Was just wondering how often you change your strings on your six string banjo and what make you prefer . I,ve been using Elixir 10s bronze and they still have a good tone and plenty of volume .they have been on it since last year when I got it set-up after buying it from the Bay..What say you .cheers.
If they stilol sound good to you, thhen they are good. Although you may be surprised at the difference in sound when you do change them. I am assuming it is the same as a guitar. If you play only once in awhile, then you are probably good, but if you play daily, you should probably change them. I change my strings every three to six months.

I've posted this before, but you might like to try it.............
I bought a cheap 6 string banjo on Ebay a few years ago and was always a little disappointed with the sound. The high strings were OK but the bass sounded awful - more like a thud. One day, I was looking for some "Alternative Tunings" for the guitar and came across what I believe is called a "Nashville High tuning". It's basically the high octave strings from a 12 string guitar set, and the difference is remarkable.
Now it sounds like a banjo and is great to play. You get some interesting "Double notes" as the highest string is now the G string

Hi Pete and Howard,thanks for replying.Firstly it is phospher bronze strings,10~47. Never thought about the 12string octave trick, what gauge strings would be best suited?..........HB
To answer my own qustion, Elixir don,,t make a 12 set in p/bronze but are available in 80/20 bronze the gauge for 10s are 18 and 27 for the E and A. Don,t know if my local store has got something that would do, I,ll look in tomorrow.

Medium set would be .012, .016, .010, .014, .020, .030
Light set would be .010, .014, .009, .012, .018, .027
I used Martin Extra lights 80/20 strings, but only because thats all the local shop had.

Can,t quite get my head round these figures with the G and D strings lighter than the 1st . Think I,ll stay with the 10 -47 Elixir p/b.
