Topic: clueless newbie

hi to all!

i am very eager to learn how to play the guitar but i am completely lost! I have no idea where to start.

According to my pop, I should concentrate on playing a simple song first rather than memorizing all the chords before actually playing a song..

what are the correct steps for me to learn anyway?

should I follow my dad's advice and pick a 3-chord song then choose more difficult ones as I improve? or memorize a-f chords and practice switching cords first?

any help and suggestions will be really appreciated

Re: clueless newbie

Listen to your father. ALWAYS listen to your father. There are about eight basic cords. Certain cords alway go together to form a pattern in a song. Example: G, C, & D. Learn these cords and strum them this way... (for each / strum downward) G//// C//// G//// D//// and there you go you making music.

Start with the basics

Re: clueless newbie

Hello calel (clueless newbie) - another thing to consider is that it is best to learn to sing a song as you are learning to play the song. Ideally, as you are learning to work your fingers and hands you should also be learning to work your voice & lungs.

Playing & singing each take practice - have fun with it and be bold. If it sounds lousy now, just keep at it and it you will improve rapidly as you keep trying. Go at it with great gusto and you will find that learning something as complex as playing and singing is very rewarding.

Pick some simple songs to start with and as you master these move on to more difficult songs. Learning chords just for the sake of learning chords is not much fun. Pick songs that you like that use chords that you need to learn.

Also, learn about Music - strive to learn about the basics of Music Theory, chord structure, and other technical aspects of making Music. You need not become an expert in all the details, but it is very useful to understand the basics.

Re: clueless newbie

Yep, Listen to DAD! Become proficient at ONE thing at a time. Take UR time. Patientce is a virtue.

Something you may want to consider is squeezing a tennis ball, or some other object in the hand you make chords with to strengthen muscles. When it comes time to make theose "bar chords", you'll be using muscles in your hands & fingers seldom (if ever) used for any other porpose.

Re: clueless newbie

Start with a-f because if you learn them you can play almost any song. l8er

Get yourself down the local library. They usually have a load of beginers tuition books that are really useful. HONEST!

Is anything really made up of zeros and ones??

Re: clueless newbie

a great song to learn is for beginners is "Brown Eyed Girl" the chords are easy (G,C,D) and everyone knows it. it is the first song I learned.

Re: clueless newbie

Although the F chord is important to learn, it is not used as much as G,C,D,E, or A. However, the F chord is also a more difficult one to master. It is the only major chord (that I know of) that requires two strings to be held by one finger. Of course, practice makes perfect!

I'm a newbie too. Just got my guitar friday. But I too have a question. I have been looking through the songs and the chords. I looked at the different chord veriations and I see some of them have a number next to the fret. Just wondering what that number means.

Re: clueless newbie

hi lisa

welcome to the site.

the number you ask about is the fret. i.e when you see the chord chart and it shows where to put your fingers and it has a number, this is where you start the chord from.

So if you see a chord that looks like the same pattern as an F but it has the number 2 next to it then it will be Bm. ( or thereabouts)

hmm, hope that makes sense ( it is first thing in the morning, just out of bed, hardly any sleep and can still taste the whisky)

Re: clueless newbie

Lisa,

Good to hear you're having fun learning! I can honestly say that playing an instrument is a life-long thing. And, the more you play, the better you'll be. I'm sure you'll become an expert in no time. Take it slow and have fun!
