Topic: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

This crossed my mind today after reading Tig`s comment in the Suggested FSOTM for July and Tig mentioned he had the privilage of meeting Harry Chapin and his brother at a school function.  Tig mentioned this because that is one of the artists that has been chosen by beamer for this months July FSOTM.

I thought to myself, now that is pretty cool as I like Harry Chapin`s music and its not something that most people get to do, is to meet famous or well known musicians.

So it got me to thinking, who here has had the pleasure of rubbing shoulders, meeting a famous or well know musican?  Who, Where, How did you meet them?  Tell us your encounter story smile

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

The first time I was looking after my friend's music shop whilst he was on holiday a guy came in, he looked a little scruffy with a heavy coat on and a tatty bag over his shoulder. I greeted him and he wanted some guitar strings and, being all keen in my new position as shop manager I did suggest that we could fit them and set up his guitar for him, to which he declined. We then had a bit of a chat about nothing consequential and he left.

A couple of weeks later when my friend had returned I called in the shop to find him chatting to the same guy and after I greeted them my friend turned to me and said "Oh I see you have already met Ian Gillan from Deep Purple"............ lol

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

Years ago when I was 16 we rented a small house at the beach. At that time I was just starting to play classical guitar and doing a basic thumb and two fingers was the best I could do but it still sounded good. I was sitting in the screen in porch and watching the beach. Around 6:00 PM I could hear some wonderful music from the larger house next door. It turned out when I went over closer to listen and it was  Peter Yarrow, Noel (Paul) Stookey and Mary Travers. They invited me in and we stayed up until sunrise and they let me play some with them. Peter and Paul at that time where playing with classical guitars too. I already knew who they were. And as good as the Peter and Paul were, Mary Travers was the one who had the best voice by far. When I got back to our house and told them the  story no one else believed me. By the next day they were gone.

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

I guided a couple guys from Joe Nichols band on the river for two days.  They were playing nearby and wanted to catch some fish during the day.  I got to meet the rest of the band, including Joe Nichols, and hang out on their bus for a little bit.  All nice guys.  It was funny to me that they dressed better to fish than to work.

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

The only reasonably well-known musician I've ever met was Canada's "Prime Minister of the Blues", Dutchie Mason. It was back in the mid-70s (before he got famous) and he was performing at the Wyse Owl Beverage Room in Dartmouth, NS ... a pretty scuzzy joint in those days. Dutchie was blind drunk, and fell off the stage at our feet. My two buddies and I helped him to a chair, but he was incoherent and we just left him there. I found this pic online (that's him in the middle, beige suit) and this looks like it was taken at the Wyse Owl, around that time period.

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

Many years ago we used to hang around with a band called The Nashville Teens. Those of us who are of a certain age will remember Tobacco Road, but i'm talking a good few years after that. The guitarist at that time was a bloke named Len Tucker, he used to show me a few tricks here and there on guitar, looking back he probably wasn't a great guitarist but to me he was rock royalty. One day he announced he was quiting the Teens to join another band. Don't go we told him. You're doing ok here steady work regular money you're making a big mistake. He quit anyway. A few weeks later we went to see his new band, I was pretty un impressed. We met the band on several occasions for a few beers after the gigs and sat chatting about how well the band was doing, but I still thought he's making a mistake. The band was fronted by a small American girl who sang and played bass, just a gimmick I thought, won't last. Turned out to be Suzy Quatro, and Len eventually married her. Oh well, I got it wrong again.

We're in the midst of our local Canada 150 Celebration and week long "Heatwave" music festival.  Lucy is running the green room (I'm her swamper) and we're having a blast helping out the artists and spending some time before and after their shows.  The biggest names are Bruce Cockburn, Stephen Fearing, and the Paper Boys, but keep your eyes on Shred Kelly, Red Moon Road, Cecile Doo-Kingue, and Don Amero.  All really great people and amazing musicians.  Some just chill and chat, some do a full on half hour warm up/show.  Great fun!

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

Lol

Only this week I attended a Hospice concert that included Brett Young, Night Ranger and Chris DAUGHTREY before leaving the next day for New Mexico.  I have some great pics that I will post when I get home - but in the mean time I'll post the story here- next morning we are Albany airport getting ready to depart and my wife says - hey, that's the singer from last night. Sure enough - the whole band Night Ranger was having coffee at the next table over.  I went over and chatted with them and showed the really great photos I got as I was at the stage edge.    They were really cool to talk too - we boarded together but in the layover in Baltimore they switched planes to go to next show in Salt Lake City, Utah. And we boarded another for Albuquerque,New Mexico

Two years prior to that when we flew to San Diego for my daughters wedding,we had the pleasure of Meeting the lead singer of the band " slightly stupid" . My other daughters boyfriend was with us he plays in a band called Ridgeline Duo(u can find him on you tube). They chatted the whole flight sand exchanged #'s.  he sent Steve tons of stuff and gave him backstage passes at a couple of concerts- really nice guy!

As for Harry Chaplin- lmao- he was signing autographs after the show and my roommates girlfriend was with us in line - she was a true beauty queen.  He asked her where a good placed get a late night meal in East Stroudsburg was. She told him we were all going to the Lantern on Main Street. We did go there and no kidding - twenty minutes later the Capins and band come there and joined us. He was so nice and even paid for our meals

I've been on the same bill as Hugh Corwell from the Stranglers ,had a beer with Steve Hilllage ,Kev Ayres and Mike Oldfield. And jammed with some of Greece's finest over the years.I'm lucky to live in an area inhabited by many famous folk musicians ,nearest is Mike Harding who lives about a mile up the road.

