Topic: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

Okay so I'll admit there are some pretty sweet videos out there and its cool to see you're fav. artists on T.V. and everything, but am I the only one who thinks that putting the FOCUS of everything on the video is screwing up a lot of stuff? Seems like you can have one well directed video without really having the talent to match it and still be famous, while on the other hand some really decent musicians that don't have the funding to make videos will fizzle out of recognition. Now being a country music fan i mostly only know about that (so maybe its different in other genres?)
I think we've lost a lot since the days when you were judged by how good you SOUNDED (especially back when people would probly hear you live on one of the nashville shows or something). Videos are the doctored up versions of the way a person plays, sings, and even looks.... anyway this is open for debate but i think the 'music video' is responsible for the decline in talented artists we seem to be in these days.

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

Yeah I remember a time when all you had to go by was the sound of the music...Had to use your imagination as to what the singer looked like and you related to the song from your own perspective... Maybe Im just getting old..lol... But I do like the older music alot better... IMO video did put an end to the heartfelt music that i remember.. You have to have a certain look now then be so-so talented and the promoters will do the rest... In the days of old...all you had to do was sound good..

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

Music video clips DO NOT ruin the music.
On the other hand you are 100% right and because of the following reason(s).
To have a more or less decent video, you need actors or the band members, and this is all very expensive.
I don't know exactly how to answer, but 1 example: WHO REMEMBERS STILL TODAY THE CLIP WITH GUNS & ROSES, for the song NOVEMBER RAIN??.
I don't know a single person, who didn't see the clip. The Wedding Dress visible in that clip, caught our attention and so pushing away the music, because back then in 1992 or 1993, all the women I know, did see the WEDDING DRESS, more than they listened to the song, which they could even sing without realising it.
Movie makers, smooth publicity guys, use a lot that technic, mostly maybe 1 second, and studies made about this phenomenon proofed that "not conscience, but our subconscience is under influence.
About this topic, I can write a book. The music, in those clips influences your mind. They will not spent 1$ resulting in the fact that you will not buy this album.
As a beginning artist, it all starts with the look, the attitude and the work they put in you, which isn't cheap. The clips are ment to attract people to buy, and not to push them away. Record companies do .great efforts to promote their artists, representatives going with that music from radiostation to radiostation.
I hope I could help.

Where does the music fit in?
It just seems to be put on the back burner while commercialism takes center stage..The record companies blame everything from p2p networks to cd burners for the loss in sales..

Do they not realize that most people are listening to the music in their cars,at work, relaxing outside ..etc..and it doesnt matter what visuals they add the only thing that we can see/hear at these times is the music...

I dont spend alot of time watching videos but i do spend ALOT of time doing the other things i just mentioned..

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

well see thats kind of the point... music ISN"T about image its about MUSIC. Now don't get me wrong there are some cool videos out there but the ones i like were good songs to begin with. it just pisses me off when i have to watch some stupid talentless funny boy sing every day on my t.v and he keeps going straight to number one when his music sux >:(
Now as for guns n roses i myself am a fan and know that they could have made it without the video definitely... and im not syaing music videos in themselves are bad im just saying they oughtn't to decide who makes it and who doesn't

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

Look. I understand that the music business is just that...a business. With the  artist being a product but it seems to me that the emphasis nowadays is not on the actual quality of the music but the image of the artist.
It sometimes seems as if it doesn't matter how crappy you sing but do you  project the right marketable image.
So they have to market the artist where they are best...i.e. if they look good put them in as many videos as humanly possible and hope that nobody notices that they sound pretty lame.
Are the video's ruining music? I think they give too much exposure to mediocre artists who really can't compete with high quality artists in the field of actual music but look good enough to sell a few cd's before the bubble bursts.

Sure, more emphasis on video means less emphasis on music.  On the other hand, we have another technical marvel that is allowing music to excel.  CDBaby and other similar independant music internet sales sites!

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

I like seeing live performances of my favorite bands on tv.  But "real" live performances are rare.  Most vidoes are not recorded live.  I understand sound quality and all, but still.
When I hear an older song (before vidoes) I usually think about what I was doing when I first heard it.  Or my friends from back then.  Or a girl from back then.  But when I hear a newer song, I think of the video.  Heck, now yall got me thinking of girls from back then.  What were we talking about?   lol

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

Totally agree with most of you guys.  When I hear a song these days I think firstly of the video.  Like all of us I have seen a video and been captured by the 'clip'.  The music is almost irrelevent.  But having wrote that, I have also been pursuaded to buy music because the video clip is so good.  I have also heard some great songs with very average clips.  The worst videos are the ones that I just don't understand ???  Like there is abosolutely nothing to do with the song.
No matter how good the video is though, LIVE is the best.

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

I've hated music videos for as long as I can remember.  I've hated pretty much everything on TV for about that long, too, so it's not as if they're different somehow.

I just think trying to turn music into some visual dramatic thing is dumb.  I can tolerate the ones that are concert footage, but I just can't stand there watching musicians try to act.

When I'm watching a ball game I often like to turn the volume off to tune out the idiocy of the announcers.   With music videos, I wish I could do the same.  Turn off the tube so I don't have to watch.  Just listen.

Someday we'll win this thing...

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

I just spent a good part of three hours recording this song then making a video for it.
It is a John Prine cover, and the pictures I got from the net, but still took a long time.

I also put a few others on a few days ago. Lies of despair, i am an atheist and the very first song I ever wrote in 1993 " memories" but it is badly done with an awful drum machine, lol.

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

lol... that was nice. See if all music videos were like that they would make me laugh instead of puke. it was nice because you still had to listen to the song to decide if you liked it or not

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

A couple of years ago a fine band of the 80's, The Alarm, put out a single. They realised that since they were all in their 40's it had not much chance of making an impact on the charts, so they hired a bunch of young good looking fellows to stand in for them in the video. Needless to say the single reached to top 30 singles chart (UK). After they revealed who they were, the music press realised they had been beat at their own game and duly got stuck into them. Not before The Alarm had made them all look like the phonies they are. The song was called 45RPM.
Proves a point I think.

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: MUSIC VIDEOS RUINING MUSIC?

and also was it not chrissy boy from radio one that banned the song from his show because he felt like someone had just extracted the urine from him?

Mike Peters done a fantastic thing there by proving charts are hyped up and fixed!!
I should not matter what age a band are or how they look, it is the music that should sell the song, nothing else!!!
