Re: AUGUST 2022 FSOTM – TOMORROW, FLOWERS, WITHOUT, WHISKEY

Back from holiday and back to reality, catching up around home and jobs that seem to never end.

neophytte, had a listen to both your recording and Phills.  It`s hard to compare them because you both have different styles, vocally and instrumently.  I enjoyed them both, it was good to hear the different styles too.  I did notice your version had quite a bit of reverb on which also added to a different effect on it.  Nice to see an original being performed as well.

TIGLJK, loved how you put all 4 words from this month into your very cleverly written original song, you have such a talent for song writing.  I had a listen and it was great to hear you performing your song and how you hear it being played.

Re: AUGUST 2022 FSOTM – TOMORROW, FLOWERS, WITHOUT, WHISKEY

Sorry I haven't got anything up yet. Here's submission one. I wish I had time to record it properly instead of a quicky on my phone.

This is "Walking Cane," a (I think) public domain song I first heard by Robert Earl Keen. Proper recording would have permitted me to get rid of the screeches and put some God Mode into my voice.

Anyway. Here you go.

How cool is that?

I had thought about playing it, but didn't want to do the same song as you (for reasons of modesty and avoidance of personal embarrassment).

Very fun!

I liked them both, but Richard I think the thing that pulled yours down a bit was the reverb. It was a bit much on a soft mic. I loved it, but if I had to give a critique it would be to pull back on the reverb. Phil's version was much more straightforward, which was nice.

Re: AUGUST 2022 FSOTM – TOMORROW, FLOWERS, WITHOUT, WHISKEY

zurf, I enjoyed listening and watching both of those and I always enjoy your chat before hand. I actually don't know either of those songs so I cant compare  them to the originals but they sounded fine by me and I think you covered them both well and with enthusiasm.   I was listening to the sound of your vocals, I reckon your voice would also suit some Neil Young songs, just at certain points I could hear your vocals sounded a bit like his vocals.

Anyway here is my very late entry and done very quickly as its the last day of the month for this months entries.  I was hoping to do another 2 songs that I had lined up but time has run out for me as we were away on holiday and I just haven't had time to get anything more done for this.  So here it is, rushed as it is.

I love your song choice on that one Jan you did a good rendition. It got me reminiscing about the coffee bars here in Wellington when I was in my teens. Many of these places would at night have folk singers singing and the patrons would singalong with them and that was one of the songs I would hear.

Sounds   good  Jan your  voice  is  so  clear

Jan - Girl with the golden voice ! She should have been in a recording studio years ago IMHO !

Just leaves it to imagination what she would sound like with a band rather than her Uke (which is very good! )

Thanks so much Peatle, Grah1, easybeat and TIGLJK for the AWESOME feedback, made my day today actually and put a smile on my face from all the lovely comments and feedback.   I was doing housework, blah,  and it lifted my spirit up as I did my jobs around the house.

I thought that was great - that really suits your voice and your uke technique ...

Sorry I'm really late, I got a cold halfway through the month, and was going to do this at a gig, but had to cancel the gig, so now I'm mostly better, this is "Vincent" by Don McLean: https://youtu.be/jOZlvGMGfyU

What'd I ever do to you?  LOL!

I thought your Dylan cover was great. I haven't heard that song in decades, and it is a poignant and beautiful song. I enjoyed your rendition far beyond Dylan's.

neophytte, thanks for the great feedback on my cover smile
I really liked your cover of Vincent, you performed it really well, especially if you have just gotten over a cold.  You managed the high notes and just the right amount of reverb on this one.  Great to hear you chatting a little bit before hand as well.  Big Thumbs up from me.

zurf, lol sorry if your not a fan of Neil Youngs music big_smile  Just what I could hear in parts of your vocals on one of your songs.  I like some of the old Neil Young songs, so didn't mean to insult you big_smile
Thanks for the neat feedback on my cover too smile

This my entry for August is called When Flowers Bloom. It is winter here and my garden has taken a bit of hiding  mostly due to strong cold winds though there are some flowers in my garden that the petals haven't been destroyed. .  . It was a bit hard going on my fingers but I managed to squeeze out a tune on the guitar for this one in a style I don't normally play but my Maree likes to listen to. It was just recorded on my cell phone no fancy mikes or anything. I tried to write some simple but easy to remember lyrics.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-qTfk4v_4o

I like the laid back, swing feel of this song ...

Always hard to get a good balance between voice and banjo (or banjitar), and even though I was listening on headphones, was hard to make out the lyrics ... but what I could make ou sounded like a fun little song!!

I appreciate you setting your phone back a bit ... smile Personally I think it's better when you can see the guitar as well as hear it - I always look at the guys who do videos 'professionally', and they always sit or stand with their waist upwards visible; so those young-un's still got something to teach us smile

The song was quite good and suited you vocally, I don't think it was 'all wrong', it wasn't perfect, but making mistakes is better than faking perfection ...
