Re: NOVEMBER 2017 FSOTM - CHALLENGE THEME

Rich,

Nice job - all of your songs are well done.
The way you played Folsom Prison was quite unique.
An array of guitars as well - liked what appeared to be the pink top guitar on your Beatles version of All my loving that was along side the others on YT

Have a great day
Jim

Re: NOVEMBER 2017 FSOTM - CHALLENGE THEME

Oh my - someone has been busy!  I am eager to listen to all of these.

I've been working on a fairly true arrangement of Smoke On The Water, which is difficult for solo acoustic guitar!  Beamer and I were joking around back channel and thought it would be fun to do a lounge singer arrangment too, but I haven't the foggiest notion how to play piano.

Beamer also sent me his initial track for Stepping Stone for me to put a bass line to it. I'm very eager to try this multi-track thing out, and Beamer is cool as he's offered to do the mixing. I just had one heck of a busy weekend. A three day weekend for me, and didn't get done half of what I needed to do. The ten minute job of replacing an outlet turned into a five hour hassle trying to figure out circuits, analyze what parts have failed, etc. And I am a terrible electrician. That's how every job went. So - apologies to Beamer. He's done his part, now it's up to me.

Saturday ran from 5AM to 11:30 PM and I got nothing of merit accomplished. Even the present I bought for my daughter was the wrong size shirt! Ugh. Nothing went right, excepting I didn't have an accident driving in some very frustrating crowded conditions as I passed through Harrisonburg, VA when James Madison University was having a football game. That was some bad timing!

Re: NOVEMBER 2017 FSOTM - CHALLENGE THEME

Neo - I just listened to your contributions done all in a row while in your jammies.  Amazing.  You have a real knack for catching the essence of a band piece and arranging it for solo acoustic. Excellent work. I'm impressed by your flexibility and creativity in arranging. Keep up the excellent work. If I had to make one constructive criticism, it would be to either get a mic closer to your mouth or to sing louder.  You sing so well, it should be more clearly featured in your recordings.

Thanks for that - I'm trying to use a simplistic recording approach, so it's one microphone plugged into the iPhone, which sits on a tripod, and I have one of those bluetooth "remote shutter" things, so I don't need to keep leaning to the phone to turn the recording on and off ... but with one mic it's sometimes hard to get the 'sweet spot' between balancing voice and guitar - however I'll bring it closer to my mouth next time smile

Re: NOVEMBER 2017 FSOTM - CHALLENGE THEME

Wow great to see all these covers going up smile

So far since I was last on here and commented, I have listened  to 3 of your songs neophytte ........and will continue to listen to the rest this evening when I get a little bit more time.
So neophytte,  so far I have listened to Elivira, Folsom Prison and Proud Mary.  Good covers and well played.  You play the guitar well and the use of the fret board on some of the songs very well smile   Elivira was a bit different to how iIusually have heard this song but the beauty of doing covers here is that we can make them to sound however we want, so good for you.  Folsom Prison version also a little bit different too but both of these songs you made them your own.  Have to agree with what zurf said about the vocals, they could do with being louder or the mic up closer so as not to be out done by the guitar playing.
Proud Mary was the best one I thought because you seemed more confident and it seems like you know it well, so your vocals and guitar style on this cover were good, very enjoyable on this one smile

Thanks for your kind comments - I hadn't heard of Elvira or Folsom Blues before, which is why they are probably more my take on it than close to the original ... smile

I do remember learning Proud Mary from my school days, and it must have sunk in but I've never played it on guitar before ...

Thanks for the comments on the mic - I'll try better next time ...

Cheers

Ok ... just got done listening to all of your covers neophytte ............. and I have to say, well done for attempting so many of the songs this month!  I think you are the first one to have a go at so many, so wow and well done to you!
Smoke on the Water ... great guitar work in  there.
Stepping Stone .......some very clever guitar work particularly toward the end of it!
Sylvia`s Mother ... very recognisable, well done
and finally  Leaving on a Jet Plane .  You have done really well to cover all these songs, impressive to say the least.

Ok, here is a very quick attempt I did this afternoon of ~ Elvira~ .  I tend to get a bit too fast in parts (but then I have a bad tendancy to do that at the best of times).

Neo the broad range of styles you cover is impressive. Jandle you and your ukulele working well together. Zurf your guitar sounding niice and your laid back vocals real smooth. I will attach a cover of a Rod Stewart song done by a young  seventeen year old that  a friend sent me, which to me  captures the spirit or essence of what  good entertainment is about. Good cheeky fun from a confident kid.

Here is another very quick attempt as one of this months FSOTM ~Folsom Prision~.  Bit of lag with me blowing the whistle lol as I was trying to perform this on my own (hard to get to the whistle on time). Think my banjo ukulele could do with some new strings too! smile

easybeat, I haven`t forgotten your challenge song to me, will get onto it, I will have to sit and learn that one though as I don`t know it that well smile
easybeat, reckon as you did your first challenge so quickly it is time for another challenge for you too..... so I challenge you to ~Gloria~  smile

Jandle you  capture the feel of someone inside Folsom Prison while that train goes by and the driver blows the trains whistle. Nice singing and playing.