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

nothing recent from me. i once pee'd next to the lead singer from Mungo Jerry (in the summertime). and i met the drummer from "the equals" in a pub, he told me he'd quit the band just before they became "big", so we formed a band with his wife as lead singer...didn't last.

Yes. I met and played for Sammy Davis at Ceasars Palace in Las Vegas for his Birthday party, I played in Vegas for 7 years up and down the strip most of the movie stars I mentioned I met in local clubs I sang with the Chambers Bros.at the Troubador night club in Los Angeles before they cut their big hit "Time."  When I lived in Portland Oregon I played with a hard rock group called "High Voltage" we opened for some top acts including Deep Purple so I got to meet some great musicians. I was getting ready to order pizza at the Leaning Tower of Pizza(that was the name of the restaurant) in Las Vegas when I met Liberace he stepped out of a white Rolls Royce in a full-length white mink coat and came in for a pizza with some friends so I introduced myself and mentioned I was raised in Milwaukee  (he is from the area) and he invited me to join his party so we reminisced about all the good places to go. I met Liza at a night club I was playing at just off the strip we had a drink and talked a bit then I had to get back to playing. When I lived in Milwaukee I played a club called "Papa Joe's" where Roger Smith and Ann-Margret stopped in several times to catch our act he was playing down the road (guitar and singing) back in the mid 1960's there are quite a few more just cannot recall them at the moment. smile

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

Can't resist adding this one ...

I've been trading conversation in an on-line Forum with Mr. Russell Harding for the last few years. He's played guitar with a lot of great acts in Vegas, and still rocks on with his own project "Retro Buzz". Amid this, he always has time for encouragement and sharing knowledge with hobby guitarists like myself at www.chordie.com.

Russell, we're all glad you're here!

I caught that tour when I was stationed in VA Beach.   We went to see Tesla, and basically left when Poison came on.  big_smile

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

Worked on the Rolling Stones gig at Newcastle in 1990. Met all guys in the support acts. The Dan Reed Network and The Quireboys. Helped build stage and drove the Main Roadies about. I drove the support acts from dressing rooms to stage stayed on stage then took them back to dressing rooms. I was then on the side of the stage for the whole of the Stones Gig. Got paid for a whole weeks work and had the most fantastic time. Wish I still had the t shirt with Local Crew Urban Jungle Tour. But down the years it has been lost in 6 house moves.
So I've been on stage with The Rolling Stones, The Dan Reed Network and The Quireboys all in one night.

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

well the timing on this post is coincidental. I flew out of Houston intercontinental  air port ( sorry i am old school George H bush IAH now )on the fourth to go work and while I was checking in I noticed a guy standing off to the side and said to my self that is dusty hill from zz top. he disappeared before I could get my phone out and get a picture. well two hours later who is sitting two rows in front of me ? ZZ top. they had them in a special section in front of business class  with a curtain closed once we were airborne so I never got the opportunity to get a picture and I am not the type to bug some one for an autograph but it was pretty cool sitting that close to a group I have listening to  since I was a kid. I guess they have a persona to keep up never saw them the whole flight with out the cheap sun glasses on.  they had their roadies with them they were in business class with the regular folks

out of tune out of key and out of touch

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

I did get to meet Livingston Taylor one time, but that is hardly difficult.  He is gracious and is willing - eager even - to meet anyone who comes to one of his shows. My brother is a big fan of his (probably likes him better than his big brother James) and so I purchased his latest CD and asked for an autograph.  Now, some musicians, they come back to the stage after some time in the green room or backstage or whatnot and sign autographs quickly, but Livingston literally walked down off the stage at the end of the show and straight to the attached pub where he sat at a table, sipped some iced tea or water (not a beer), and gladly shook the hand of anyone willing to talk to him and chatted for a bit.  Not just the "thanks for coming" chat, but actually asking questions about the fans as if he was the one lucky enough to meet them. Never heard of an artist to willing to do that.

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

I just remembered that on my 30th birthday, I got to share beers with Sam Meyers, Anson Funderburg, and Matt "Guitar" Murphy.

I was introduced to Sam Meyers as a bass player and to Anson Funderburg and Matt "Guitar" Murphy as a harmonica player by a savvy fellow whom they all knew and liked, and whom I had recently met.

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

I met Vernon Reid (Living Color) at a casino in Vegas. I jammed with Phil Guy and Ronnie Baker Brooks (two different occasions). I got backstage to meet Bruce Hornsby after a show in Vegas. He was one of the nicest people you'd ever like to meet. Finally I met and spoke with BB backstage after a show; that was a fun one. He asked me how long I've been playing, I said since the age of 5. He looks at me with a straight face and says "wow. I started when I was 11. By the time you're my age you'll be a lot better than me."

Re: Who has had the opportunity to meet and mingle with famous musicians?

Back in 1980  my friend and I were at Tullamarine Airport Melbourne waiting for a friend of ours to get off a plane from New Zealand.. We were walking around when we saw this short guy dressed up like  a well dressed  cowboy with  long hair and a limp walk past us when  we realised he was Leon Russell. He had played a concert the night before with a bunch of Bluegrass muscians that he had brought over to Australia with him. A bit later we came across a bunch of guys who we heard talking in American accents  chatting  to each other. Somehow we got  talking to them and it turned out they were his band.  The one thing that stuck in my mind was the guys telling us that Leon  Russell was a quiet man of God and didnt do wild parties anymore. Many years later when I heard this song attached it made sense to me what they said. They also us told he was a very humble man. At the time we weren't  sure if these  guys were telling us the truth or not. At a later date watching TV we saw a bit of the concert and those guys were definetly in his band. This song attached will also confirm what they told us was true.
