Topic: New Hobby

I decided to get a sewing machine today and make a guitar strap for my new Epiphone electric acoustic it took some time and a few snarls till I found out I was loading the thread in the wrong direction for the top and bottom bobbin so that is when I put in the included DVD and learned how to do it the right way. My project turned out just fine and I am going to make some more all in all a great way to spend a rainy day.

Looks good, I always invest in some of the Schaller type strap locks:

Re: New Hobby

So first we had JJJ with his famous Bread Machine (R.I.P.), and now The Alien Moderator has a sewing machine? lol Seriously though, it sounds like it could be a fun hobby, and a sewing machine won't wake the neighbors at night. Pics please!

I thought of that (selling) I think the cost of shipping (post office) would be very economical due to the weight and shipping container I would need the length of the persons normal strap so I could make them for each person then calculate the material costs as each one will be special, my own is 54" with no adjustments I also could add a padded feature for additional comfort that is movable. My main concern is to protect the instrument so I would include a washer(rubber) to place between the screw and the strap so the strap cannot slip off the guitar. if anyone is interested send me an email.

Re: New Hobby

is your sewing machine able to sew leather ?

Re: New Hobby

Yes it just requires another needle and a slower speed I have all the needles I need to sew just about anything, the straps I made have a leather type end on them and I had no problems.

Re: New Hobby

The sewing machine brings back memories. My mother taught me to run a sewing machine when I was a teenager, she was tired of sewing ripped pants. That knowlege led to auto upholstry and classic auto restoration, Packards, Cords and Rolls Royces to name a few.  I still enjoy a little time at the sewing machine once in a while. Have fun with your new machine Russell.

I didn`t think the bread machine was still relevant

Re: New Hobby

Strangest guitar strap I've ever seen was made from the girth of a western saddle. This particular strap was made from rope and must have been "customized" somehow or it  would have been too wide over the guitarist's shoulder.

Russell, will the machine allow you to work with leather and would you want to?

Thanks

Our parents can show us quite a few things if we take the time to pay attention,  some very useful life skills you learned  that you applied to
a related field I find it very soothing and fun.

Re: New Hobby

A rope lol that reminds me of the Beverly Hillbillies and Jethro who used a  rope for a belt. My machine has many sewing functions including reinforced stitching for leather it also makes buttonholes and sews the button not to mention it has over 12 different stitch patterns and the attachments Leather is a little harder but slow and easy gets the job done smile
