Topic: JUNE 2017 FSOTM - BOBBY McGEE - CHRIS CORNELL

Wow June already!.  For this month`s FSOTM we have 2 songs we are looking for, one by a Female Artist and one by a Male Artist.
The chosen song for Female Artist was Janis Joplin -  Bobby McGee.
The chosen song for a Male Artist was Chris Cornell - Any Song Of His can be covered, so you can really go to town here, picking any song of his you would like!

FEMALE ARTIST
JANIS JOPLIN – BOBBY McGEE

From Wikipedia: Me and Bobby McGee" is a song written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster, originally performed by Roger Miller. Others performed the song later, including the Grateful Dead, Kristofferson himself,[1] Kenny Rogers and The First Edition, and most famously Janis Joplin, whose posthumously released version topped the U.S. singles chart in 1971, making the song the second posthumously released No. 1 single in U.S. chart history after "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" by Otis Redding. Billboard ranked Joplin's version as the No. 11 song for 1971.

Joplin recorded the song for inclusion on her Pearl album only a few days before her death in October 1970. Studio musician Stephen Ryder manned the keyboard for that session, and famously "Got a little carried away." Kristofferson had sung the song for her, and singer Bob Neuwirth taught it to her. Kristofferson did not know she had recorded it until after her death. The first time he heard her recording of it was the day after she died.[3]Joplin's version topped the charts to become her only number one single and in 2004, her version of this song was ranked No. 148 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Whilst it is very hard to find any video footage of Janis Joplin singing this song, there are a few audio`s to listen, some with pictures of this talented singer.

MALE ARTIST
CHRIS CORNELL – ANY SONG OF HIS

From Wikipedia: Chris Cornell (born Christopher John Boyle; July 20, 1964 – May 18, 2017) was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He was best known as the lead vocalist for the rock bands Soundgarden and Audioslave. Cornell was also known for his numerous solo works and soundtrack contributions since 1991, and as the founder and frontman for Temple of the Dog, the one-off tribute band dedicated to his late friend Andrew Wood.
Cornell is considered one of the chief architects of the 1990s grunge movement, and is well-known for his extensive catalog as a songwriter, his nearly four-octave vocal range, and his powerful vocal belting technique. He released four solo studio albums, Euphoria Morning (1999), Carry On (2007), Scream (2009), Higher Truth (2015), and the live album Songbook (2011). Cornell received a Golden Globe Award nomination for his song "The Keeper", which appeared in the 2011 film Machine Gun Preacher, and co-wrote and performed the theme song to the James Bond film Casino Royale (2006), "You Know My Name". His last solo release was the charity single "The Promise", written for the ending credits for the film of the same name. He was voted "Rock's Greatest Singer" by readers of Guitar World, ranked 4th in the list of "Heavy Metal's All-Time Top 100 Vocalists" by Hit Parader, 9th in the list of "Best Lead Singers of All Time" by Rolling Stone, and 12th in MTV's "22 Greatest Voices in Music".
Across his entire catalog, Cornell has sold 14.8 million albums, 8.8 million digital songs, and 300 million on-demand audio streams in the U.S. alone,as well as over 30 million records worldwide as of 2017. He was nominated for 14 Grammy Awards and won twice.
Cornell was found dead of an apparent suicide in his Detroit hotel room early on the morning of May 18, 2017, shortly after performing at a Soundgarden concert the night before. He suffered from depression and substance abuse problems earlier in his life.

Re: JUNE 2017 FSOTM - BOBBY McGEE - CHRIS CORNELL

Does it need to be a Chris Cornell original, or  can it be a cover he did in the same style he performed it?

BGD .....Good question!  I personally would have thought this competition was about doing Chris Cornell songs, his originals .... and that is him doing a cover of a Bob Marley song ......... however it is up to you to decide what you want to do ..... smile

Well, when in PA last year - Myself, UJB, and his buddy Scott fiddled through Bobby McGee together!  It's been up since, over here:  https://soundcloud.com/user-935684483/bobby-mcgee

I've another recording of it with just me that I had sent to Bill a while back.  Perhaps I'll do a new recording and video and plop it up here.  wink  I think MeKidsDad has a few Chris Cornell songs that he's been working on.  I'll harass him and see if I can get a recording out of him!

I don't know Chris Cornell's body of work. I checked out a few songs, and while I recognize the talent I have to admit it's not my style. I'd have a very hard time learning to perform any of the songs I listened to, even were I to massively Zurfelize them.

Zurf  I dug your Zurfing USA version of Bobby Mcgee.

Re: JUNE 2017 FSOTM - BOBBY McGEE - CHRIS CORNELL

Anymore folks going to have ago at these two songs? I have tried a few times to do Bobbie McGee ............. that`s as far as I got ........ i get to the end bit and end up sounding like a screeching banshee lol as I attempt to perform it like Janis Joplin or Pink  ( by the way i have listened to Pinks version quite a few times - I love her version of it!).

I have to be honest and say i don`t know any of Chris Cornell`s music.  So I will go online later today and pick the first one that comes up that I think i could possibly attempt (haha) and try and see what i can do with it.

mojo ....I haven`t even heard of Chris Cornell and I am going to have ago lol ............. I was meant to go pick one the other night of his to attempt but it didn`t work out as ended up with a sick grandchild.  So hoping tonight to attempt one of his if i get the chance.  As for Bobby Mcgee, might try it again but hmmmmm can`t seem to nail the end bit, might have to just leave it out.   Don`t want to deafen ya all with my screeching to hit the notes lol.  Oh yeah and my guitar and or ukulele playing leaves a lot to be desired I have decided *sigh*

I know we tend to be humble about our own playing and singing, but what is good about this forum and this project is that at a big part of it is encouragement. Do a song badly, let others laugh along, you may get some constructive criticism to improve your performance, and everyone learns and gets encouraged in a safe space. How often do you get that?  Hardly ever.

Exactly!  It's not about doing it "amazingly" or sounding "just like them" - it's about doing your own thing.  big_smile

Now, if I could just find some time to do a recording when there's not 20 other things going on in the background - I'd have a lot more songs up to listen to!  I may have to just go out back and allow the rooster to chime in and record anyway.  wink  Wouldn't be the first time!
