i find if i'm struggling with a song start playing it slow one chord at a time then play it a bit faster each time till it sounds right

I think song this works well in a 3 time strum, ie, down, down, up, down , up, down, reasonably fast.

listen to the original by john lennon. and just mimic the pattern. it's alot clearer than the covers i've heard

This is a great song. As I have mentioned before, I find playing and listening with my eyes closed helps me to figure out strumming patterns. If you are a beginer and cannot play with eyes closed then at least listen to the song that way. I find the best way is to put on head phones, lay down on the floor in the dark so that there are no distractions and listen........it should come to you.
