This is a pretty neat article that we all wonder about on this forum. What music really does or us

I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

Ha!  This presumes we have a brain to begin with.

I certainly wasn't including myself in the article.  I thought for the rest of you though.

Re: Music and your brain

I think most of us believe in the power of music. Be it healing, brain development, or something else. Funny, as I started reading the article I thought of learning diff languages. As we all know, music is another language, if you read it that is. And learning to play an instrument stimulates the brain to the nth degree. Just another article to back up the fact that music should not be cut from schools.

Re: Music and your brain

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the interesting link!  I'm going to be on the speech team this fall, and your article gave me an idea for doing a persuasive speech on why adults should participate in music. Now, you're probably saying, "Adults and music? Won't you be speaking to kids?" And the answer is, "Yes, I will be speaking to kids. But I will be JUDGED by grown ups!" Gotta' know how to play the system, right!

Re: Music and your brain

This paragraph surprised me: "In this study, 70 musicians and non-musicians aged 59 to 80 were evaluated by neuropsychological tests and surveyed about general lifestyle activities. The musicians scored higher on tests of mental acuity, visual-spatial judgment, verbal memory and recall, and motor dexterity."

Not all or probably not even most but many adult musicians drink an enormous amount of adult beverages, or have had their fill and stopped drinking them altogether, and I would think that would have a negative effect on cognitive activities.

Re: Music and your brain

I sometimes have trouble finding my socks and underware in the laundry basket but at the same time I can recall the lead solos and chord changes to any song I have played and remember the chess openinings and variations of all the major systems,I occasionally have a memory lapse trying to remember a persons name and I think we tend to remember things that we like or are important to us but I stll lose things that are on the table in front of me so go figure lol

Re: Music and your brain

You've got the right idea MB.  I think that would be an excellent subject to speak on and perhaps unexpected.  Go for it. and let us know how it turns out.  At least we all know that music is good for us, whether we drink spirits or not.
