Topic: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

Hey Everyone,

I had a "nostalgia attack" when I heard about these two guitars coming back. I played both in my youth about 50 years ago which was before I knew about the "action" adjustment and just played the Kay as it was with the 3 chords I knew. I bet I had a "grip" like Tarzan! smile

On the subject of "nostalgia", anyone miss the Mosrites? Before I knew the manufacturer's name I just called them the "Ventures' Guitars". Maybe they'll make a comeback too?

I have a Ventures concert on YouTube which shows Nokie, playing a guitar which looks similar to the Mosies at the headstock (if I'm remembering correctly) and I think they were Mr. Edwards' own brand. Anyone know for sure?

Thanks

Re: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

Kay guitars ... that's awesome!

The guitar I first learned on was a Kay that my Dad owned. I was around 8 years old when I started plunking on it. All I really remember about it is that it had 2 seagulls on the pickguard. When Dad started teaching me some basic chords, the songs he used were "Michael Rowed the Boat Ashore" and "Four String Winds". A few years later I discovered Jethro Tull, and our musical tastes went separate ways.

Thanks for that great memory, Strummerboy!

Re: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

My first was also a Silvertone  acoustic arch top

You can see all my video covers on http://www.youtube.com/bensonp1000
I have finally found happiness in my life.  Guitars, singing, beer and camping.  And they all intertwine wonderfully.

I introduced my dad to JT with Thick as a Brick and it brought him into the era of music that I listen to. It was the flute that grabbed him and wouldn't let go.

My first guitar was a Hondo electric I inherited from my brother. He moved out of the house before I did and left it behind. I do however have an old Kay mandolin. But even with new tuners it doesn't like to stay in tune.

Re: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

I used Harmony for years. I had a Harmony rocket, that I paid 150 for, sold it to a guy in the Navy for 300, went right out and got an acoustic Harmony, had that for a long time. The latter was a perfect, take to the beach, kind of thing.

Re: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

My first guitar was a Harmony , Stella in Sunburst. My dad didn't want me to spend a lot since he didn't think I'd stay with it. The fretboard was just stained over wood, no rosewood or maple. I wore the stain off the fretboard in a lot of places before I gave it away. Here it is 50 years later and I've been thru about 30 different guitars and thousands of dollars. But I'm still playing and loving the journey.
Thanks for the memories.

Re: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

No problems, Joe. I have a question though: Seeing that this was 50 years ago, do you know if those guitars had a truss rod?

The reason I ask is because Paul McCartney's Höfner bass didn't have one, which is why it was hard to keep in tune. The reason I ask is because the time frame seems about right (early 60's or so?), and I don't remember myself.

Thanks!

Re: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

Bill, Mine did have a steel reinforced neck. It had a little decal on the headstock that mentioned it. I don't know if it was adjustable though . If it was adjustable it would have been thru the sound hole as the headstock didn't have a removable cover. I didn't know enough at the time what that meant . I know Martin didn't have adjustable truss rods until 1974. Because of the cost of neck repairs the ones I play regularly all need to have adjustable truss rods.

Re: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

My buddy had an old Silvertone that was shaped like a Fender Jaguar. The turtle shell pick guard had no screws in the bottom side, he used  it in his punk band, pulling the guard up and in front of the amp, man could that thing feedback from the reverse side of the guard! He also put an Ibanez clear sticker over the Silver and he had the one and only IBANEZRTONE!. IT WAS A GREAT SOUNDING GUITAR FOR PUNK!

Re: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

Your buddy sounds very imaginative, beamer! Anything on YouTube we could hear/watch? Ibanezrtone! I love it! Sounds like it probably had its very own guitar stand, too. The fact that it was shaped like a Jag, makes me miss having a Silvertone. The first band I was in, The Watchmen (yep we had the name first, way back in the mid 60's), the three strings all played identical Jags a la The Ventures.

Re: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

Did you guys have a bass and he didn't make the pic?

Head Bangin'? I liked "Redneck Babies" with the Dixie intro. Although  the recording quality is not what you would have liked it to be, be glad you have it uploaded!

Your calling them "classics" made me laugh, but just think: The Beatles put some really scratchy stuff on their Anthology albums, so who knows?

Your drummer had (has) great timing, especially as he had to carry the bass part of your tunes if there was no bass player, I really couldn't tell.

"Black Dog": I didn't get it right away because I don't think I ever heard Bonzo doing that particular solo. So, I thought to myself, "Huh! So now we get to hear the drummer tune up for a change! How unique is that?" Then I read the title of the piece. smile

Thanks for sharing part of your histrionics...... I mean history with us, Beamer! big_smile

Re: Kay and Harmony Comeback?

Oh there was a bass in there  the singer plays it.  not bad though for a 16 yr old kid with a dog pile tape recorder at t a pick-nick.  Chris, the drummer, as I said is very big in world music, and has sessioned for Sting also.  His band is a fusion jazz band ,, but let me tell you,,, when he rocks,,  he is a mad thrash metronome of a player.  My dad would hire him to plays Timpani drums for special music services at church.

OH and I wish I had been in that band LOLOL in the pic above, L to R  Chris Wabish, Chuck Hoover (who taught me how to play) and Dave Nelesnick (creator of the band)
