Topic: First few gigs, covers or originals?

my friend has a band and they just booked their first gig. they're trying to decide whether to do covers or originals, they have plenty of original songs written. do you think it would be better for them to stick to some old favorites since no one knows who they are? or jump right in to performing originals?

Re: First few gigs, covers or originals?

I think it'd be good idea to go for both, maybe open with some recognizable songs to warm the crowd, then throw one or two of thier own out there. While its a good idea to show off your playing skills on standards, eventually they're gonna need something to set them apart from everybody else, so they need to present original stuff too.
Good luck with everything,

yep, i agree with rebel,
start with a few well known songs to make the crowd jump, or atleast tap their feet, chuck in a few of their own songs then finish with one or two covers again.
