Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

I gave it another listen through, Bill, and she does tweak the notes here and there ... adds a nice bit of tension in some places. Our pal David Gilmour rarely plays a note without bending it somehow, but I don't know if it's a technique with a formal name. Hopefully CG will share his expertise and help us "hobbyists" out.

Billy Roberts / Jimi Hendrix    "Hey Joe"    (performed by the Joscho Stephan Trio)

I guess Billy Roberts owns the copyright, but most of us know the Hendrix version. I think he would have loved this version!

TF

That, in my opinion was your best find yet!

That was incredible. I loved the velocity of his play  and at about the 3:55 mark his working of the strings made that guitar talk !

Friday night I went to a Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams concert at Bethel Woods ( site of the original Woodstock)  and Steve Earle covered Hey Joe, he played it very well and with great passion which sounded great, but the guitar work on this piece was a stratosphere above it.

It is unimaginable the practice hours that it takes to play like that.  LeBron James gets gazillions of dollars because he is a " special talent" in basketball, Joscho Stephan is just as unique in my opinion - a very special talent.

Thanks for sharing this TF

Jim

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Cheers, Jim ... thank for the comments. Joscho's skill level is right at the top with the best, and that cat on the bass is amazing.

A Steve Earle concert would've been a real treat ... sounds like you had a blast!

Here's another new vid from Luca ... great song, and I love his creative use of the eBow for the high drone notes.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Wow
Very talented.

There is way too much going on for me to even imagine playing like that. I have enough trouble getting one hand to stay on beat using one guitar neck.  That was mesmerizing!
Such flexibility in the hands as well  - I.ve got no shot at ever attaining that ! smile
Great song.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

How does one learn to play like that?  Three necks, two hands - I have trouble using a fork at supper time.

Live in the "now" - a contentment of the moment - the past is gone - the future doesn't exist - all we ever really have is now and it's always "now".

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Thanks, TIG and BJ ... the ability he exhibits is one thing; the imagination to come up with what he does is a whole other level of brilliant. Can you imagine walking into a world-renowned luthier (like Serracini who made this one for Luca) and saying:

I'd like to order a custom made acoustic guitar. It needs a regular 6-string neck, plus a multi-scale 7-string neck, plus a 3-stringed bass neck, angled upwards at about 30-degrees so I can play it with the edge of my palm. Can you tell me how much, and when it will be ready, please?"

He had to visualize this gizmo - and how he would be playing it - before it even existed. He didn't just walk into Guitar Center and say: "Could you show me where your 3-necked acoustic guitars are, please?"

Eva Atmatzidou    "Orchestra Flying in a Baby's Dream"    (original composition)

This one has an eerie feel to it ... she creates a very surreal feel with the composition, use of the eBow, and the restrained tempo.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

I really enjoyed this one. Looked as though she had some classical training and she was great.  Very restrained how she played and you hit it right she sounded  eerie.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

Thank-you, CG ... I'm very glad you enjoyed it. When you mentioned that you saw evidence of classical guitar training, I decided to see how much. Here's the bio of her studies, which is very impressive. What I especially enjoy & appreciate about her playing is that she's unafraid to step outside of tradition in places in order to be creative.

Re: Tuesday's Flying Fingers

if you look closely at her strum hand she's got some mechanism between her hand and the strings-   must be how she makes the eerie sound. Great music - I just put that on my list of stuff I'll never be able to do ! smile

Hey TIG ... that doo-hickey is called an "eBow", and it sets up an infinite sustaining vibration in the string it's touching. Eva's one of the few I've seen who will play different notes while holding it. Here's a bit of info about it and how it works, in case you're dying to blow some $$ on a new gadget someday:

way above me.  I have trouble just playing an f chord  :0

Cool info though.

I just read her biography and it is impressive to say the least. She does have an extensive knowledge of classical guitar and her biography is worth anyone's to read it.

Very creative use of a lap steel, using some finger-style techniques to play these evocative themes. And a gorgeous instrument, too ... by the way.

Very cool - loved that performance.
