also be energetic to want to learn

and play a song you like. If country is ok for you I recommend Waylon Jennings old song "I don't think Hank done

it this way". A two chord song with a very straight forward 4/4 timing, easy to strum. Waylon recorded it in B and E

I believe, but, you say you'd like to stick to G-C and D for now so try the song in the key of G with a C.

        Hope this helps.       Mike

Yeah, Mr. Bojangles, thanks a good one also.  Perhaps an easy song to invest in try Brown Eyed Girl which will come up at any jam session and you'll be glad to know it.

This thing has been stuck in my mind for 2 days now! The grand kids love it. Thanks!(I think.)

Re: Looking for songs...beginner

Well without having any idea what sort of music you like.... Can you make an "E" chord? There's a Kings of Leon song called "ragoo" that sounds way more impressive than it is because you just slide the E chord up to 5th fre, 4th fret and back and it sounds pretty cool even though basically you haven't changed chord shapes at all! You should also check out some super simple tabs (like "Come as you are" by Nirvana) and start impressing your buddies smile As for chords, there's a plethora of 3 chord songs out there. If you like Johnny Cash, they make great beginner songs because it becomes super easy to add in that bass bounce, which adds alot to the song. Check out "Walk The Line". I wish I knew what kind of music you were into, I probably could think of something else...

Know what you mean, buddy.
If they love that, play "Wild Thang" (You make my heart sing) using your monster voice for them and get them to sing along. They'll go at that until your fingers fall off.
