Topic: Homogenized Music

Hello Chordie, am I asking too much by wanting some imperfection? I have been thinking recently if only I could write a song that came to me like rain into a drought. Lyrically written with a crooked phrase that only a cracked throat could deliver. Not perfect with a raw edge sung by a voice that has wept and forgotten why. At this present moment I don't want to hear a song from a writer whose musical garden is without a single weed, What I am looking for is the weed, the thorn, the bitten fruit, the finger bleeding on the rose. Maybe when performed live or in a recording there is a pause where the singer has forgotten the words and made them new. Maybe I'm weird and the only one with this point of view??????

No you're not alone Pedr! Although I think we are all striving for perfection technology is the forbidden fruit we find it almost impossible to deny. Personally I can ignore it as I still love bashing away at the strings or drums, not perfection but like a piece of chocolate or a pint on a hot day it quells my thirst, the "I did that syndrome,"  I bet Freud never thought of that?

Pete,
I believe you are correct - it is what makes songs unique for sure,  It's why live bands are so cool !
However, recording artists strive for perfection in studio. It's why studio instrumentalists are paid so well.
Once I heard a studio taping by Elvis Presley - they were on the 43rd attempt of the day .
In today's world, they don't even have to be in the same room, same studio, same time of day, or even the same country to use technology to achieve what they deem "perfection".
I totally get what you are saying. It's like eating a great meal, but after you have for 4 0r 5 days in a row- you really would like something else for a change !

Jim, you are right, but don't be fooled by that "live in the studio" thing. look at the credits on the sleeve notes there are usually 10 or more writers and sound bights from other songs. Check out some of the producers on YouTube, they can be quite vocal about modern music and how writers like yourself are getting screwed by the on-line download confederation. I wish your song all the success it deserves, it's a great song and I mean that.

Good one guys for me the beauty of live music lies in its unpredictability. Hearing those rough edges while keeping some structure for me makes it an enjoyable experience as long it doesn't go too far of the tracks. Also what was the appeal for me of hearing someone like Joe Cocker for instance performing a song reinterpreted in a way that he could make a  song sound fresh. Another thing that makes a live show great is a song where the audience can join in.  Also, I like it when there is a bit of entertaining banter between songs or as in Arlo Guthrie style of a bit of clever story telling during and after a song. Thank you for responding to my post with your good input.

but of course ive one them on purpose(yeah right)

I love live music, live bands, live vocalists the most.  The raw sound of it being performed live, you can't beat it.  Recently on our holiday in the South Island, we went to a local pub for dinner and there was a live band.  A female drummer, she was brilliant.  She fascinated me watching her drumming away, her expressions on her face as she was totally absorbed in what she was doing, brilliant.  Another female singer, with strong vocals, she could sing anything.  The base guitarist and the other guitarist, both could sing as well, just watching them all getting into it was great.  The between song, joking around and banter between them was great.  They had some of the patrons up dancing and singing along.  As I said, you can`t beat the atmosphere of a live band.
