Topic: Spammers

I don't get it.

What possesses these people to spend their time writing this spam junk ?

No one reads them - they are just freaking annoying.

Does anyone really know why they do it?  Do they try to access your computer  through them ?  I have no clue ?
I looked at Chordie forum today and there was a bunch of them. Thank you to the mods that trash them !

Re: Spammers

I have noticed it too. Why they do it is because they are junk as is their spam. It seems to be increasing and I have often thought that saying it takes 5 days before you can post might help eliminate  some of it. It would also be harder on new good members too.

Re: Spammers

I usually make several visits a day to Chordie most days I am banning and removing new spam posts I don't understand it either

Re: Spammers

It's simple, some people just don't have anything better to do, so they just annoy everyone else and that is their sole purpose in life. I know what I'd like to do with them but won't say it in polite society. Sure seems like there are a lot of these dimwits. May the fleas of a thousand camels take up residence in their undergarments!

Live in the "now" - a contentment of the moment - the past is gone - the future doesn't exist - all we ever really have is now and it's always "now".

Re: Spammers

No one writes it. These are bots that are programmed to go out and spam forums using a technique called spinning that you can learn about here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Article_spinning

Long story short, bots go out and spam the crap out of tons of sites like ours with this content, pointing the content back at a target site (the websites in their profile signatures.) They do this thousands or more times in a row and hope something sticks.

The search engines are getting smarter and smarter about penalizing for forum spamming and detecting b.s. links like these, but unfortunately some folks still try it.

Many forums will hang a new poster's post in pending so that it is invisible to the world until a mod approves it. Chordie has made a decision to not do that because it's unfair to new members. So we have a bit of cleanup to do.

Hope that explains it!

Re: Spammers

I once got money making opportunities to join as many sites as possible earning big bucks for each implant. I obviously binned those posts, yes there were several and some came from Google! What some people will do to sell their garbage. They only need one out of every twenty or so sales to make money.

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

Re: Spammers

Perhaps extending the number of logins before you can post is the answer, say 10 or so would put a damper on the spamists

Re: Spammers

People do it because it works.   Old school mass mailings (which no one seems to cry about, even though the real world impact is much more severe) had about a 2% conversion rate.  That is, for every 100 offers sent, they'd get about 2 legitimate leads.  At 15 cents (anyone miss that symbol on their keyboard?  I do!)  a mailing, you can do the math to figure out how much you needed to send, and to whom, to make it worth your while.

Now take that and increase the scale by orders of magnitude, and divide the cost by thousands.   If I can get even two people to respond out of the million emails or messages my bot posted at a cost of literally pennies, I've made my money back.

Someday we'll win this thing...

I've got the UK keyboard and it hasn't even got the pence key. Got the £, $ and Euro (obviously not on my tablet) but no scrap values.
