Topic: pink floyd and musical geniuses

I know and love this group. Now it is even "not done" to love pinkfloyd, that's why I find it SUPER that they all sing, the song another brick in the wall, remix, I don't know the guy. So this means for instance that my daughter, huge R&B fan, has to change her idea, when I asked how old this number was; answer a couple of months, I needed to say 30 years.

My SPECIAL interest, goes in fact to SYD BARRETT, the founder of (at the beginning) THE PINK FLOYD. I know almost everything, concerning that "poor" guy. I don't think what they wrote when he died on 7th of July last year. I know that every year, 1 or 2 times, the other members visited him, to pay, and it was still a lot of money, from their first album. a piper..., this is an exemple how drugs can cause braindamage ( also a pink floyd song). Gilmour was his best friend, learned him to play more blues style, because Syd discovered the blues, playing rolling stones songs, beatle stuff at that time They were best friends, but he went to Cambridge high school of arts, where he found a former best friend: Roger Waters and he met also other friends of Waters: Wright and Mason. The Pink Floyd was a fact. They all say he was a genius, might be, but I can give the answer, I liked pink floyd, since the albums Ummagumma, atom heart mother, live in Pompei, I have The Piper at The Gates, A saucerful of sectrets, there is only one Barrett song JUG BAND BLUES also recorded with David Gilmour, still his best friend, who played together with the group while Barrett, still there but in what condition, had to leave. Even after he left he was the source of inspiration of many Pink Floyd song. Songs as shine on you crazy diamond, Wish you were here, and the biggest one, the wall is written FOR SYD BARRETT. (This story remebers me of another SUPER musician, BRIAN , rolling stone JONES, also tormented by the fact that teir manager, had put and locked up, Jagger and Richards. Imagine that situation, he started with the stones, he was the best player, all the women went crazy when they saw his "angelface", if I was GAY, I think I should love him. So I know a lot of musical facts, but are there MEMBERS HERE ON CHORDIE WHO OWN RECORDS MADE BY SYD BARRETT. Prbably there have to be songs. EMI rejected at least 3 songs, still active in Pink Floyd, like scream, vegetable man, thy last scream. EMI wanted songs as bike, see Emily play. I am desperatly looking for the solo albums, maybe 2 or 3, of SYD. Also I am looking and hoping to find BRIAN JONES songs.

Those stories are really sad, and similar. Does somebody has suggestions, or know where I can find their songs?

Hi Gita.

Yer not alone. I am a massive fan of syd barrett, I also know too much about him  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">

Roger and David visited him for just a little while to give him his royalties from the records but every year they never saw him they still made sure he got his royalties.

But after reading a lot about him, particularly the book " lost in the woods" it makes me tink that David and Roger talked bollox sometimes about how much they loved syd. Syd went into the recording studio when they were doing the finishing touches of "wish you were here"and asked when he was to put his guitar tracks down on the music, to get the reply, It is all finished syd we have done it. If they really cared that much for an old friend, they could have let him join back in the band, or at least let him try get back in.

Also, I wrote in a thread about Syd and drugs. I got a reply ( but I never replied back to that) that david gilmour replaced Syd in the band. Well, he never actually replaced him in my eyes, even though maybe technically he might have. Syd and David were in the band at the same time, so there were 5 members of the pink floyd then. It was when Syd stpped turning up for gigs or arriving at gigs and strumming one chord all the time he was asked to leave. David was originally brought in to help with the guitar while Syd forgot and stared into nothing.

Gilmour added something different to the band sound wise and I think maybe ths is why they never tried to get Syd involved in future recordings.

Lots of people think his music is crp and I can see why they think that, but if they actually listen t the lyrics and the structure of the songs he wrote, some might change their minds.

His first song he wrote is thought to have been Effervesing elephant. Now any 16 year old that writes a song like that and tis was without drugs has got to be a genius.

I could sit here and rewrite a book on him but I best not  <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_lol.gif" border=0 alt="Laughing">

As for the brian jones stuff, sorry, no idea, but I am going to go hunt for them now. I will let you know if I fnd anything

Re: pink floyd and musical geniuses

In fact that is what I tought, I think that David was maybe not present, on the first album, but after a while they played all together, because of the instability of their so called friend Syd. And the drug part: My profession is being a Medical Doctor and it is only when, a healthy person takes drugs, like LSD for years, that he can suffer from braindamage. But if your mind is already very instable: STAY AWAY from LSD. That can accelerate the process very fast.

Re: pink floyd and musical geniuses

Mmmmmh, I have too say that having read Nick Masons' book I kinda got the impression he didn't really have much time for or indeed anything to do with Syd when he left the band. Maybe I picked it up wrong though.

Re: pink floyd and musical geniuses

Hi CRAIG, I found on a peer to peer about 30 different songs, written and performed by SYD Barrett. They are just common songs. If this is the SYD BARRETT, there is nothing wrong for him, but he plays tune with weird names, some songs are Bob Dylanesque, meaning simple, easy melody, BUT NOT LONGER PINK FLOYD.

Re: pink floyd and musical geniuses

Bob Dylan blues, the song, I have this somewhere on my PC, and it is really strange that he tries so hard to "imitate" Bob Dylan.
I paid for "limewire pro" and it is unbelievable the songs you can find, I found about 6 songs of the charlie watts quintet, jazz with a big J

Re: pink floyd and musical geniuses

One of the most beautiful songs written and performed by Pink Floyd is "IF" LP: Atomic Heart Mother" and the best is yet to come, there is a life performance available, where Sinnead 'O Connor sings this song live with Roger Waters. It is a real heart killer.
Of course "shine on your crazy diamond.
