Topic: Sept. 2016 FSOTM: City of New Orleans - Don't Think Twice It's Alright

First of all, a special thanks to Dino and Zurf for stepping up so quickly with your Featured Song Choices!  Secondly, it looks like easybeat and UJB jumped the gun - so I'll be moving those posts into this thread!

As you can tell by the title, the Featured Song(s) of the Month have been chosen, so with out further ado...

The City of New Orleans was chosen by Dino and dedicated to NELA and others affected by the recent weather issues in that area

From Wikipedia:  ""City of New Orleans" is a folk song written by Steve Goodman (and first recorded for Goodman's self-titled 1971 album), describing a train ride from Chicago to New Orleans on the Illinois Central Railroad's City of New Orleans in bittersweet and nostalgic terms.
Goodman got the idea while traveling on the Illinois Central line for a visit to his wife's family. The song has been recorded by numerous artists both in the US and Europe."

Johnny Cash:  http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … 58000.html
And here's an Arlo Guthrie recording:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvMS_ykiLiQ

Don't Think Twice, It's Alright was chosen by Zurf

From Wikipedia:  ""Don't Think Twice, It's All Right" is a song written by Bob Dylan in 1962, recorded on November 14 that year, and released on the 1963 album The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan and as a single..... Johnny Cash adapted portions of the song into his own single "Understand Your Man".... The Four Seasons released a cover of the song as a single in 1965 (with the title "Don't Think Twice") under the pseudonym The Wonder Who? Their "joke" version reached the #12 position on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and eventually sold one million copies."

Here's Jonny's Understand your man:  http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/www.g … 77742.html
And here's a video/recording of Dylan himself with the amazing Eric Clapton playing the song:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ar7C6_L3Fg
As with many of Dylan's songs, Peter Paul and Mary brought their special harmonies to it as wel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B61Dud_641g

Hey Easybeat!  It's NOT September yet!  tongue  That's why you didn't see a thread to post in, I see you made your own. LOL!
To keep the forums more organized, I'm going to remove your separate thread though, and everyone can see your link here in my quote!  smile

Oh Shoot!  I can't merge topics together, I can only pull them out of an existing topic and into a new one... so on that note, I'll just PLOP another quote from the "help us pick the FSOTM" thread over here from UJB!

Cool!!

I happen to have my version of that already recorded. Actually I have several. It's part of my regular rotation. This is from last summer when I introduced it to Scott.

Re: Sept. 2016 FSOTM: City of New Orleans - Don't Think Twice It's Alright

My favorite version of Don't Think Twice It's Alright is by Ramblin' Jack Elliot. My own cover most closely resembles his.   Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard also covered it on their album Django and Jimmie.  Just about everyone has covered it.  It's one of those songs that a lot of people can relate to, it seems, and because of that everyone who covers it brings their own style and nuance to it.  I'm eager to hear what folks make of it.

Edit to add: I typed "Don't Think Twice It's Alright" into YouTube and it came up with twenty or so different covers.  From Indigo Girls to Joan Baez to Merle Haggard to Jerry Reed and on and on.  Jerry Reed's version is worth a listen.

Re: Sept. 2016 FSOTM: City of New Orleans - Don't Think Twice It's Alright

Dylan did get to spend some time with Woodie Guthrie, shortly before Woodie died.  Ramblin' Jack Elliott had spend years with Woodie, taking care of him on the road and learning everything he could.  But Dylan took off huge, and at some point a reporter interviewing Ramblin' Jack Elliott asked him how he had learned to sound like Dylan so quickly after Dylan success had got going.  Ramblin' Jack Elliott told the reporter that he had sounded like Dylan for twenty years, and Dylan had only been playing for two or three, and then left the reporter to do the math.

Anyway, I knew the Ramblin' Jack Elliott version of Don't Think Twice It's Alright long before I knew it was a Dylan song, so I guess with one person at least he got his revenge.

The film Alices Restaurant first got me interested in Arlo.  And Bob Dylans Hey Mr Tambourine Man was the first song I remember of his that got me listening to him. I wonder if Bob gave himself the last name Dylan as a nod to Dylan Thomas.

The enthusiasm here is awesome!  Keep it up!  Nice covers by all.  Each one sounds completely different, and I think that's pretty gosh darn awesomely cool!  smile

Here's Don't Think Twice It's Alright.  I think I may re-record it later in the month after polishing it up a little.

Edit: Do not listen to this version.  It is an abomination and will cause permanent hearing loss and could well mess up your sock drawer.  There's another version posted later.  Listen to that one if you dare.

The quick answer is yes. During his Dinkytown days, Zimmerman began introducing himself as "Bob Dylan". In his memoir, Dylan acknowledged that he had been influenced by the poetry of Dylan Thomas.

I have always liked Dylan and have been to several of his concerts. The First one was Bob Dylan and Paul Simon. Many others sang his songs better than he did. The Byrds were some of the best, and Peter, Paul & Mary did some Dylan's songs and sounded  great.  Dylan is a great writer.

Re: Sept. 2016 FSOTM: City of New Orleans - Don't Think Twice It's Alright

Thank you C G I have often wonderd where Bob got his Dylan from. You mentioned another great song writer who I like also that is Paul Simon. I agree many of Bobs song are sung better by other people. Some songs of Bob's  need Dylans voice to make it work. Zurf does a great job of Bob's song.

All these different versions of Don't Think Twice have inspired me. smile

When I got the guitar out tonight and went to work on it. It should be somewhat fit for human audio consumption before the end of the month.

Zurf, I believe you have a new campfire song. smile
