Re: I NEED HELP!!!

Ah I see you play guitar hero, well friend, prepare to completely ignore and forget anything you might have assumed you'd learned from the game (although it's pretty fun I'll admit)...
Learn some chords and basic scales (look under resources link, or under the category songs under miscalaneous)....
Get yourself some kind of chord chart, read some of the earlier posts about reading tablature and look at the public books under 'easy'... and don't give up! Learning takes lots of time. Do you know anybody who plays???

Re: I NEED HELP!!!

Stop trying to play songs for right now.  Work on making your hands strong, and your fingers nimble and articulate.  That means learn some chords, and play some scales, and do it again and again and again.

Practice every day.

And then practice.

Someday we'll win this thing...

.....and get rid of that guitar hero CRUD. It's counterproductive and it does nothing for you in terms of learning how to play a REAL guitar........

Give everything but up.

Re: I NEED HELP!!!

Time to widen your net GK, we'd all like to play a fast rocker first off but it takes alot of work to get to the level I hear in Wolfmother.

First off you need to get the open chords E A D then G C F nailed. This will open up a whole load of songs to you but don't restrict yourself to just hard rock. Once you've worked out how to play B chords (see loads of posts here) then you are barre chord territory which is the basis for alot of the up and down the neck work I saw Wolfmother doing. Leave soloing and quick riffs like the one that's all over 'Woman' to later, speed exercises can make grown men cry.

All the heavy groups started off playing simple songs like 'Knocking On Heavens Door' and 'Brown Eyed Girl'. All rock guitar gods started with slow blues improvisations. They just kept at until they got good and fast.

Re: I NEED HELP!!!

That was good advice in just taking your time, practicing chords and scales. Try not to expect too much too fast. I don't know what type of music you like but when you do begin playing look for some simple 2 and 3 chord songs. There are tons of these songs out there and they are easy. As an example you can play Achy Breaky Heart by Billy Ray Cryus with 2 chords - "A" and "D7".  Once you have learned this song you can change the chords to "E" and "B7" keep the same beat and strum pattern and you are now playing Tulsa Time by Don Williams. The strum pattern is"

Down --Down - Up- Down - Up - Down - Up. (1 - 2 - & - 3 - & - 4 - &)

Re: I NEED HELP!!!

I think you should first learn to  make barre chords (cause then you can make ANY chord by moving you hand up or down the neck or by liftin or adding a finger), learn a few movable scales (your hands are already in position when you make your barre chord) and learn your open chords which sound soooooo sweet on a 12 string.
That sounds like a lot but heres a good method:
1)Start with power chords useing the E, A and D strings. If it feels like a strain or an awkward stretch thats because it is. Don't worry, it will be second nature fairly soon.
2)While you are mastering that, start working on the minor scale it is easy and very versitile
3)As you are learning those 2 things, pick an open chord to learn. Practice making it until you can play it clear and clean with no buzz or muffled sounds (assuming the condition of you guitar doesn't cause those sounds.) Practice going from power chords to your open chord quickly and smoothly. As you learn each chord add another and another.
4)Once you have mastered step 1, make the same power chords on the A, D and G strings.
5)By now you should have your minor scale down pretty good. If not, it's ok keep working at it. Now you can add the major scale, also very simple and very versitile.
6)By this time you probably have some hand streangth, mobility, dexterity. You will need all theese thing because now we move to barre chords. Remember your power chords? geuss what? thats half of a barre chord. Just barre that finger accross all the strings (if you aren't allready) and add or lift your middle finger or pinky. Take your time and do it clean and smooth.
7)get in a band and show off your mad guitar skills! Don't forget to pick up little things from others on the way.
