Topic: NMD I just couldn't resist

Hey all, sorry to be such a stranger for so long.
Lucy's "chemo trail" just seems to take everything there is.
I thought this was a great opportunity to say hi and share some good news... a new Mandolin!
Apparently this was leftover inventory from a guitar shop in Vancouver back in the day.  It's been around the block a couple times but still very pretty.  Now if I could only play the darned thing.

Gorgeous instrument. That's a real piece of art.     Also, I friend requested you.

Re: NMD I just couldn't resist

Cool, I can't quite tell from the photos - is it a european round-back, or american flat back?

Cheers

Not really either (?) - I haven't been able to find a picture of any other quite like it.

Re: NMD I just couldn't resist

Congrats on your new mando, Mr. Green!

I love the bowl back with the maple & walnut alternating, making it as much a work of art as it an instrument. And it looks to be quite deep ... must sound fantastic. I tried playing a mandolin a few times, and just couldn't cram my thick fingers onto the narrow fret board without muting half the strings. Here's cut of vintage Framus mandos ... on the color page, that looks like yours on the left:

Again, congrats on a beautiful new instrument.

Re: NMD I just couldn't resist

Sorry Richard, it's set to public on my Facebook post.
Don't know what else I can do.  I tried to imbed it here but couldn't figure that out.

Maybe someone more tech savvy will come to our rescue lol

TF you are right, that skinny fretboard is a bit of a challenge!  Oh well, I'll pick away at it some and see if I can get anywhere with it..

Re: NMD I just couldn't resist

That is one sweet looking instrument - even if I couldn't play it - I would display that somewhere in my house - very cool !

Enjoy it !

Re: NMD I just couldn't resist

Thanks TIG et al,  it really is a beaut.
I think I've found a home for it in my "old stuff" corner by Dad's rolltop desk and a garbage sale cuckoo clock.  I'll post a pic when I get a hanger installed.
Interesting that back in '64 even, intonation hadn't hit the radar (?).  The stain where the bridge was set originally coincides with the catalogue pic Mr Funster shared.  At that angle, it would be in tune at the first position only (at best)  Angled as it is now, the intonation is pretty good all along the neck
Cheers!

Well, that was odd - I tried it from my phone and it worked, but still couldn't see it from my laptop. Anyway, it's a nice looking Mando - my Dad has a couple of round backs stashed away from when he was in Europe (from before I was born, I believe) - he used to pull them out at Christmas and play the only two tunes he knows ('We three Kings' and 'Good King Wenceslas'), but he hasn't done it for a while.

Cheers

Re: NMD I just couldn't resist

Great comment about the re-positioning of the bridge ... didn't notice that at first. As you say, intonation wasn't something that was talked about a lot at one time. Too bad there's some discoloration from where / when the bridge was slanted, but ... that's still a gorgeous instrument. I hope you have many happy hours playing it!

Re: NMD I just couldn't resist

One of my favourite shops here in  Wellington is Alistair's Music. all sorts of musicians pop in just to play music and just have a chat Here is Alistair and his friend Sarah  playing a beautiful looking Mandoline similar to yours in his shop. He also restores all sorts of string instruments such as the Russian Style Mandolin he is playing which had been repaired back to life.
