Topic: Bushfire

I haven't been on for a few days as a bush fire was raging just on the other side of Joondalup lake:

We were just outside the yellow zone, but a few muso friends live in the Wanneroo area ...

Wow. They say Welsh place names are wierd. Stay safe.

Ask not what Chordie can do for you, but what you can do for Chordie.

A lot of the names in Australia are based on the traditional land owners. This page says The name ‘Wanneroo’ comes from the word ‘Wanna’, meaning digging stick used by Aboriginal women and ‘Roo’ meaning ‘the place of ’.

Joondalup was based on a Noongar (aboriginal) word is Doondalup and it means ‘the lake that glistens’.

Looks like we even got a Wiki page about the fires:

Re: Bushfire

Richard, I guess living in a country that is periodically scorched by catastrophic bushfires becomes a consideration when looking at a location or suburb to settle in when buying a house.? I hope that you and your family are keeping safe.

Hi Peatle,

Normally that is a consideration if you're buying in the country, it's pretty rare that we get fire up this way - the last one I remember was probably in the same area 20 years ago, but it wasn't so populated then. A few new suburbs have popped up. It also wasn't as big as this one, fanned by hot temperatures and big winds. The fire was contained on Saturday, and I think it was out on Sunday - and since then the rain has come in, which wets the ground and stops any other fires.

Cheers

Re: Bushfire

Richard, so glad to hear that and you are safe. Strum on

Re: Bushfire

Richard,

those fires are amazingly destructive and difficult to contain.

I am so glad you and your family are safe.

Neo
a friend of mine worked in Aussie on a bulldozer making fire breaks
the greens in their wisdom changed the fire break policy, that ended
his contract.so less fire breaks, more and bigger fires.
go figure?

Re: Bushfire

Thanks everyone, we were still quite safe (about 10km away, with a big lake between us), but was sad to hear one of the ladies at the music club was evacuated and had her backyard razed - her house was safe, so that's a positive.
