Topic: JULY 2017 FSOTM - HARRY CHAPIN - A PIRATE LOOKS AT 40

A great line up for JULY`s FSOTM chosen by two of our Chordie members.

We have HARRY CHAPIN, a wonderful singer/songwriter chosen by beamer  and A PIRATE LOOKS AT 40 chosen by  Baldguitardude.

HARRY CHAPIN

You can perform ANY SONG you like as long as it is a HARRY CHAPIN SONG.   A couple of suggested songs from Harry Chapin that beamer suggested were Sequel, Taxi or Cats in the Cradle but they are just suggestions ... you can pick ANY of his songs.

From Wikipedia: Harry Forster Chapin (December 7, 1942 – July 16, 1981) was an American singer-songwriter best known for his folk rock songs including "Taxi", "W*O*L*D", and the No. 1 hit "Cat's in the Cradle".
Chapin was also a dedicated humanitarian who fought to end world hunger; he was a key participant in the creation of the Presidential Commission on World Hunger in 1977.[1] In 1987, Chapin was posthumously awarded the Congressional Gold Medal for his humanitarian work.

Here are a few of links to Harry performing some of his songs:

Taxi:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qYU9b5OF8M
Cats in the Cradle:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUwjNBjqR-c

Here is a list of Harry Chapin top 14 songs: Sniper, Cats in the Cradle, Taxi, Bummer, What made America Famous, Mr. Tanner, Corey`s Coming, A Better Place To Be, Story of A Life,  W*O*L*D*, The Mayor of Candor Lied, Babysitter, Flowers are Red and Shooting Star.

A PIRATE LOOKS AT 40

This song has been chosen by Baldguitardude who was our second winner this month to choose a song for July`s FSOTM.  Another great song written by Jimmy Buffett and performed by a few other well known names, Ian McNabb, Jack Johnson, Roger Creager, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez

From Wikipedia: "A Pirate Looks at Forty" is a song written and performed by American popular music singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett. It was first released on his 1974 album A1A and "Presents to Send You" is the B-side of the single.

Buffett wrote the song about Phillip Clark, at the Chart Room where Buffett first performed after his move to Key West, Florida.[1] The song contains the bittersweet confession of a modern-day, washed-up drug smuggler as he looks back on the first 40 years of his life, expresses lament that his preferred vocation of piracy on the high seas was long gone by the time he was born, and ponders his future.

For radio play, the song was shortened by deleting the fourth verse for the single release. The song is one of Buffett's more popular, and is part of "The Big 8" that he has played at almost all of his concerts, and always during the second set.[2]

OK.  I'll get A Pirate Looks at Forty recorded once I practice it a few times.

I don't know any Chapin.  I'll have to see if something sparks my curiosity.  I was surprised that Beamer picked him!

Glad I can surprise ya!  I love Harry, my 4 favorite albums are Taxi, Heads and tails, and On the road to kingdom come, and Sequel .  My neighbor was singing Cats and Taxi with the 12 string Ovation that i now own.  She is the one who gifted it to me.   Zurf, seeing as how you finger pick really good, this should be right up your ally. (let me challenge you with the song Corey's coming)

I don't know about Mojo, but I have played and sung with BGD and it was a blast.  I can only imagine how much fun we'd have with Mojo and his pickles pitching in.

YOU BET, BUT I STILL Have 17 days LOL
Things are busy, its prime detail season and I am keeping pretty booked.  Will find some time here soon.  I was considering the epic combo of Taxi  and Sequel.   Cats has been done a lot but seems not by anyone here LOL nor has any Harry been played by anyone.  I didnt Think I would be challenging everyone so much LOLOL

So for fun, here is the UKJ version.    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B32yjbCSVpU

Re: JULY 2017 FSOTM - HARRY CHAPIN - A PIRATE LOOKS AT 40

Ok  no wonder no one else has tried any Chapin, he is not easy to play even if its easy chording.  So with Flat voice, and mistakes, here is the best I could manage out of about 10 tries. https://soundcloud.com/beamer326/taxi-attempt

Maybe someone else will get courageous

beamer ................. that was very good.  Great job on your cover and you have put so much work into it!  You said your vocals were flat but actually, that just made it your own and suited your style.  The guitar work was awesome, must have taken you ages to learn that! Awesome job!  Hope we get to hear more from you smile
