Topic: LEGAL ACTION AGAINST GUITAR TAB UNIVERSE

Guitar Tab Universe found at www.guitartabs.cc has legal action pending that has been issued by the National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) as well as the Music Publishers' Association (MPA) on the basis that sharing tablature constitutes copyright infringement. They have a blog on their homepage which makes interesting reading and may one day be applicable to Chordie. Lets hope not

Re: LEGAL ACTION AGAINST GUITAR TAB UNIVERSE

very interesting!!

Lets hope they dont get away with closing any chord/tab site down, if so I will throw away my computer.

I would think if it was actual music that sites were sharing then yeah, infringment would be there but not for tabs/and especially not chords.

and chordie is a search engine that gets the songs from other sites, so I tihnk this would mean songs would disapear from chordie???

is that right? I dunno

not happy

Ken

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: LEGAL ACTION AGAINST GUITAR TAB UNIVERSE

actually almost all tab sites are just search engines and some host files from others computers

Re: LEGAL ACTION AGAINST GUITAR TAB UNIVERSE

Very few guitar sites (if any) are built like Chordie. Chordie is basically built like Google, the songs are hosted somewhere else, and when you click on it, it is downloaded from the remote site and formatted.

There are some caching involved, and if two users clicks the same song, it will not be downloaded twice. The reason for this is not to create too much load on the hosting site. BUT...the songs from guitartabs will disappear from chordie very soon.

Technically it would be much easier to host songs locally, but that would also make it a lot more vulnerable to legal actions like the one that guitartabs are facing now.

If you want to try and help put an end to the MPA's assault on internet tab sites. Everyone will have to step up and fight it.

Re: LEGAL ACTION AGAINST GUITAR TAB UNIVERSE

To take away MPA's last argument, I have added non-profit links to all artists songs. This should more than compensate for what the artists are loosing for lost sales of tablature books.

Links should start to appear on all songs.

The reason for doing this is posted here:

Re: LEGAL ACTION AGAINST GUITAR TAB UNIVERSE

Good idea, anything that aids the effort to keep these sites open has to be worth backing.

I'm still a newcomer to the guitar world, but even at this early stage in my learning I can see that Chordie is a great aid when it comes to finding tabs for songs I like,as well as picking up tips etc.

I'll be using the link to purchase songs from time to time. And I'll be adding my name to any online pettition there is. <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_smile.gif" border=0 alt="Smile">

Re: LEGAL ACTION AGAINST GUITAR TAB UNIVERSE

Personally, I think this situation shows that the music industry's primary concern is the money they make, not the music they promote.  If they really cared about music, doesn't it make sense that they would want to provide an easy way for people to learn songs, such as tabs? To me, the logical course of action would be to try to negotiate with the sites that host tabs.  However, in most cases, it seems that the website in question was simply threatened with a lawsuit, without prior warning. I think the music industry sees these sites as easy targets for lawsuits. Notice that, while the music industry says they are defending the rights of artists and songwriters, I have yet to see a complaint from a songwriter. Having songs featured online is really free publicity.
