Topic: I don't know what to play

hello fellow guitarists,

I've been playing for almost a year now and i've mastered the easy chords. I'm able to do some fingerpicking as well but now i'm a little stuck, everything i seem to chose just seems to difficult or no challenge at all. Everybody went thrue this stage i guess so how did your choice of songs to play evolve? please help me out for this fase of guitarring is rather unpleasant. thx on advance

Re: I don't know what to play

What do you like?  If you like some older stuff, buy a Beatles or Zepelin songbook.  I have those plus a Dylan one and that is all I need!  I guess my suggestion would be to find a songbook that you really like.  They usually have the chords and the tab, all right there.

Re: I don't know what to play

Learn  some slide or work on your capo.

Re: I don't know what to play

Hi barto,

I think some people get to a stage where their playing feels like they get stuck. I have to agree with the other comments - now you've got the basic chord shapes, try mixing them up through slides and capos.

Capo's particularly are really nice to alter the tones you're playing.

It really depends what you're into as to what you'll play next. I've found the cool thing about chordie is that it will allow you to see what others are playing and may point you in some new directions...

Re: I don't know what to play

I can only play songs i have heard a lot before. Try to sing along, it makes the struggeling gitarplay more bearable to listen to, so you practise more, and get your fingers trained to work without thinking about it. The progressions and chord changes come in as i hear the song in my head.

that means you must write to make it right right? Repent... re-pen-T... re pen Truth

Simple as that.

Re: I don't know what to play

Try writing some of your own tunes or maybe just ad lib over chords that you like

Re: I don't know what to play

Damn you're all friendly people, i didnt expect so many replys.

U can see other users' songbooks ?

I'm into about everything, if its good that is. My dad has a rather good taste of music and i guess i inherited most of it. So the variety of music to play isnt the issue.By now I figured out that i was just being lazy, if i put a bit of effort in it I do seem to find songs to play.

See you all at my next question. Or maibe yours  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_rolleyes.gif" border=0 alt="Rolling Eyes">

Re: I don't know what to play

When I'm stuck in a rut with my playing I browse for songs I like until I find one that is slightly (or sometimes majorly) above my playing ability. I then sort of challenge myself to learn it, it keeps things interesting and you learn a new song in the bargain. Check out the Eagles, they have a good mix of easy/harder stuff and they throw in some interesting chords.

Re: I don't know what to play

I totally do that too! <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

Re: I don't know what to play

Work on triads and scales- they're not all there is, but they're close  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile"> .

Re: I don't know what to play

man, i know what you mean, i've been playing now for about 2 years and it seems that i,m always searching for something new. i print off a lot of sogs and i've got a binder with about 100 or so songs. what i find myself doing now is going back to those songs that i printed off a while ago that i couldn't get then but now that the old fingers a little more nimble, it seems it's not as difficult as it was then. hope that helps

Oliver

Re: I don't know what to play

hi there. i too like playing new thigns which is why i search this site a lot. i think of a song i like and search for it and play it.

i find if a song is too hard to play, just play it for a few hours each day and by the time a week has gone, you'd be suprised how much you've progressed.

i remember learning some donovan songs. at first i thought 'this is impossible, i'll never learn it,' and now i can play some of his stuff behind me head (literally!)

Just stick at it, and push your limits <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

Re: I don't know what to play

Check out some David Gray or Damien Rice songs..work the capo and if you've got an MP3 or similar, just feel the groove..

Re: I don't know what to play

my playing evolved from trying to play the music i was into,,pink floyd,,u2,,snow patrol,, just what your interested in really,, print the chords then try and replicate it,, it helps if you got some pedals and stuff,, i.e,, digital delay for u2 stuff,, i like the accoustic type stuff myself,,tho i do have some good kit to make it sound better,, good luck with it,, a very fulfilling hobby <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_biggrin.gif" border=0 alt="Very Happy">

Re: I don't know what to play

I just signed up to this site having used it for the past few months.  So let me first say a massive Hi Y'awl to everyone on the forum, like Barto just said, you sure are a friendly bunch.

Having read some questions and answers I now don't feel alone.  Suddenly I know all these people in the same boat, struggling with the same things I struggle with, and doing the same things I do to get round it.  From finding music to strum patterns to using an MP3, it's all been done before.  It sure is nice to know.  Standing on the shoulders of giants eh!!

So, apart from thanking everyone in advance for their help, there's only 2 things left to do, read some more and go fetch my guitar.

PS, if anyone's got any good easyish country songs they know then feel free to let me know.

Be light unto thyself.
