Topic: i am learnin how to play and need some advice

i am haveing troubles with switching chords i mean i am getting better how long should i play every day? i am also have troubles with strumming patterns i am also having troubles with not being able to switch chords without looking at my hands i have only played about 3 times and about 3 hours each time and can play c,g,f,em,a,am,d

Re: i am learnin how to play and need some advice

thats quite good for 9 hours playing to know those chords.

I would say though, dont try too much at one time, learning takes time.

No need for three hours a day, but if you have the time then use it learning to change chords.

Changing chords without looking will take quite a bit longer than learning the chord changes ( or it did with me) after a while of playing your fingers get trained to go where the chords are. But there is nothing wrong with looking to see what you are playing.

Srtumming patterns, hmmm, well I dont bother too much about them, I just play the way I like to and always seems ok. My problem is when it is suppose to be just downward strums through a song, I will strum up and down or down down up or down down down down up down up etc, whatever feels good in my head.

It is going to take you longer than 3 sessions playing 3 hours per session to play the guitar.

good luck,

Ken

ye get some that are cut out for the job and others just get by from pretending

Re: i am learnin how to play and need some advice

hey im very new to the game aswell and i know what you mean its all a bit overwhelming. advice i was given is just focuss on one thing at a time. ive been on chord changes for a while now and am staring to get better but i have one strumming pattern( down/down/up/down) stuck in my head and i know once ive mastered chord changes im going to have to work on getting that shifted and learning new patterns but im not going to even think about that yet until ive mastered these chord changes. im assusred that it will all come together in the end but i think patience is vital

all you need in life are shoes and a guitar

Re: i am learnin how to play and need some advice

Be patient with youself.  There are some great resourses on the net for beginners.  You should be concentrating on the basics, and make sure you are using the correct hand position, and note placement.  Be sure that you are playing all the proper strings and hitting the chords clear.  It is better to play 3 chords well and hit your transitions than get over your head and play 6 chords that sound like crud...  Most of all, make it fun... there are a boat load of 3 chord songs out there... get a couple you like to play - Select songs with seperate 3 chord progressions, play the chords, and strum with the cd or the way it sounds in your head...  Advanced strumming and fingering patterns will come later...  Learn the individual notes in the first position and memorize them forwards and backwards.  EFGABCDEFGABCDEFG... know the basics, the sharps and flats will come... If you know the notes of the chords you are playing, it will help out tremendously as you progress...

Good luck

Practice an hour a day, every day.  In six months you'll be amazed at what you're doing.

Someday we'll win this thing...

There are many good guitars for sale on Ebay!  You may need to go to a place like Guitar Center and play a few first.  Then, find the model you like best on Ebay.  I bouught three guitars from there and have not been disappointed.

Re: i am learnin how to play and need some advice

I find that playing for say half an hour then coming back later in the day, maybe to do some scales or progressions. Then again a little later to jam a bit works for me. I try and play eveyday but sometimes when I am stuck I will not play for a day or 2 then things seems easier for some reason!

I was working on the Unplugged Sessions of Eric Clapton and just could not get it right (Hey Hey) so I left it for a while, played soemthing different (Cavatina) then came back to it a few days later and bingo, within half an hour I was well into it.

I suppose what I am saying is playing the guitar is like anything else. It takes time and we each learn our own way. So don't worry about it too much, just enjoy what you're doing and it will come. Adios <img src="images/smiley_icons/icon_razz.gif" border=0 alt="Razz">

Re: i am learnin how to play and need some advice

Chords tend to group together so try these;

G C D - Hang On Sloopy, Louie Louie, Our Town

E A D - Johnny Be Goode, Cherry Cherry

C F G - Sloop John B, Do You Wanna Dance

G Em C D - Blue Moon, All I Do Is Dream, Only Sixteen

Re: i am learnin how to play and need some advice

just keep playing eventually it will all fall together and you will wonder why you thought it was so hard.
